Submission + - Italy: High Court shoots down Windows tax (fsfe.org)

jrepin writes: Italy's High Court has struck a blow to the practice of forcing non-free software on buyers of PCs and laptops. The judges sharply criticised the practice of selling PCs only together with a non-free operating system as "a commercial policy of forced distribution". The court slammed this practice as "monopolistic in tendency". It also highlighted that the practice of bundling means that end users are forced into using additional non-free applications due to compatibility and interoperability issues, whether they wanted these programs or not.

Submission + - Laid off from job, man builds tweeting toilet (computerworld.com)

dcblogs writes: With parts from an electric motor, a few household items, an open-source hardware board running Linux, and some coding, Thomas Ruecker, built a connected toilet that Tweets with each flush. The first reaction to the Twitter feed at @iotoilets may be a chuckle. But the idea behind this and what it illustrates is serious. It tracks water usage, offers a warning about the future of privacy in the Internet of Things, and may say something about the modern job hunt. Ruecker built his device on a recent long weekend after he was laid off as an open source evangelist at a technology firm undergoing "rightsizing," as he put it. He lives in Finland.

Submission + - Microsoft killing off Windows Phone brand name in favor of just Windows

DroidJason1 writes: Microsoft is killing off the "Windows Phone" name in favor of Windows. The company also plans to drop the "Nokia" name from handsets in favor of just "Lumia." These details were revealed in a leaked memo. We've already begun seeing these changes in recent advertisements from Microsoft and it makes perfect sense seeing as how Microsoft is shifting towards one operating system to rule them all.

If it's unlikely that life can appear I think it's even more unlikely that intelligent life can occur.

I once did put what I thought was plausible figures into the Drake equation and ended up with a value of about 0.8.

Mostly because I think that the chance of an intelligent civilization is low. I find it much more likely for life to appear and spread in a galaxy than for intelligent life to appear that is able to develop technology.

And here's a video of one.

For buses on regular routes used for public transportation it's a viable alternative since they don't need to drag batteries around.

It's of course possible to have a smaller battery pack and a diesel engine as backup for cases when the overhead lines aren't available for one reason or another.

There are also extra-long buses used in public transportation systems.

Trams are also an alternative, but they have the disadvantage of holding up the line if there's a malfunction in one - or even multiple lines if the city traffic router have decided to make all lines intersect in a non-redundant manner.

Submission + - Icy Jupiter moon may be actively recycling its surface (sciencemag.org)

sciencehabit writes: Europa, the intriguing ice-encrusted moon of Jupiter, may be resurfaced through plate tectonics, scientists have discovered. The result would make Europa the only known body in the solar system besides Earth with plate tectonics, a process in which cold giant platters of crustâ"or in this case, iceâ"float around on top of warmer, more viscous layers in the bodyâ(TM)s interior. The discovery also makes the moon more interesting in the search for extraterrestrial life, because the recycling action of plate tectonics would provide an important way to exchange chemicals between the surface and the water ocean that lies beneath the moonâ(TM)s ice cap.

Submission + - Reddit Moderator Outs Reddit Admins (soundcloud.com) 8

Khyber writes: While the censorship is strong over at Reddit, details from a (former) moderator of one of the largest subreddits on the site have been leaked in the form of an an audio recording of a Skype conversation between an unidentified journalist and the moderator himself. User posts are being deleted rapidly from Reddit over in the /r/gaming subreddit, users are being shadowbanned, or hard-banned. (I've had my account dropped.) Really interesting parts of the 50-minute long audio sit around ~10:30 and ~26 minute marks, where the moderator details threats made against him and other moderators, and also a bit near the end regarding their censorship/spam control tools, and how anyone can effectively be banned for any made up reason, commonly-used ones being vote manipulation, brigading, and alt account creation. There is also talk about how subreddits for encryption get monitored much more closely and censored much more often than larger subreddits, such as /r/gaming.

As someone I know has put it, "...given that Reddit says that it views itself as a government for a new type of community, this is disturbing."
