Submission + - How Not to Design a UI: Slashdot Beta Site is a Train Wreck (slashdot.org) 1

iggymanz writes: As with Canonical's Unity and Windows 8, the majority of otherwise intelligent coders are completely out of their element when trying to make a user interface. They fly off on tangents, ignoring any user needs or input, making something understood and useable only to themselves. A bad UI is neither discoverable, learnable, efficient of space, nor capable of providing proper feedback to the user. With apologies, I link to the vilest and most aweful forum interface misdesigned by the minds of idiot-savants in full idiot mode, the Slashdot Beta Site.

There have been security vulnerabilities in Winamp. I think it's mostly based on funky decoders and streaming stuff. This doesn't really affect me since I trust the source of my ripped music and don't stream stuff.

My buddy works for the company. If you watched their promo video, you would see that they make dental parts and medical implants as well as aerospace and machine parts.

P.S. The news outlets got it wrong. The company is headquartered in Santa Clarita, California. Texas is their only office with a Federal Firearms License.

You don't know what Stallman is about, do you? He doesn't care about "getting work done" or even open source, his objective is freedom and always has been. His goal wasn't to build popular software, it was always to make software that respects the user's freedom. If big companies want to build on his ideas, that's great. The second they stop respecting the user's freedom is the second they are no longer helping the community.

My favorite torture experience in a game will always be Quake 4. SPOILER ALERT: In the game you're captured by the enemy aliens and strapped into an assembly line where machines saw off your arms and legs while still conscious to replace them with robotic limbs. You fall in and out of consciousness as they pump you full of adrenaline to keep you alive. They slice open your chest and bolt armor onto your body and jam a syringe into your brain to implant some kind of device that allows you to understand their language. All this happens while you watch the poor bastard in front of you go through the same thing and scream bloody murder.

I remember this vividly as some of the most emotion a game has ever evoked out of me. Great game, I've beaten it twice :)

You're not the only one. I was just getting into music and metal when Napster came around, and I decided I would avoid listening to Metallica and not download their stuff since they didn't want me to.

You should see the look on people's faces when we have conversations like this? "You like Slayer?" Yeah! "You like Pantera?" Yeah! "You like Megadeth?" Fuck yeah! "You like Metallica?" Eh, not really. That's when their jaws hit the floor.

I work for a limousine service, here's just a couple of things I can think of off the top of my head. Insurance, which was mentioned earlier. If you get in an accident, is this guy's private not-for-hire insurance going to cover you? We drug test, I can't imagine an individual drug testing himself. We monitor employee's hours making sure that they get enough sleep and we see them in person when they pick up cars. We're able to judge their appearance to make sure they look fit and healthy enough to drive and are also dressed professionally. We wash our cars every day. We have an office that keeps track of things and can send another car to pick up a passenger should something unexpected happen. If you use Lyft and schedule a pickup and then your single and only driver needs to make stops or gets stuck in traffic, what do you do next? We check their DMV record and straight up fire people if they get into 2 accidents in too short of a time span. We do regular maintenance on the vehicles constantly to make sure they're in top operating condition. In this industry, you get what you pay for. We're a business and we're good at what we do and have streamlined processes for making our business run efficiently. If you go with some Joe off the street, he's going to be learning all of this from day 1.
