Public schools in America are being destroyed because so many parents want their children to learn that science is just a bunch of fiction you use to pass a test.
The "reality" for those kids is whatever MY holy book says!

First off, not sure of the value of tests - they're not very good at testing understanding - but even if we ignore that, then yes belief systems (I hesitate t call it a religion, as that implies following what you believe, whereas most parents merely require that the teachers and schools do that for them) are a serious problem.

BTW, Milton Friedman, a few months before his death, admitted he had been trying since the 1950s to eliminate all government funded schools. I think he had a large part in the trashing of public education.

Shades of the Scopes Monkey Trial. Obviously an insane piece of legislation. There is NOTHING that any teacher can teach that will not contradict the religious beliefs of some student. (In relation to this topic I encountered some information about the Flat Earthers. But it seems the modern Flat Earthers use fewer religious arguments these days?)
However, in terms of blame, my candidate for #1 culprit would be super-hypocrite William Bennett, who was quite aggressive in attacking public schools as Secretary

The reason why I think Milton Friedman, the most influential economist of the 20th century, was trying to abolish public education is because he admitted it: “the ideal way [to give parents control of their children’s education] would be to abolish the public school system and eliminate all the taxes that pay for it.”

Not quite sure of your point or how it relates to my original piece, but my response here is that Bennett was in the right place to do the damage, whereas Friedman was doing other kinds of foolish stuff. However and considering that I haven't researched the point, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bennett used Friedman's ideas whenever he found them helpful to increase the damage to public education.
