Thelasko writes:

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Lawrence ruled the Daily Herald and Comcast must reveal the identity of a person who posted a comment on dailyherald.com directed toward the teenage son of Buffalo Grove Village Trustee Lisa Stone.

Even if Comcast reveals the identity, how does one prove that that person in fact posted that comment.

Submission + - SPAM: ASCAP Sues AT&T Over Ringtones Heard In Public

Thelasko writes: The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is suing AT&T claiming that each time the ringtone plays it counts as a public performance and a royalty should be paid. The article goes on to note that ASCAP wants the carrier to pay the royalties and not the consumer. Like that really makes a difference.

Submission + - SPAM: Windows Required for Unemployment

Thelasko writes: The state of Illinois requires Microsoft Internet Explorer to file for benefits online. When filing using Firefox, a screen appears stating:

...Windows is required. Some Mac users have successfully used the Boot Camp utility — available in the OS X v10.5 Leopard — to run Windows XP and Internet Explorer and access these services.

it goes on to say

IDES recommends that you switch to Internet Explorer to file a claim or to register. Please return to the IDES home page ([spam URL stripped]) to start the process again using IE.

Is this a form of discrimination?

Submission + - SPAM: Debunking the myths of Columbine

Thelasko writes: With today being the ten year anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre, CNN has a story about the myths surrounding the tragedy.

The Trench Coat Mafia was a nonviolent school group of computer gamers established a few years before the shooting, Cullen said. They feuded with the jocks and wore black trench coats. Harris and Klebold were not members, Cullen concluded after talking to students at the school and analyzing police documents.

I was in high school when the massacre occurred. Unfortunately, this myth in particular resulted in many nerds incorrectly and unjustly profiled by the faculty at my school. Many of them were sent home and essentially suspended for wearing the wrong clothes.

Submission + - SPAM: Should Compiling be Made Simple?

Thelasko writes: While browsing through Ubuntu's Brainstorm Page, I noticed that many users are complaining about how difficult it is to compile software from source. While there are legitimate reasons for doing so, I feel that a simple GUI to compile software from source will encourage this method among new users. Should compiling be made easy enough for new users to accomplish? At what point do you stop obeying the user's request, and do what you feel is right?

Submission + - SPAM: WKOW Now Uses Ubuntu

Thelasko writes: WKOW-TV in Madison Wisconsin, infamous for it's story covering a woman who dropped out of college and blamed Ubuntu, has installed Ubuntu on it's "Call for Action" call center computers. WKOW's Dan Cassuto says,

I'm told WKOW was looking for cost savings without sacrificing a stable, well-regarded operating system that would let our team research consumer complaints and help viewers.

Glad to hear this story has a happy ending.

Submission + - SPAM: Spam Back to 94% of All E-Mail

Thelasko writes: The New York Times reports that the volume of spam has returned to the levels seen before the McColo was shut down. Adam Swidler, of Postini Services says, "It's unlikely we are going to see another event like McColo where taking out an I.S.P. has that kind of dramatic impact on global spam volumes." This is sad news for us all.
