Journal Journal: So over XFS 1

XFS on ARM has bugs. An XFS filesystem of 1TB or so will take over 1GB memory to simply replay the journal, let alone xfs_repair. And finally, my XFS partition just ate its superblock for the second time while rsyncing its contents to the backup volume, which I have just formatted to ext4. Goodbye, XFS. You're a fuckup.

Software

Journal Journal: unison fail

Remote unison requires the same version on both ends. The download site is timing out. In theory: very cool. In practice: quite useless.

Microsoft

Journal Journal: An Open Journal to Microsoft 8

I will not pay more than twenty bucks for something which should be free. I think we both know I'm talking about Xbox Live.

Ubuntu

Journal Journal: Today's Ubuntu GNOME failure

Today gnome-settings-daemon failed to start. emerald started up right for the first time in a half-dozen boot sequences. Come on, guys. Try harder.

Journal Journal: In-Game editing of terrain and objects? 2

I know that there's Sauerbraten but I want something that will let me treat terrain like a poly, like in Qoole. I want to use such a tool for landscaping mockup/walkthrough. Anyone know a game with this feature? I was inspired by the limited but still way better than nothing tools in Halo Reach.

Journal Journal: Thunderfail 5

I fire up thunderbird and the first thing it does with inbox selected is download headers for the trash folder. Fail, fail.

Ubuntu

Journal Journal: I want my GDM! 2

For some reason, I booted up my computer and got no gdm. It's installed and I can startx, haven't even tried starting gdm yet. Ubuntu 10.10. WTF.

Ubuntu

Journal Journal: Ubuntu/nVidia 1

Why is it that I have to add a PPA to get the latest nVidia driver on Maverick? It's not like it's an LTS release.

Journal Journal: Comments not getting adjectives? 6

I'm getting positive moderation but my comments aren't getting adjectives. Is Slashdot broken or am I receiving some sooper sekrit mod that I've just blown the cover on?

Advertising

Journal Journal: U.S.Cellular at new lows with snailmail spam 1

Not only is U.S. Cellular deluging the nation with spam in a vain attempt to draw customers to their expensive plans, now they're putting ads into plastic envelopes. Pop-up ads, in the sense of a pop-up book. The message I receive is that if I become a U.S. Cellular customer I am paying for a lot of bullshit, toxic advertising.
