My position on copyrights and patents was always the same: abolish all patents and copyrights and prevent government from providing monopolies with these laws.

Basically this is nearly the ultimate absurd result that we are seeing here and it probably can even get worse. You want to build a road somewhere? Well, you are violating a copyright on other people building horizontal surfaces to allow circular wheels (and legs I suppose) to run on them. You want to build a house? Are you going to have a roof? Foundation? Walls? Windows? Doors? Fucking copyright violator. Absurd, isn't it? Or is it really absurd to expect that ruling like that can actually be passed given the fact that it is a government entity that can pass that ruling and given that governments are already given authority to rule on these issues?

No, the real solution is not even about money exchanging hands (though I wouldn't be surprised in case of Oracle), it is about the power that governments have over our heads, and this power is as insane as it is absurd.

No company or person should be given government protected monopoly on anything, including any invention, copyright, whatever. That's not how evolution works, that's not how cultures worked and still keep working. That type of power is destructive, not constructive in any way. Let the people and companies decide how to provide their services and products in a world that does not automatically protect them from any type of competition. At the very least this cannot be a power granted to government, deal with these issues on contract basis and using trade secrets if you must.

This is API, API is information about CONNECTING pieces together, it is a contract information, definition of connectivity, not implementation details.

This is not a problem that is just related to Java somehow either, this concerns everything, every language, nearly every field and industry.

No, this is for small in-house things. For things going out, we do a much better job, with real schematic capture and real layout tools.

If you're just looking for a quick fix, there is no 1-day PCB turnaround under $100.

Sure there is (if you allow a day for shipping). I can get 3 pieces of a miniboard from expresspcb.com for $51 + shipping. IIRC, one-day shipping is a bit over $20, so for $75 I can send off a design before 1:00, and have the boards before 1:00 two days later.

If all you need is 1 print and you're a hobbyist or need something one-off, that is unacceptable.

As I said in my initial email, that depends on whether your time is valuable. In my experience, it takes a lot less total time to get a working prototype with a PCB than without, unless your circuit is very small. So if you can wait a couple of days for your circuit, and you have other things to do in the meantime (e.g. your time is valuable) and you'd like to spend less total time on the board (e.g. your time is valuable), then not laying out a board is unacceptable.

Of course, you can do whatever you want. I've seen people dead-bug 176 pin QFNs and make them work. If you find detailed work like that therapeutic, fine. But if you have other stuff to do, it can quickly become cost-ineffective.

3. Hotels being in so called 'commercial districts' does not change the hotel customers being drunk 1 block away from the hotel, beside which hotels are mostly located near private housing anyway, not in factory or warehouse zones.

But as 3D metal printing technology advances (and it won't be long, as it was only a handful of months ago that all there was out there was the Liberator plastic single-shot and now there's metal 1911-style semi-auto pistols being produced.), expect the cost/time required to drop dramatically and for quality to keep pace.

"Superior"? Probably not for a little while yet, but at the same time it will not be long at the rate 3D printing tech advances these days. "Legitimate application"? Depends a lot on what you would consider a "legitimate application", but I get your point and in many cases you would be correct. This will soon not be true as 3D printing technology advances & matures, however.

That'd be like etching a pcb without testing the circuit on a breadboard first. Sure, it is what you have to do for large complex projects. But for most small projects it is painfully slow and error prone.

Etching a PCB (well, actually, letting somebody like expresspcb do it) instead of testing a circuit on a breadboard first is something I do all the time.

If you're ready to accept a breadboard, that means you're willing to accept one or two for a start, and they don't have to be pretty, which means that if they were PCBs, you wouldn't mind a few blue-wires.

If you're in that position, and your circuit has more than a few handfuls of nets on it, and your time is valuable and you have other stuff to do before your circuit comes back, and you're halfway proficient at electronics and at double-checking your work...

If all those things are true, you'll have a much nicer working PCB in much less time than it would take to get your crappy, flaky breadboard working.

As the saying goes, YMMV, but that's been my experience over decades of doing this.

I don't think he's dismissing the concept so much as dismissing the current field operatives as being anywhere near as far along as they promote themselves to be.
