Journal Captain Splendid's Journal: Nostalgia 15

Welp, looks like the Benghazi/Emailgate scandal is done with, seeing as all the right wing noise machines have shifted over to their new tactic to derail the Clinton campaign.

Can you guess what they think will do the trick this time?

That's right kids, it's Bill Clinton's sex life!

Apparently, his peccadilloes, insufficient to stop him being elected in '92 and re-elected in '96, not to mention boring enough to not warrant impeachment in '98, are the new secret weapon that's going to wipe Hillary off the face of the earth. One of the arguments brought up on Hannity's radio show yesterday, and I shit you not, was that we hadn't had a solid discussion of Billo's improprieties in a good long while, so it would be nice and fresh to exhume, particularly for millennials.

I mean, I can kinda see the logic here. Feminism (and the public perception thereof), has come a ways since those flannel and coffee days of yore, so why not see if we can round up a new jury, re-litigate, and get a different result?

Now, quite apart from the fact that Hillary is not Bill, there are at least three serious flaws with this plan: Number one, you have a lot of room for unforced errors. If you fuck up even slightly (or hell, if her campaign is the least bit competent), she can ju-jitsu this shit in a heartbeat to her benefit.

Second, the voters who are actually the target of this strategy, independents and women, aren't going to overwhelmingly switch away from her in disgust because they were previously unaware that her husband's a bit of a creep.

Lastly, the very specific people you're trying to agitate with this are the people you happily and routinely make fun of: College kids, feminists, SJWs, and most of Tumblr. I'm not going to claim that any of these groups are super-smart, but they're smart enough to see through that kind of concern trolling.

  • With Hillary and The Donald as front runners, the trend in my lifetime of every president being less honest and worse for the country than the previous one will continue.

    • That's a hell of a thing to say, considering at the very least the speedbump that is Tricky Dick.
      • Who was President when I was born. Followed by Ford, who pardoned Tricky Dick. Followed by Carter, who sent a rescue military operation into a sandstorm. Followed by Reagan who was an old man often asleep at the post, not to mention the Altzheimers. And all of them, including Tricky Dick, were veritable statesmen of much honor in comparison to the mental midgets who have follwed them.

Sadly, I don't think Obama is the bottom of the pile, yet.

        • You might want to learn a little more than that about Nixon. Don't get me wrong, the tag team wrestling partnership formerly known as George Bush and Dick Cheney made a nice run at things, but it's still not close.

If you had been an adult when Nixon was President you'd know just how bad he was. However, he did accomplish some good along with his bad. Today's Republicans would call him a communist.

What alternate reality are you from? Clinton was FAR better than the Bush that came before him. Turned the Republican deficit into a budget surplus, took office in a recession and left in a boom. Alquaida bombed the WTC and the bombers are in prison. Crime went way down.

Yes, Bush II (Shrub) was worse than Clinton and may have been the worst President in history. He took office durin

      • "Clinton was FAR better than the Bush that came before him." - Bush I took us to Kuwait. Clinton gave us a sperm stained dress. No contest.

Shrub was certainly worse than Clinton, but at least he didn't give us the UnAfordible Care Act. Both Shrub and Obama are crony capitalists, but Obama's cronies are Planned Parenthood, Insurance Company Executives, Finanical Industry Bank Presidents, and of course, the gays of Man's Country and the DLC.

    • Camelot died with the Kennedys. The decline that you perceive quite correctly has been following kind of a *Moore's Law* curve, changing only in velocity, not direction. Nixon's only standout was that he was tactless, uncouth, and sloppy.

  • We all know it's going to end up Trump/Rubio vs Sanders/Warren.

    • I would love to see Sanders wipe the floor with Trump. Granted, it has been shown in most surveys that the democrats could run just about anyone short of Rod Blagojevich and completely obliterate Trump. In fact, Trump's biggest enemy at this point is still himself, he polls well amongst republicans but also uniquely has the highest disapproval rating within the GOP.

Come to think of it, a Blagojevich-Trump race would be some serious entertainment. Battle of the Hairdos.

Some years ago, when Blago was just an up-and-comer in the Chicago Democratic Party (thanks to his father-in-law), my wife and I happened to meet him at some function at DePaul University. On the way home, I asked my wife what she thought of Rod, who like he

Actually I expect those two would more likely be a shared ticket than opponents, I suggested before that Blago may be close to switching parties [slashdot.org]. I could see him emerging from prison announcing that he found god (or Saint Ronnie, which is an acceptable substitution in the eyes of the GOP) and with it change parties, where all would be forgiven.

  • The people they are trying to keep agitated and motivated are their own followers, not the "kids" and the "feminists"... Nobody's trying to change their votes, which is obviously futile, but maybe you are correct, it could 'backfire' into motivating more Hillary supporters. Eh, good for them. Party on...

Nostalgia? What's nostalgic about about it? That would involve quitting. Tradition! That's the word for it... time honored and proven effective.
