PS3 Pre-Orders Came and Went 230

Warlock7 writes "Well, it's official. The pre-orders have begun ... and mostly ended. I just got mine ordered and four hours later there are already units on eBay. Some acutions have already gone north of $1000 USD. The guys at EBGames told me that the most units going to any one store was 36 and that there were an average of 8 units being distributed to each store. The one I went to reported that they were going to be getting a total of 16 units. They waited this long to take pre-orders because they wanted to be sure that they weren't going to get burned like they did for the XBox 360 launch." The reports from across the internets are varied, with long lines netting nothing for some, and others reaping the sweet rewards.

    I have a better idea. I'll wait to get one (if I bother at all) and then when I do all the bugs will have worked out, there will be more games available, it will cost less I won't have to wait in any ureasonably long lines and I won't have helped fuel Sony's ridiculous hype machine.

    How many consoles have we gone through that had problems on release? Everything from the DS Lite cracking, to the xbox controllers being the size of a small gorilla, to the xbox360 over heating, to faulting dvd roms of the ps2. Its almost at the point where its guaranteed to have a flaw in it. And i feel worse for people who buy it on ebay at an extra $500/pop.

    And with all these horrid rumors of design flaws with the ps3, its more of a reason to just wait it out. Same with the Wii. I refuse to believe that 6 months down the line, they are going to come up with a much more accurate wiimote than the have now.

    Allow me to express some mild scepticism, but I predict shortages and many unfulfilled pre-orders.

    Personally, I have only ever had a single problem with a Nintendo made product and that was I got a disc-read error on my launch Gamecube about 8 months after I bought it. My dealings with Nintendo's customer service about my broken Gamecube were so good that I have no worries about buying a Wii at launch; essentially, Nintendo just told me where to drop off the Gamecube and they shipped a refurbished Gamecube overnight to their Depot so I only had 1 day without my gamecube.

    The PS3, on the other hand, I would be worried about mainly because I have had bad experiences with Sony's customer service in the past and the PS3 has a first generation optical disc drive in it; my memories of first generation CD-RW and DVD/DVD-RW drives tells me that the most you can really expect from a drive like this is (about) 12 months of usage. I never want to have another system (like my PS2) where I own it for 13 months and have to go buy a brand new system (at full price) because of a disc-read error.

    reaping the sweet rewards.
    Wait, so, standing in line in order to get something that you're just going to resell to get more money while the person behind you wants to buy the same item for her kids for Christmas, and then realizes her checkbook was empty and has to leave, is a reward?

    I guess on the bright side, it saved her lots of cash to buy other (hopefully less expensive) things for her kids.

    I second the emotion on the subject of the original US Xbox controller. I have gigantic hands and the little controller is poop, it fatigues my hands to use it because I have to manipulate it with my fingertips, or else set it on my lap and poke at it with tweezers. I'm glad Microsoft brought out the smaller controller to shut up all the tiny-handed people out there, but I'm sad that they discontinued the old one... but then again, I'm glad that most people like the smaller controller better, because it means you can always find supplies of the original controllers used. Today, I have two large and three small pads (always have a spare!) and I use the small ones only for occasional emulated games that work better with a smaller controller due to some idiotic control scheme - and there are many like this.

    If I were looking for early-adopter flaws, I'd select some that have actually been fixed. Even slimline PS2s suffer more drive failures than any other optical-drive console I've ever used.
    Well, yeah, but if you didn't leave it on the rug where your cat sleeps, it would probably last a bit longer.

    Actually, I'm allergic to cats, and I have stands that hold all my equipment. The PS2 is on top of the switchbox is on top of the Xbox, all in a cubby in my TV stand; All my stereo equipment is in one of the usual stands for that purpose in another corner of the room.

    The simple fact is that Sony makes the least reliable game consoles with optical drives in them, period. Sony has seldom been able to make a reliable optical drive. I have a car discman that has fared quite well in the face of abuse, which is an absolute requirement for any portable hardware, but I've lost a PS1 and a PSOne, and seen countless PS2s fail.

    In fact, Gran Turismo 4 is notorious for killing the optical drive in the original (thick) PS2. It's a Sony game in a Sony system! Only the best. Personally I think it was intentional.

    Doh. So, Microsoft creating a platform that lurves rootkits is OK. So, Microsoft shipping win2k with 65000 known issues is OK. So, Microsoft screwing the play anywhere (or whatever they called it) customers with zune is OK. So, Microsoft screwing with the customer by being a monopolist is OK (and still continues to do so).

    I mean, WTF? Why is it OK for Microsoft to do that and more (Bill Gates perjury in the fscking court during the monopoly trial, anyone?!? Alchin's perjury?!).

    WTF is wrong with blueray? So, HDVD is better?! The fact that almost no one supported HDVD until _AFTER_ Microsoft threw their weight behind it doesn't make you unhappy?

    Whatever. I can't believe people are missing the forest for the damned trees.

    And? Electrical contacts get dirty, what's your point?

    More telling, in my opinion, is the number of original (>20 year old) NES machines that can still be made to work perfectly with just this trick. Your PS1 still work? How about your friends'? Hell, how many people do you know that have had to replace a faulty PS2?

    Granted the NES design could have been better (by "better" I mean a top loading cartridge, like the SNES and the famicom in Japan). However, the NES was designed that way in order to get it into stores in the USA. They couldn't build it correctly, or stores wouldn't have carried it. In reality the solution that they came up with didn't compromise the system too badly (see point about original NES's still working), and the system survived that flaw to become an enormous commercial success.

    eBay has a fairly clear policy [ebay.com] regarding pre-sale auctions...I'd imagine any PS3 listing that get pulled probably don't satisfy their requirements.

    From the eBay rules site:
    Pre-sale listings are those that describe items for sale that are not in the control or possession of the seller at the time of the listing. These listings generally consist of items that are sold in advance of a delivery date to the public.

    eBay permits Pre-sale listings only on a limited basis. The seller must guarantee that the item will be available for shipping within 30 days from the date of purchase (i.e., the day the listing ends or the date the item is purchased from a store front listing). The seller must also clearly indicate within the listing the fact that the item is a pre-sale item with a delivery date that indicates the item will be shipped by the 30th day from the end date of the listing. Additionally, this text must be no less than the default font size of the eBay Sell-Your-Item form. Currently, the default font size is HTML font size 3.

    Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

    * Listing cancellation
    * Limits on account privileges
    * Account suspension
    * Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings
    * Loss of PowerSeller status

    I'm OSX-only. I'm a gamer.

    No, not Photoshop or Super Breakout, either.

    That said, I agree, the bitching is old. Especially "ZOMG PROPRIETARY BLOO-RAY!!!". As another poster said about an entirely different format, "proprietary" is not just a word for formats you don't like.

    Turns out it's not so much dust as electrical contacts losing their spring [classicgaming.com].

    That actually sounds really original and fun - so long as pacing etc is right anyway. I don't think you'd talk Nintendo into it but maybe you could do a UT mod prototype or something.

    Excellent Sony games: Ico, God of War, Gran Turismo (Polyphony Digital is owned by Sony). Sony's first party output is probably better than Microsoft's, though Nintendo is of course the first party king.

    Anyone who buys a launch console is screwed, full stop. The difference is how hard...

An Ada exception is when a routine gets in trouble and says 'Beam me up, Scotty'.

Working...
