Salesforce Tells Employees It's Working On NFT Cloud Service (cnbc.com) 15

Salesforce told employees at a sales kickoff on Wednesday that the company plans to release an NFT Cloud. CNBC reports: Salesforce co-CEOs Marc Benioff and Bret Taylor both talked about the strategy at the online event, said one person who attended. The person asked not to be named because the event was private. Executives at the meeting referenced NFT-related work that Pepsi has done as an example, another person said. Salesforce, which provides cloud-based software for sales reps, marketing departments and e-commerce vendors, wants to offer a service for artists to create content and release it on a marketplace like OpenSea, one person said.

Last month, OpenSea said it raised $300 million at a $13.3 billion valuation, on the back of a surge in NFT trading, which surpassed $23 billion in 2021, according to DappRadar, a store for decentralized apps. Salesforce could also potentially integrate the tool into its own ecosystem, where transactions could be managed, the people said. A Salesforce-owned marketplace could mean there wouldn't be a need to use OpenSea.

Can't wait to see it fail miserably.

What is the difference between and NFT and a Beanie Baby (or any other collectible)? When they have no intrinsic value the only thing that drives value is desire. Very few collectibles hold their value over time.

    • It is the act of separating fools from their money. It is an age old tradition. I can only sit back and laugh.

A Beanie Baby you can actually put on your shelf, and it's all yours. An NFT... Not so much.

    • I think there is a very significant difference between an NFT and a Beanie Baby: Beanie Babies are made out of physical matter and exist in the real world. NFTs, by contrast, are just data, and only exist in hard drives or computer memory.

I suppose you could possibly print or 3d print an NFT, depending on the contents, but of course that would just be an image of it, not the thing in itself.

Personally, I think that the ease with which digital data can be duplicated and transferred is the greater part of w

      • Even the image itself usually is not stored in the blockchain. The entry in the blockchain is usually just a URL.

My point is they are both collectibles and while they may be a fad (or just a scam) now, they won't be later.

What if I make an entry in another blockchain with the same URL? Which is the real one?

  • ... because they were trying to mess with Salesforce's share price, seems vastly more likely, but I guess giant corporations jump on all sorts of dumb bandwagons all the time.

    • Just goes to show Salesforce has more money than smarts. But anyone who has used their product(s), already knows they are lacking in that department though.

I don't anything says 'jump the shark' more clearly than a cloud-based CRM megacorp incorporated wading into the NFT pool. If I had any financial interest in this field I would begin thinking about unwinding

  • Like, why would I want to use a Salesforce marketplace rather than OpenSea?

This is a major presumption that seems to follow this discordant logic: "It's an older company from a totally different market sector so it must be better!"

But with this announcement I'm going to have to throw my weight behind the team pushing to cancel the change.
Salesforce being incompetent or unaccountable enough to declare their move to Digital Tulips, tax evasion and outright fraud? Don't want our BCI & PII stores attached to that mindset.

Don't panic.
