Zoep Goes Open Source

Gaim 2.0 (currently in beta) actually has support for SIP/SIMPLE [sourceforge.net] thanks to the Google Summer of Code [sourceforge.net].

So we've actually had VoIP capabilities in open source projects since last summer.

Yes, but Gaim2 is utter tripe. It offers nothing over version 1.5 (except a veritable bucketload of new bugs), has a really ugly and non-intuitive interface and I have a pet hate in it's file browse dialog box.

There is no real good quality end to end VOIP solution in open source yet, which is surprising given that open source communities have done some really good work in audio and video compression (Vorbis, XviD) technologies as well as distributed networking (BitTorrent).

Even if GAIM has SIP/SIMPLE in the 2.0.0 beta releases, it's only for the text portions of SIP. (Yes, SIP supports text-based instant messaging. Shockingly, Microsoft Windows Messenger (not MSN Messenger) uses SIP as its default protocol.

GAIM does *NOT* have "vv" (voice and video) support in the current 2.0.0 beta release, and will not have it in 2.0.0 final. It was planned, but removed because it wasn't anywhere close to ready. RTFGN (Read The Fing GAIM News).

We already have kphone (a QT-based phone, but no KDE integration, so no aRts), iaxcomm (IAX protocol only) and linphone (GTK).

While they are good projects, and I hope that they continue their developments, they are not exactly mainstream:

- kphone/linphone: Setting up SIP accounts is hell for people not familiar with SIP (and behind firewalls/natted).

- iaxcomm: Wonderful, easy to use/setup even behind NAT, but you must first setup your own Asterisk server.

You don't need an asterisk server to use iaxComm. Peer to peer works just fine. I _think_ I put instruction in the online help, but they're also on the web page, and in the QUICKSTART that comes with the source

Actually, the best of these apps all of you have mentioned is WengoPhone http://www.openwengo.com/ [openwengo.com] - qt interface, uses ALSA, have working Linux video capabilities, "and more..." Check it out, it's GPL and very good indeed.

Does OpenZoep run on Zope? Who comes up with these names? I swear, these names sound like they come from a Dr. Seuss book. "If you hope to wash soup off a rope, simply scrub it with SKROPE! Skrope is so strong that no rope is too long!"

In order to get a domain name of reasonable length and not violate any trademarks it is essentially necessary to make up a word. Dr. Seuss would make a fortune naming companies today.

So... you want to be able to have a single number ring through to 10 alternate numbers at the same time? That makes no sense!

No, actually it makes perfect sense. This is implemented in all traditional PABXes - e.g. someone phones your business and it rings several phones. Whichever is picked up first gets the call. Or another popular implementation of the same idea is hunt groups - i.e. a call comes in and it rings for a short time on one phone, if it isn't answered it rings another phone instead.

Are there any actively maintained open source voip programs that support encrypted connections? I'm currently filling that need with speakfreely. It does the job well, but has it's shortcomings.

Skype is almost there, but I find it unsuitable for conversing with folks using dial-up connections, in addition to not being open source.

There is a Linux version. Right on the front page, they offer versions for Windows and Linux. The Linux version has video too. They are still improving it but a working version is there to download - 3.5MB in size. Two other versions under development are mentioned but not available for download - Mac and Palm. May be you got confused by that?
