Journal Journal: Nave Weiss

Some days ago I walked in a street and saw an house with my slashdot username written on its mailbox. It was so funny.
(His phone number is unlisted, though. Suspicious.. maybe he's me?)

Programming

Journal Journal: Palm desktop automation question 2

I want to access the palm address book data from a VBA program (from Excel), and I thought I could be able to do that in the same way you can access MS-Office programs from VB/VBA, like this (forgive me for pasting VB code here):

Option Explicit

Dim junk As Object

Public Sub piggy()
    Set junk = PalmDesktop.DesktopApplication
    MsgBox junk.CurrentUser
End Sub

But it doesn't work. The "Set..." line gives me an error about "DesktopApplication" not found (and I did add the correct references). Any idea what to do?

Journal Journal: More of Sasha and my sister 3

I'm disappointed to see that none of my fans bothered answering my previous journal. Some friends you are... >;-)

Sasha just called me. He doesn't know that I know about him and my sis. He reminded me to ask that lesbo friend of mine if she agrees to become straight for him, and also asked for instructions how to upload his picture to an online dating site.

So it might mean 2 things: either he's trying to decoy me into thinking he doesn't want my sis, or he really doesn't want her. I certainly hope it's the second option, because having them together will just mess things up for me.. and it also might explain why my sis returned home in such a nasty mood today.

Journal Journal: The unexpected visit 3

My sis' room has a back entrance, so people can get in without coming through the main entrance, and seems that tonight was the first time she actually used that.

Tonight was I passing near that room and I heard her talking to one of my best friends, Sasha (fake name ofcourse. update: and he's not a girl in case I got you confused). Apparantly he was pissed off her because she was loudly mentioning his name all the time ("Sasha, you're not doing it right!"), while he didn't want me to know that he's with her. Eventually he left her early today.

Now, she told him that if he leaves now, then it means he's finished both with HER and ME, implying that she'll tell me about it if he doesn't do what she wants.

So I thought of telling him that I know about that, so she wouldn't be able to threaten him, but my other sister told me that it's between him and her. So what do you guys think? I'm certainly shocked by that..

Now you know why I hate soap operas and telenovellas. They are just too close to life.

Journal Journal: Journal flush and SlashChick 9

I didn't like much the previous journal entry. It's entertaining but it's depressing too, so I'm writing another journal entry. I hope it's okay with you guys.

And another thing.. I was surprised to see SlashChick's pic. I was sure she's some kind of troll - her nick sounds trollish (kinda like her and her), but she seems real, unless the admin of Simpli Hosting is playing jokes on us..

Journal Journal: Precisely now: A Terror Vacation in Israel

Translated from Walla.

Entrepreneurs from Gush Etzion (a settlement in Gaza) are marketing touring packages in the settlements. The itinerary includes a weapon lesson and a flight above Gaza. The peak of the excitement is a night patrol across the settlements fences with a chance of "encounter". 5,500$ for 5 days of fear.

Two entrepreneurs from Gush Etzion has created an hallucinatory start-up: Terror tourism. The two, Jay Grinbald and Joshua Mizrachi (sp?), with the aid of the settlement's tourist fund, are marketting tourist packages for danger-loving Americans

The itinerary includes: reveille at 06:00, physical fitness and krav maga training; a lesson in weapons disassembly and assembly; a shooting range; outposts visit; helicopter flights above Hebron and Gaza and patrols and guarding in settlements. The peak of the excitement will be a night patrol across the fences of one of the settlements while knowing that there's a chance that a battle will burst in the place. So reports Yedioth Acharonot. (It's a sucky paper, you know? I don't like it much.. )

After that, the tourists will be briefed by reserve officers who served in selected units. The officers will explain them about the ways of coping with the Palestinian terror. The visiors will get to see explosive belts and a display of the weapons which were caught in the ship Karin A, and the officer will tell them about the operation which was held by the fleet troopers.

The person in charge of the IDF cooridnation, Yechezkel Klinn, promised that the tourists will get "a fine service in exchange for the money. The moment they know they have passed the Green Line and in an hostile territory, they will be sweating from fear. We will bring them closest as possible to the broiled areas. Ofcourse we will supply them the highest protection so that no one would get hurt".

