You are talking about corporations, TFA is about nations.

The five countries -- the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark -- have failed to align their oil and gas policies

Submission + - Boeing whistleblower found dead one day after testifying (npr.org)

wgoodman writes: Police in Charleston, S.C., are investigating the death of John Barnett, a former Boeing quality control manager who became a whistleblower when he went public with his concerns about serious safety issues in the company's commercial airplanes.

Barnett's body was found in a vehicle in a Holiday Inn parking lot in Charleston on Saturday. One day earlier, he testified about the string of problems he says he identified at Boeing's plant where he once helped inspect the 787 aircraft before delivery to customers.

Police say officers were sent to the hotel to conduct a welfare check after people were unable to contact Barnett, who had traveled to Charleston to testify in his lawsuit against Boeing.

"Upon their arrival, officers discovered a male inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the head," police said in a statement sent to NPR. "He was pronounced deceased at the scene."

The office of Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said that Barnett, who had been living in Louisiana after retiring from Boeing, died "from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

When Boeing and McDonnell-Douglas merged, Boeing was an engineer-driven company with a track record of producing high quality aircraft, and McDonnell was an MBA-driven company with a track record of producing shoddy, problematic airccraft. Since Boeing has a much better reputation...

I really don't know where you got that idea - aside from reading other coments - but the DC-10, and later the MD-11 was about the nicest jet out there, IMO. Spacious, large, and very quiet, with the engines at the back. If you had ever flown one you would know that 'Boeng built higher quality aircraft ' is pure BS.

Submission + - Lead from gasoline blunted the IQ of about half the U.S. population, study says (nbcnews.com)

ArchieBunker writes: Exposure to leaded gasoline lowered the IQ of about half the population of the United States, a new study estimates.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focuses on people born before 1996 — the year the U.S. banned gas containing lead.

Overall, the researchers from Florida State University and Duke University found, childhood lead exposure cost America an estimated 824 million points, or 2.6 points per person on average.

Certain cohorts were more affected than others. For people born in the 1960s and the 1970s, when leaded gas consumption was skyrocketing, the IQ loss was estimated to be up to 6 points and for some, more than 7 points. Exposure to it came primarily from inhaling auto exhaust.

Submission + - OpenAI pushes back against Musk (theguardian.com)

quonset writes: A few days ago Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI claiming the company was abandoning its not-for-profit status and not developing AI to benefit humanity.

To counter this argument, OpenAI has released a series of emails between itself and Musk showing Musk wanted control over OpenAI and for the company to be merged with Tesla.

OpenAI said the suggestion for a Tesla merger came after Musk and the company decided the next step was to create a for-profit entity in 2017 to generate capital for building artificial general intelligence, or AGI. The term refers to a theoretical form of AI that can achieve a range of tasks at a level of competence at or above human levels of intelligence.

Musk, who this week was overtaken as the world’s richest man by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, then wanted a majority of the equity, initial board control and to be chief executive of OpenAI, the company said.

But OpenAI and Musk could not agree to terms on a for-profit because the startup felt that it was against the mission for any individual to have absolute control over the firm.

Submission + - Spanish Power Is Almost Free With Renewables Set for Record (bnnbloomberg.ca)

AmiMoJo writes: Electricity prices in Spain have slumped to almost nothing as the nation’s wind and solar parks are churning out more power than ever. Day-ahead prices remained below €10 per megawatt-hour for the last week and output in the Mediterranean nation is on track for a record this month. Daily solar production on Wednesday jumped to the highest since early October and the surge is likely to last into March.

The slump is also impacting power flows in southwest Europe, with Spain currently selling into France, which is one of Europe’s biggest exporters. The commodity flows to the market with cheapest prices on an hourly basis and grid data shows Spain exporting since Feb. 21. Prices for Friday settled at €2.14 in Spain, the lowest since early November, and €67.21 in France.
