Comment Linux Most of the time (Score 1) 1880

About two years ago I switched to using Kubuntu most of the time. I still dual boot on both the desktop and notebook, but a majority of the time is spent on the Linux side.

I wouldn't have enough money to buy licenses for all the old boxes we have in the house, but with Linux they are all up and running, and each kid has their own Linux computer.

My hardware is too old to play the latest and greatest games, and with lack of free time, I like to fire up Civilization 4 for the occasional gaming bug. get Civ 4 to work under WINE, and I'd ditch Windows all together.

Libreoffice is good enough for me, and I like the feature that can print straight to pdf.

My Creative Zen is recognized under Kubuntu, and so is our ancient laser printer.

The kids computers run Linux (this month's flavor is Lubuntu) and they love it.

Air National Guard computers at work, so it's Windows 7, locked down with a virus scanner that does a FULL SCAN of EVERY DAMN FILE everyday! Our only option is to "postpone for one hour". Takes about 15 minutes from once it's turned on to being able to work. Everything else is locked down, even forbidden to adjust the clock if we wanted to. Home is Kubuntu computers (11.04) and a Win7 box for various games that I'm too lazy to get working under Kubuntu. Kid's box is a dual-boot of Vista and Kubuntu 11.04. They spend a overwhelmingly amount of time on the Kubuntu side.

So in 2009, the industry takes a new approach: owning your cellphone.
This is already happening with some of the new cell phones out there. My daughter (had) the Sidekick, and it was basically a rented cell phone. You had to sign up for the $25 monthly data plan to get any functionality out of the phone. All contacts were stored on the server, along with ring tones and texts. Take away the $25 a month, and every time the phone is turned off, it returns to factory default and loses everything.
You were not allowed to import your own ring tones, but had to download from their list.

Journal Journal: N.C. State is Fighting the RIAA

The Recording Industry Association of America has upped its campaign against N.C. State students downloading music with 23 lawsuits.(1) Originally, the RIAA was only sending letters regarding a settlement students could pay to avoid legal action. However, the organization has now sent lawsuits to 37 who elected not to settle. Student Legal Services, led by Pam Gerace, can't stress enough that students who are caught up with the RIAA have support and can

Journal Journal: Virginia Tech shooting 3

'm sure we're about to see years of commentary on the shooting that happened today at Virginia Tech. 32 people are dead, because of one murderer who (by current reports) was armed with a couple of handguns.

Background reading for perspective:

1) A comparable attack happened at a law school in Virginia in 2002; the killer was stopped when 2 other students retrieved a handgun and subdued him.
