GNU is Not Unix

Journal Journal: Java: A Verbose Acronym 9

Can you spot the error?

import some.imaginary.package.MyService;

public class MyServiceFactory {

    private static MyService instance;

    String factoryName;

    public MyServiceFactory(String factoryName) {
        this.factoryName = factoryName;
    }

    public Object getService() {
// create if null...
    synchronized(this) {
            if(MyServiceFactory.instance == null) {
            MyServiceFactory.instance = new MyService();
            }
    }
    return MyServiceFactory.instance;
    }

    public static void main(String args[]) {
        Thread a = new Thread() {
            public void run() {
                MyService service = new MyServiceFactory("a").getService();
        service.doStuff();
        }
    };

    Thread a = new Thread() {
            public void run() {
                MyService service = new MyServiceFactory("b").getService();
        service.doStuff();
            }
        };

    a.start();
    b.start();
    }
}

The error is not a syntax one, so if I'm missing a semi-colon or something, please assume that's unintentional.

The Courts

Journal Journal: Jolly Good Show 2

Well, it looks like the Brits stopped September 11th, Take Two. And, unlike certain recent busts here in the US where we arrested some stoner goofballs who were sitting around talking about stuff, this was the Real Deal

Whoa + Yay?

Thought #1: Team Bush is popping a huge boner over this and will somehow spin it that they and the Repubs were cornerstone in the "takedown" (Reality: They learned about it from cable news).

Thought #2: Shouldn't "Critical" be above "Severe?"

Journal Journal: My take on Ruby on Rails 3

It's a cult.

If Apple fans are Mormons, then the Ruby on Rails community is that Hippie commune farm on the outskirts of town. Your daughter goes there with some friends to hang out and before you know it she's changed her name to "Sunshine," always has a creepy smile on her face and tells you how happy she is with her new "family." And she says she feels sorry for you.

I found a promising article on The Server Side: Hibernate vs Rails: The Persistence Showdown. It has a comments section! Gavin King et. al. vs. the Rails fanatics. I'm giddy just thinking about the flame-wars possibilities.

It's funny.  Laugh.

Journal Journal: Debunking 9/11 Myths 7

I had already heard about some 9/11 "Truth" movements - the first being that French tract The Big Lie. But in the last few weeks I've had several people mention that "Loose Change" movie, so I decided it was worth a JE.

Here it is:

The people behind the "Loose Change" video and other "9/11 Truth" groups are a few notches below Holocaust Deniers, in my opinion. For all their conspiracies to be true and all the FACTS to be wrong would require the complicity of hundreds - if not thousands. It's just not sustainable.

Popular Mechanics: 9/11: Debunking The Myths

Salon.com: The 9/11 Deniers

Loose Change 2nd Edition Viewer Guide

The only difference between them and the Holocaust Deniers is that of scale, really.

Blah blah posting a Liberty-related quote on July 4th is corny as all hell.

HEY BABY FIRE UP THAT BARBEQUE LET'S GET SOME STEAKS ON THAT FUCKER!!!

The Internet

Journal Journal: Digg is overrated 3

Common digg comment:

"ur st00pid that link is not kewl i like that other link better then the 1 u showed me the other day"

Other common digg comment:

"Who is the n00b that wrote this article? Here's some advice: stop being a n00b."

Finally, almost all their headlines read like spam:

"Microsoft will be LATE with Visa!"

"L@@K - new Nintendo Wii PICS"

"Download 1000 games FOR FREE"

Nope - the death of /. has been greatly exagerated. Long live Taco!