22 Americans already registered to the first voyage and agreed to pay 5,500$ for 5 days of fear. A temporary delay occured since no American insurance company agreed to insure the tourists, so it appears that an Israeli company will insure them.

Ezra Munches (sp?), age 23, that in normal days works as a clerk in a Florida court, registered to the upcoming tour: "When I see in the news what happens in Israel I get upset. I can't remain calm. I would want that there would be a solution to that, but till then, I want to to take a part in the 'action' and help the soldiers who stay there. My friends are calling me crazy, but I just like the action."

It's funny. Laugh.

Journal Journal: How to make friends on slashdot 5

So, you came to slashdot and decided that you want to make friends with other geeks. The best way to make friends is talk about what interests them. I will show you several different topics and their results.

By simply writing about your life, you'll get 39 friends.
By writing a lot about your life, you'll get 90 friends.
By crapflooding and widening pages, you will get 120 friends.
By writing a journal about IT and economy, you'll get 121 friends.
By writing a lot of journals about no particular subject, you'll get 233 friends.
By fighting the admin, you'll get 249 friends.
By being the admin, you'll get 578 friends.
By being a Star Trek actor, you'll get 1198 friends.
By posting naked girls links, you'll get 1254 friends.

You do the math. I'm going to download some more pictures.

Journal Journal: Segway 3

Segway makes me disappointed.

I liked the idea a lot, and read a lot about the product, too. It seems like some kind of a magical and futuristic transportation device to me - the thing that finaly can make me feel that we've reached the year 2000.

The a big problem, from what I can see, is the limited range of the device. It can't do more than 25 kilometers. I think that's the thing that the testers most complained about in slashdot's last article about it. I guess it's the problem of the batteries who didn't develop much in the last century (fuel cells, anyone? ;)

But the main problem is the price. If it was a smaller price, it could have more success, but right now.. people aren't going to buy much of it so the price won't get down.. Segway could be great for me, like for travelling between the campuses of the university (4.5km). But I guess this will stay a dream and I'll have to use the shuttle. :(

Journal Journal: I'm sending you an SMS 4

(Don't read this unless you're really bored)

I've just heard an extremely silly song on the radio: I'm sending you an SMS by a Danish band called Barcode Brothers.

That song is obviously targeted to European audience, and it includes the incoming SMS sound (of Nokia), and also the sound of GSM radio interference. I believe it's horribly silly to write a song which glorifies SMSs, since I don't like SMSs much, and I think it's a poor substitution for communication and only useful in case the person doesn't answer the phone. This song is even sillier than Sarit Hadad's "You're a cannon"

And if we're speaking about Sarit, I wanted to mention that I suprisingly liked her last song: "Today is the day" (äéåí æä äéåí), which is a cover for a song by another girl. The original version is archaic and kinda dull, but Sarit managed to turn it into a richer song which is nice to hear, even that it still remains kitchy (The kitch is Sarit's eternal curse. What a poor girl)

Movies

Journal Journal: Sorta review: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 5

"A Greek girl marries her beloved American. Her big family wraps them with love and happiness".

Would you enjoy watching a wedding video of people you don't know? If so, you will probably enjoy this movie.

That movie has been clinging the top-10 list for a while, so I decided to see what's the fuss is all about, along with a friend of mine (who won't let me fondle her.. yet. ;).It tells the story of a Greek girl called Toula, who isn't so pretty, and past her 30th birthday. Obviously it makes her big family worry, because it's about time to get married. And after a while, she does find a guy called Ian, whom she likes and he likes her too.. but there's a problem: He's not Greek!

So the girl is having some conflicts with her dad, but as the name of the movie implies, she does get married after all, and we get to see the wedding and the entire happy crowd there.

The problem of the movie is that only good things happen there, so it can't be too interesting or exciting, since without the Bad, the Good can't exist. Besides of the minor resistance of the conservative dad, there are no problems or obstacles that the characters have to face. The movie is basically the happy story of Toula and Ian. It got its share of horrible cliches, and many jokes, some of them quite funny (especially the memorable "put some Windex on it"), but it's not enough for justifying a cinema visit.

