What is your biggest fear? After the TrueCrypt developers were apparently threatened or otherwise convinced to abandon development, does the NSA worry you? The FBI has been complaining about encryption lately too, as have law enforcement agencies in other countries. Or is there something else that concerns you?

Rumored to cost about $150. Yes it costs much more than the Pi but you get what you pay for; a boat load of processing power and memory.

If you don't treat it as a computer like most people who don't use them then you already get way more than you pay for.

The vast majority of the projects the RPi are being used for could be done by a microcontroller. So when you compare them against other devices used in the same application then for the same cost of an Arduino you get 15x the speed, 100x the RAM, and Ethernet, and OS with a complete TCP/IP stack ready to go.

Anyone who really complains about the price of the RPi is expecting it to be something it's not. There are plenty of boards far more powerful than the RPi for under $100 and they don't sell anywhere near as well, don't have anywhere near the same number of projects being developed for them and don't have even a fraction of the community support.

I'm not sure what plans are like in the USA, but here in Australia and from what I've seen from family in Europe people watch their data caps and couldn't care less about their SMS plans. The included value on SMSes even for the lowest tier plans is in the order of several hundred messages a day and you need to be a teenage girl in her first love to start worrying about hitting SMS allowances.

If the bounds of your system are known then you most definitely can have too much RAM. It's not a general purpose computer, the goal is not to run multiple workloads of unknown size, the goal is to develop an application that fits within the bounds of the hardware.

A lot of the PC types here on Slashdot don't get this and think it's underpowered.
A lot of the engineering types who realise that the Raspberry Pi is the same cost as the Arduinos they have been using but has 15x the clock speed and 100x the RAM do.

It's not the only question. Clearly if it's twice as hard for one person to reduce their weight and they see half the results it will require more willpower. If we can make it easier to lose weight they are likely to be more successful with their available willpower.

It's like nicotine patches for smokers. You can just quit without aids but it's much easier if you have them.

NO. I cannot stress that enough. People do need to take responsibility for fixing the problem, but they need help and tools to do it. At least now we understand another problem they have and can look for ways to help them.

Fox News / Daily Mail style outrage is easy, but it doesn't help anyone.

It's funny how that seems a lot like America. Leaders are chosen mostly based on charisma, e.g. the ability to do well in TV debates and project a good image in advertising. Americans are very proud of their heritage and their country, and I needn't even start on the until trillions spent on "security". Being strong on security is a requirement for any president.

Submission + - Scientists Discover a Virus That Changes the Brain to 'Makes Humans More Stupid' (ibtimes.co.uk) 1

concertina226 writes: Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and the University of Nebraska have discovered an algae virus that makes us more stupid by infecting our brains.

The researchers were conducting a completely unrelated study into throat microbes when they realised that DNA in the throats of healthy people matched the DNA of a chlorovirus virus known as ATCV-1.

ATCV-1 is a virus that infects the green algae found in freshwater lakes and ponds. It had previously been thought to be non-infectious to humans, but the scientists found that it actually affects cognitive functions in the brain by shortening attention span and causing a decrease in spatial awareness.

For the first time ever, the researchers proved that microorganisms have the ability to trigger delicate physiological changes to the human body, without launching a full-blown attack on the human immune system.
