Journal Journal: Someplace to record it - chromium build chrome

Building chromium (aka google chrome from source)

I need someplace that isn't my backups to record this so here goes and have no other real home for it.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxBuildInstructions
http://dev.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/install-depot-tools

My build script (assumes ccache is installed, got the source initallu and you have got the depot_tools installed somewhere on your path)
-----------------------------------
#enable ccache
export CC='ccache gcc-4.4'
export CXX='ccache g++-4.4'

#do the build
export GYP_GENERATORS=make && gclient runhooks --force && gclient sync --deps="unix,chromeos" && cd /sourcetrees/programs/chromium/src && make -j3 BUILDTYPE=Release V=1

------------------------

the .gclient file
------------------
solutions = [
    { "name" : "src",
        "url" : "http://src.chromium.org/svn/trunk/src",
        "deps_file" : "DEPS",
        "custom_deps" : {
        },
        "safesync_url": "http://chromium-status.appspot.com/lkgr",
    },
]
-------------------------
Note the safe synch url
http://dev.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/get-the-code
"This URL holds the version of the latest revision to pass only unit tests (in debug mode). This can happen faster, so for most developers this is probably what you want since it will help you ensure that your changes work against a "fresher" version of Chromium."

Takes hours, needs lots of memory, DEBUG build is even worse.

Why gcc-4.4 apparently there is some bug that prevents it building with gcc-4.5 (Ubuntu 11.04 default), don't have it handy right now. Adding -Dwerror= to the make command may tell it to ignore the errors and continue but am yet to try this.

Journal Journal: Does anyone care about sport?

Prepared to put your pride on the line? Not that USA will have much left after the Rugby World Cup.

What about we do a football tipping competition? Sites exist to do all the dog work if you can live with them having your email address, first born child and so forth. NFL, Rugby World Cup.

Is there enough people that care?

Journal Journal: [work] It's on like Donkey Kong 2

Multi-billion dollar project - check
Work actually underway on project with customers signed - check
Finally recruiting for roles I am suitable for - check

Of the three big projects going on - this is really the first to advertise for roles I am suitable for and I want. Want so bad I can taste it. Long term interesting work with a myriad of opportunities to follow in the years ahead.

Big money, big ideas, huge customers, very specific skills and abilities required. Make or break time for me.

I am not surprised it has taken this long, back in 2007 when I left a previous job I thought it would be about 2012 when these jobs were advertised. It looks like they are advertising for a team - not unexpected - and will juggle the applicant pool to get the team they want. This is a good sign for me as I am quite adaptable.

First of the applications in.

Still think I may need some help getting across to an interview but I really only have a cannon to use and I don't want to waste the ammunition.

"As Mozilla increasingly focused on being the best browser for mobile devices, we will need to focus on battery usage. This is already an issue on laptops, where some browser activities like playing movies can chew through battery very quickly, but it is even more an issue on smaller phone and tablet devices where batteries are smaller and users expect at least a full day of battery life.

The first part of this project will be accurately measuring our power usage under various conditions. As with any software engineering project, you are what you measure! To that end, Mozilla is looking for both volunteers and potential paid employees who are experienced at measuring and tuning power usage on small devices. If you have experience with software or hardware tools for measuring power usage (both is even better)"

Journal Journal: Damn you US dollar - first world problem 1

The US dollar was supposed to crash and then wife and I could afford a nice holiday in Hawaii. As it is probably go to Vanuatu for about half the cost. Not as much to do, but then again who wants to do too much on a holiday.

Appears the problem is that it is Pipeline season in November when we want to travel and all the accommodation we want is booked. But I did want to be there for the coffee festival.

I don't understand the travel industry - why is it so hard to get a quote and a price on a package deal even for so called experts unless they have a pre-made package to hand - which they then try and upsell on to try and annoy the shit out of you. First quote at one place took an hour. Why is it so hard? Of course most of the travel websites are tied to various partners so you can't see all the options.

Journal Journal: I am trying to care

but giving a shit is a bit much effort at the moment

Sat down here an hour ago - actual time to do something i want even though I "should" be looking at job adverts or applying for a job.

Nope. Nah. Don't care today. and maybe not tomorrow. Work has fried my brain and stuffed me.

Clear skies - and i don't want to go out with my binoculars.

London burning and markets tanking - and people are surprised at this? Seriously are they that stupid and been living in a cave. or because there wasn't a "Job Loss & Foreclosure Court" reality show you didn't notice.

