Submission + - A Modest Proposal, re: Beta vs. Classic 19

unitron writes: Dice wants to make money off of what they paid for--the Slashdot name--, or rather they want to make more money off of it than they are making now, and they think the best way to do that is to turn it into SlashingtonPost.

They should take this site and give it a new name. Or get Malda to let them use "Chips & Dips".

Leave everything else intact, archives, user ID database, everything except the name.

Then use the Beta code and start a new site and give it the slashdot.org name, and they can have what they want without the embarrassment of having the current userbase escape from the basement or the attic and offend the sensibilities of the yuppies or hipsters or metrosexuals or whoever it is that they really want for an "audience".

So I tried loading this story on beta.slashdot.org, and this is what I got in the comments section, instead of comments:

Shazbot! We ran into some trouble getting the comments.
Try again... na-nu, na-nu!

Um WHAT THE FUCK?! Is that English or *BABY*?! See? That's just way too immature for me. What are you developers? 5 years old?

I am very glad I turned down the Senior Slashdot Dev position offer in 2009.

I've said it MANY times. IF the current beta comment UI and main page goes live and I am forced to jump through hoops to get out of it, the likelihood I will visit Slashdot again goes to 50/50% (I've been a daily reader / commenter for FIFTEEN YEARS NOW!)

IF this current UI is discarded, I can GUARAN-FUCKING-TEE you that I will NEVER visit beta.slashdot.org in its current ugliness. It is a User Interface DISASTER! Just look at the frickin comment boxes, how much wasted space, non-thick feminine fonts that are hard to see, etc.

Thanks to your warning, I have been able to mourn Slashdot's inevitable demise since the first beta.slashdot post many months ago. I have been on slashdot literally my entire adult life. I WILL mourn it.

But I will NOT EVEN VISIT beta.slashdot until the UI is substantially redone in a more masculine, clean cut way, like the current slashdot.org.

mugnyte writes: With Slashdot's recent restyled "BETA" slowly rolled to most users, there's been a lot of griping about the changes. This is nothing new, as past style changes have had similar effects. However, this pass there are significant usability changes: A narrower read pane, limited moderation filtering, and several color/size/font adjustments. BETA implies not yet complete, so taking that cue — please list your specific, detailed opinoins, one per comment, and let's use the best part of slashdot (the moderation system) to raise the attention to these. Change can be jarring, but let's focus on the true usability differences with the new style.

Hmm. I'm neither liberal nor conservative, and I do not see the evidence for Anthropogenic Global Warming (tho it does seem as though the Solar system is warming), however, I also see tons of evidence that genetically modified foods are deletrious to the biosphere, human health, etc.

What does that make me?

Please, please consider buying it from us, so that we may fund additional security improvements for you in the future. It can only make your users safer!"

They possibly even believed it.

Man, Texas ain't half that bad!

I work in Houston, make ~$100,000, don't pay any state income taxes, have a 7% sales tax rate in my city, and a $800 two bedroom apartment 15 minutes from work. I doubt I could have all that in very many other states.

Oh, and we have sun like 230 days a year (compared to Seattle's ~100), and it's never really cold (it snows maybe once every 7 years).

Really? /. still doesn't have UTF-8 support? That was a € sign. Are you fucking kidding me?

It's their fucking database. Their website is in the UTF-8 charset, but their database's character set is apparently ISO-8859-1 which doesn't even have the € symbol. Their front-end attempts to compensate by converting everything it can into HTML special chars, like & euro (e.g., €uro vs. €uro).

The devs should be shot.
