Comment Re:60 Hz. hum in audio equipment (Score 1) 790

Actually the audible buzz from the speakers of most audio equipment is 100/120Hz due to full wave rectification which doubles the frequency. There are families of harmonics too.
A sound restoration area I'm involved with uses the mains hum present on old master recordings to determine the optimal playback speed.

"When the USA was trying to form a liberal democracy Iraq and Afghanistan, what happened? A bunch of insurgencies with attacks with homemade bombs on the troops."
I think you mean: When the US (and allies) were trying to impose THEIR idea of how to live. Whilst liberal democracy works quite well in in the west, that doesn't mean it can be transplanted into any society successfully. Many of those who have lived under dictatorships or tribally have no concept of how to integrate with it so it is hardly surprising that even ordinary folk, let alone those with a stake, will rebel.

"Well let's see... the IRA/English's battle over Northern Ireland (largely drawn across Catholic/Protestant religious lines) cease fire was just over 20 years ago. And the final peace accord was only 17 years ago. That marked the end of 30 years of assassinations, murders, bombings, and attacks all of which were surrounded by religious fervour."
Wrong. The conflict was about differing traditions and governance. The fact that the 2 groups had differing flavours of Christianity was a detail.
