This happens all the time, you just don't notice is because there is no angle to get upset about.

You've asserted this before. I don't think anyone has proposed renaming 152 kinds of birds before.

With a descriptive name, you will instantly know what the characteristics of the bird are

This is going to surprise you, but most birds are highly sexually dimorphic. The males and females (a concept that actually exists in biology) look radically different. Should we use the descriptions of the male birds for the names? Sounds patriarchal. And using the female descriptions is a problem because females have generally much more muted characteristics than the males. No one will be able to tell the species apart.

This is a terrible waste of effort.

When I'm 85 in a home somewhere and someone tells me I will die tomorrow due to some new disease, or I can live another year if we sacrifice the freedom of billions of people and run up an amount of debt my great grandchildren will be paying off, I pray to Odin that I have the stones to say "thanks, but it's not worth it".

PS3 Hacked via USB Dongle 337

dlove67 writes "PSX-scene.com reports that the first PS3 modchip has been tested and confirmed to be working. Running off of a USB dongle, it appears to be relatively user friendly and claims to not void your warranty. Online gameplay works (at least for the time being). It's been a long time coming; cheers to the PS Jailbreak Guys." The video is attached below if you're curious. Can't help but point out that this wouldn't have happened if Sony hadn't decided to yank the Boot Other OS option.

Is a US High-Speed Railway Economically Feasible? 1139

An anonymous reader writes "The federal government has committed at least $8-billion (and counting) for the development of a nationwide high-speed intercity passenger railway system in almost three-dozen states. Rail advocates have long dreamed of an extensive railway grid that will provide clean, speedy, energy-efficient travel. The high-speed rail program is also expected to create thousands of desperately needed jobs, while reducing the nation's dependence on foreign oil and easing gridlocked highways and congested air-space. However, this noble, ambitious, multi-year plan faces a multitude of obstacles — including costs that will no doubt escalate as the years pass by; and an American public that may be reluctant to relinquish the independence and convenience of their beloved automobiles for a train."