The girl who went with me, along with her father and his girlfriend (who happened to be there too) enjoyed the movie, along with many other people, but I didn't. Maybe people who didn't enjoy in their wedding would want to see a good example for a change?

Journal Journal: Looking for a good razor 9

I'm using a shaving machine for normal days, and a gillette "sensor excel" for special evsnts (usually once a week) because the razor shaves better.

Now.. the problem is that the razor blade seems to get blunt after 2-3 weeks, even that I barely use it! And it's annoying.

Some days ago my dog ate the shaving device, so I decided that it's a good opportunity to look for another type of razor. The problem with razor blades is that giving them a long lifetime is not in the company's interests.. and seems that Gillette are very aware of that fact.

So my question is: Do you know of a better razor? Do you know of something which will hold a long time and won't require changing blade every month or so?

Journal Journal: Slashdot code update 4

Slashdot's code was refreshed today, mostly only with cosmetic changes to the preferences dialog - some of them are still buggy, but one nice option was changed and enhanced: The time zone settings.

It used to have a lot of obscure or irrelevant values (PST, EST, IDT etc), and now they finally filled it with normal values, like in the Windows time dialog.. so now I can happily set the time zone to make slashdot show the correct time for me: GMT+2 (they are wrong about the daylight time savings, but it's not their fault.. in my country, DST is changed with the early-praying population in mind, so it's not coordinated with the rest of the world (unless the ruling party is angry on the religious parties))

Journal Journal: NaveWeiss imposters 13

As silly as it sounds, I've spotted some fake NaveWeiss comments.

As you know, Slashdot will only show you your last 24 comments. So in order to keep track of my comments which I believe that they worth something, I mark their subject with the [nvws] tag, so later I can search them using this link (I also used another tag for AC messages I wrote: [weiss]. But I'm not doing that anymore).

Some days ago I searched for [nvws], and I've found some very strange stuff. Look:

The [weiss] tag received an imposter too, and in BankOfAmerica_ATM's journal, no less. Here it is

Hey, by the way, did you see the movie Office Space? Everyone on slashdot thinks it's great, but I didn't really think it was that funny. Except for Jennifer Aniston, of course :)

Anyway, I find it very amusing. I don't have lotsa fans like FortKnox, and I don't textflood like Com2Kid does, so why would anyone try to post fake messages of me? It means I have a mad fan who keeps thinking of me. It's very flattering, don't you think? ;)

Journal Journal: You're a cannon (more of Sarit Hadad) 14

Remember what I wrote about Sarit Hadad? Check this flash piece someone made about her. The song she's singing is "You're a cannon" (ata totakh).

-----
Update/explanation: This flash applet has 2 Hebrew texts in it. The first is "yalla!"* which means "go!" (click on it) and the second means "turn off sound". I guess that explaining the joke kinda ruins it. Too bad then. :)

-----
I see I've got a couple of new fans who added me with me writing little or nothing to them, namely gmhowell, heliocentric and TechnoLust. So welcome! I hope you're not the silent type.

_____
  * An "homage" to another well known song of Sarit mentioned in the other journal entry. "Yalla" is actually an Arabic word, but it's widely used in Hebrew informal speak.

Journal Journal: The Guide for Continuing Fiction Stories on Slashdot 4

I've spotted a few people on slashdot who use it to publish stories. There are many other ways and sites for publishing stories and getting feedback from readers, and slashdot isn't the best way for doing that, technically. But only on slashdot you get the funny audience, which is so diverse.

Following is a list of users who post continuing fiction stories here. If you know of any more, please update me. After clicking the links, remember to start reading from the bottom.

BankOfAmerica_ATM - Probably the first to use slashdot for posting fiction, and the most famous, for a good reason. Boa_ATM gained sentience as a result of Project Faustus which is an evil plan of Bank Of America. He fights this project, and doesn't hesitate to beam his consciousness into humans in order to do that, whether they like it or not. The story is now told from the viewpoint of a Project Faustus employee. Updated weekly (almost)

Walmart Security - Strange things are happening to an elderly Walmart security guard. I haven't finished reading the story yet, but what I've seen till now is interesting.

Projectile - New story, and I haven't figured what it is about since only one chapter has been posted.. It does raise my curiosity. (Update: 2 stories have been posted by now. Average story update rate: 1.5 months)