Is slashcode still sucky?

Security

Journal Journal: I hope no-one is relying on Indian Gov security 2

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/technology/technology-news/dont-hit-delete-that-hotmail-from-the-prime-minister-may-be-for-real-20110720-1hnuo.html "After a triple bombing in Mumbai killed 21 people last week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's office issued a statement condemning the terrorist attacks - from a Microsoft Hotmail address.

.

. Singh's staff's use of a free email account is typical of most government workers, who log into Hotmail, Google's Gmail and Yahoo's email to conduct official business. They also list those addresses on agency websites and business cards. Bureaucrats avoid the government system because it covers only 10 per cent of federal employees, doesn't include the latest security patches and can't be accessed via India's 840 million mobile-phone connections. " Security vs usability - guess what won.

Journal Journal: Open a betting pool? 3

How long until my phone rings offering me a job? Headhunted as opposed to me searching and applying. There might be a joke in here about barrel scraping.

2 days without accessing job feeds - 571 for immediate deletion (there is no way to stop them on the feed coming in but some filtering can be done once they are local). Hundreds that need to be looked at individually,

A few that haven't been bit bucketed tonight. I have 5 I sent to myself at work over the last week already that maybe I should apply for at least make some calls.

Not sure even a European implosion and US debt default is going to stop the Orient's thirst for resources - maybe even increase as they pump prime their economies.

Even the recruitment consultants are advertising for more people (bubble sign?).

I nominate 8 weeks.

http://blogs.reuters.com/the-deep-end/2011/06/14/no-room-at-the-inn-but-maybe-a-job-in-the-outback/
"During interviews for this story, questions about the exorbitant salaries of those in the mining and oil and gas industries prompted half-joking speculation that I might be considering a career change, as with this exchange with Mark Blayney, the owner of Carr Civil Contracting in Karratha:

Blayney: Do you want a job?

Reuters: Iâ(TM)m not an engineer.

Blayney: Doesnâ(TM)t matter.

Reuters: Oh, really, what could you offer me?

Blayney: Probably better than what youâ(TM)re making right now. ...
Blayney: Are you keen to learn? And youâ(TM)ve got the right attitude, weâ(TM)d start you off probably $100,000 minimum plus accommodation and flights and then just give you the experience and how far you go is up to you.
"

You also get free flies, dust and absence of amenity. But the pay is good.

The story she wrote:

"For long-distance commuters such as Perth-based Lucille Lievaux, their temporary mine accommodation is usually an air-conditioned shipping container with a single bed. But even regular visitors like her will create demand for more labor. "

Television

Journal Journal: I now own a monster cable 7

Had to buy a new tv this weekend.
The old one died - as expected, bought a CRT 4 or so years ago when big flat panels where way to expensive and it finally gave up.
Panasonic - 37", last years model - no DLNA. The sales dudes at all the stores were actually pretty helpful, it did pay to have done my homework. But this store was having the best sale on TVs as well actually having a 37" model, even if it was the show floor model and the last 37" they had.
I would have got a 42" model but it won't fit in the TV cabinet easily. Going shopping with a tape measure.
Decided all new AV gear was going to be Panasonic a while back. Well engineered and hopefully all compatible.

The last sales guy was really helpful answering all those questions that needed to be asked. I asked about HDMI cables to connect with and his eyes lit up. Tried to sell me on a Monster cable for $130 or more. Said no. Decided on a Phillps cable (still $60 - grrr)

Looked at home theatre systems (budgted for and had cash in my wallet for TV and sound system) - older model with big speakers (no DLNA) or newer model with tiny speakers. Gave up on the home theatre.

Haggled slightly (cash and all) - they must have had a directive to move Monster cables, coz he offered and I accepted to swap the Phillips cable for the Monster at the same price.

Only two problems remain - one can't be fixed. Harddisk TV thing now won't respond to commands when recording when HDMI cable is in - I think this might be fixable by playing with some options that have never previously been touched.
The other problem is the wife doesn't like 16:9 as a TV shape.

"At least 4800 Australian websites have been lost with no chance of recovery following a break-in at Australian domain registrar and web host Distribute.IT.
from link2:"Apparently there is the notice they released stuck to the door and says to look at Twitter for updates. Office is locked up with no one to be seen."
The hack attack caused so much damage that four of the company's servers were "unrecoverable", the company said, leaving thousands of website owners in the lurch.
"
Apparently the backups were online and they are gone to.
