Safari.app is not required for the proper functioning of Mac OS, and you can delete it like any other application. You aren't forced to use it.

Analogous perhaps from the infrastructure perspective, but not from the application perspective. I wouldn't tell a Windows application developer that he has to learn DirectX to do GUI programming in Windows.

Uh, I will. Those are not huge enterprise apps. Those are fairly simple websites operating off fairly trivial schemas. You could use PHP to do most of those websites. I don't think you really understand what enterprise means. Enterprise apps run whole businesses.

It's not the worst option, although the developer license comes with its own set of rules (like you aren't supposed to compile and distribute open source, I believe).

That, in addition to the fact that it's incredibly easy and safe to jailbreak an iPhone, makes me think this whole argument against the app store 'monopoly' is pointless. Things could be infinitely worse.

Even having a jailbroken phone AND developer license, the App Store is a handy way to find quality software quickly. It's actually the best of all worlds.

I had it over the summer. Even having started Tamiflu within 24 hours of the first symptoms, it was a solid week of awfulness, followed by another week and a half of suckiness. I lost 8 pounds in the first four days. Extremely unpleasant. By far, the sickest I've been since scarlet fever.

This is the reason why posting privileges exist. I do not use Facebook to communicate with my family members, nor do I want people who I've previously blocked from my account, to gain posting/visibility privileges on my account once I've passed away. Hopefully, Facebook will find a way to gauge and follow my wishes, or at the very least transfer over my existing permission settings, within the constraints of existing estate laws of course (actually, this is an area where a new enterprising Estate lawyer who's not afraid to use/understand technology could get his clients from, in addition to the normal Estate stuff, such a lawyer could figure out ways to keep the wishes of his deceased clients on how their Facebook page (and other online profiles/sites/email accounts/digital porn collection) should be administered after they've passed away).

This is actually a smart move Facebook is making. Targeted ads for funeral services, insurance, flowers, last minute airplane tickets, car/limo service, etc., should be a nice source of revenue for Facebook. Also sometimes, going to a last minute funeral far away is not always feasible or cost effective, for everyone involved. At least with tools like this one becoming more ubiquitous, someone could die suddenly at 2PM, his death could appear on Twitter at 2:05 PM, and the entire funeral ceremony and reception afterward could be completed entirely online through Facebook by the time it's 7 PM the same day.

The windows media streams are about 1-2 minutes behind the live events. RM stream is about 10-15 seconds behind live events. If you're getting problems with the higher bandwidth streams, then it may be because of bandwidth issues, either at your end or because there are so many people subscribed to the feed. This has happened before (LCROSS) and I've had old versions of VLC appear to lock up if the stream drops packets (I don't know which version of VLC you are using)

So? "Free" might trigger the "you get what you pay for" mentality. You could charge $50-$75 and still easily undercut Windows 7.

America's economy isn't screwed up due to "free trade" nor due to leftarded concerns over consumption. It is a recession. If you haven't noticed in the history of our country we have been in and out of dozens of these. The economy goes up sometimes and down others, it always has, it always will. Yes, manufacturing will die off more and more. This isn't a problem, we are just becoming more and more of a service based economy.

Globalization doesn't mean that one nation will win and the other will lose, assuming that it does means you are making the same economic mistake that people have made since the days of Adam Smith, namely believing trade to be a zero sum game. If I buy a $30 table from China, it doesn't mean the Chinese economy gains $30 while the US economy loses $30, it means I gain a table I value more than my $30 dollars while the Chinese table maker gains $30 which they value more than their table. Both of us have gained something more valuable to us. The $30 wasn't lost value. Money is just a token of value, it isn't the inherent source of it. Money is just an easy way to exchange value for goods and services. It also isn't like the Chinese table maker will eat the $30, they will likely use it to buy stuff (labor, supplies, investments, etc.) and at some point there will be something the US makes that will be exchanged, and even if there isn't something every country is best at, comparative advantage will eventually work it's way in over time.

Funny enough, iTunes appeared on my computer after an outage in our corporate systems management software. We were not told about this (either the outage or iTunes). Right now I'm working on the assumption that someone tried to deploy quicktime and failed horribly.

Ah, but what about the collisions that never happened? That's the point. A rider without the protection of a cage will driver gingerly and NOT GET into a fatal collision. Whereas, a driver who knows that their airbag will deploy will drive less carefully than a car without airbags.
