It seems to be back with a vengeance. Of course, I knew better than to click on it. I was really concerned that they already had my computer; but apparently they didn't.

You can't "view source" on their code, because it changes windows too fast. Ethereal, and its "follow stream" feature solve that problem. I was able to examine the code. I didn't really delve into it; but it looks like they've found some weaknesses in the scripts that allow you to somehow fake out the pop-up blocker.

Viewing the source allowed me to see the site they pull the JS from, and I simply redirect it to localhost now. That's a short-term fix of course. They really need to close the loophole that this code exploits.

The insight comes from a cellular automata study published this month in the journal Physical Review E. In effect, people who disregard the rules help to break up the groups that form as rule-followers clump together. The risk of jamming is lower if all people obey the rules than if they all disobey them, according to the analysis, but jamming risk is lowest when about 40 percent of people drive like jerks."

The Nation has up a sobering article from its upcoming issue about how colleges and universities are being turned into homeland security campuses, in the name of preventing homegrown radicalization. Quoting: "From Harvard to UCLA, the ivory tower is fast becoming the latest watchtower in Fortress America. The terror warriors, having turned their attention to "violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism prevention' — as it was recently dubbed in a House of Representatives bill of the same name — have set out to reconquer that traditional hotbed of radicalization, the university."

White House Tape Recycling Possibly Erased Emails 251

Pojut points us to a Washington Post story which details the White House's admission that it routinely recycled backup tapes from 2001 to 2003, possibly destroying e-mail records from that time period. While the tapes are being analyzed to determine if any of the data can be recovered, the White House also indicated that some e-mail through 2005 may not have been preserved. We discussed the beginnings of this investigation a few months ago. From the Post: "During the period in question, the Bush presidency faced some of its biggest controversies, including the Iraq war, the leak of former CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson's name and the CIA's destruction of interrogation videotapes. White House spokesman Tony Fratto said he has no reason to believe any e-mails were deliberately destroyed."
