Journal Journal: Redundancy!

Today, the 23rd of Sept 2003 I have been made redundant! :-D

the handshake was very much golden in colour and the timing is perfect..
I'll leave the site i work at on the 28th of Nov, as they need me to hang around long enough to help them with their changes and swapovers..

I'm stoked.. its all happening better than I could have planned myself..
They being very nice about it, and even the MGM (Mine General Manager) has said that I may use him as referance and he is going to fwd my name and details to one of his mates that works at Tenex ( I think thats it), a rather large company that does defence work for the Gov!

Life is looking about as good as It can get.. :-D I might go buy a lotto ticket! ;-)

Journal Journal: crap..

Got smashed by the flu on monday night.. through till wed night.. was fast and furious.. I seem to be over the flu now but I'm still getting headspins etc etc from what I guess is dehydration etc.

My counterpart (JWC ;-) at the other big site made a god almight fuckup and has wrecked his network.. 24 hours later and its still down.. no work done at all because his PDC, BDC and main file servers are RS (rat shit ;-).

I've helped them out a little with a few bits and pieces, but ultimately my site needs me more, besides our sorta "boss" and "spiritual leader" is over there working hard to fix it up.. they don't need too many of "me" type people there.. we'll just get under each others feet.

I can't believe what they've told me..
The guy had some unknown issue, didn't ring any of the other staff and decided to re-install win2k server over the top of the PDC.
Realized that that wasn't working so grabbed a backup copy of the system directory and restored THAT over the top of the re-install. Big problem there is that :
A) that backup was 5 months old!! (his backups haven't been reliable..)
B) the restored version was an older service pack version than what he had on the server!

What a bloody nightmare.

I should think that, that will be the nail in his coffin.. the old guy will have to go back to shearing sheep.

Journal Journal: Big changes

This whole company restructure thing sucks.
Its got moral at an all time low.. no not my moral.. everyone elses.
I would be happy if they made me redundant, as I'd get to shift to Perth on a decent cash package..

We're planning an IP address range swap over in less than a week.. I've started the planning but the deaper I go the more complex its going to be.
scary stuff.. but we've (The boss and myself) decided that my site should go first, as I've made it the most robust and have the best underlying structure.

wonderfull.. work hard.. get punished first :-P

I'm reading a Trilogy by "Garth Nix" at the moment.. its not too bad.. way better than Trudy Carnavan but still kinda childish.

This Gentoo server setup is causing me some lost time.. first I wasted heaps of time trying to figure out what was wrong with my install and it turned out to be a stuffed CDrom.. then I used the new GRP3 and Genkernel configuration.. I think that process has some flaws in it.. I might even contribute to the buglist.

This time I think I'm just being lazy.. (also prozilla appreas b0rked).
I'll get it done though..

*yawn* I have a meet tomorrow.. so I'd better head off to bed.. not rest for the gleefully wicked ;-)

Journal Journal: Seeya Andrew

Andrew was finally "Let Go" last night.
I have to say I'm relieved that its all over, he was a liability, but now he's finished and moved on I feel less inclinded to be guarded with him.. and might even stay in contact with him..

I think though that if he wanted re-course, then the company has left itself way open for legal counter action.. *shrug* not my problem.

Chris learnt a valueble lesson last night.. and that is to "pay attention to what I tell him".. *grin* I thought to give him some experiance in bringing the server farm back to life after a complete shutdown.. and I told him "In this room you need patience, you can't afford to be in a hurry here".
It went in one ear and out the other..

The Gentoo server is causing me a few headaches.. but I'm making progress...

Good news, Tax return should be just under 2k :-D so I'm going to throw the idea of fixing the auto transmission out the window and just do a manual conversion.

The 180sx will be a little more fun to drive now *Worried Grin*

Journal Journal: Upgrade going well

Well.. Its taken a while but all in all.. the hard parts are done.. and now I'm formatting the 169 gig of diskspace we have :-)

Its taking a VERY long time (10 mins for 2%) so I could be here till very late.. :-/

It went so well I think I might try and upgrade the bios on the contoller card of our PDC (yeah its a NT4 domain), as the raid array on that is fucking slow..

Went and has drinks for Cameron's farewell last night.. I'm gonna miss that guy.. he's a "unique individual".. I get along with his SO too.. and she's pretty cool.. hell.. in another life time I probably would chased her around :-P

Chris is coming along really well.. I'm going to lose my job to him some day.. he learns pretty fast and learns well.
I hope he's the admin of this site after me.. I'd be chuffed to have someone I taught, take the reins :-D
Geez I sound old.. :-P

I'm going to build my old desktop (Athlon 1.2 gig 512mb etc etc) as my gateway/router/webserver/game server tonight ( I hope ), And because I feel pretty confident with Gentoo and I really need to ramp up my Linux learning curve I'm going to make it a Gentoo server.

I shouldn't have too much trouble doing that.. though I'm a bit unsure about IP tables ( I learnt on IP chains ), but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Journal Journal: BRILLIANT!

Last night.. I installed my old soundblast LIVE Value! card.. and compiled it into the kernel.
Its damned near perfect.. No crappy sound.. the game ET runs heaps smoother (and I don't have to type "artsdsp -m et" to run it.. ), its amazing the difference that having hardware supported with hardware mixing, makes to the overall performance of the machine.

I can't express how happy i am with the performance of the sblive.. and how really peeved I am with Nvidia and their piss poor excuse for a linux driver for the nforce2 sound chipset.

Tis the season for sackings atm.. Seems like they're culling back the numbers of staff within the company around the kalgoorlie region. I'm not worry.. in fact I'm kinda hopefull.. I'd love to be made redundant.. cause I'd move to Perth in a flash.

Big upgrade commin up.. I had to go home and download an .ISO image from IBM on my home connection.. cause it was over 500mb and works bandwidth is choked up.. Its sad that I have to use my own resources to get stuff for the company.. cause the company doesn't have those resources.

Oh well.. its not a big cost to me..

Going to install Gentoo on the 233 thinkpad I have at home.. should be fun, I estimate it'll take about 48 hours just for the first compile :-P

I won't bother with KDE.. but I'll try for fluxbox.. and that alone would be another 12-24 hours I reckon..

lotsa fun.. _

Journal Journal: Sound support in Linux

Found an interesting article that says that the Ensoniq Audio PCI card has VERY good (if not kinda limited) support in Linux.. The soundBlaster live is a close second.. I'm only after basic stereo (but RELIABLE stereo), so I think that I might try and locate one of these.. good thing they're dirt cheap :-)

Journal Journal: IQ

I had an interesting experiance with an online IQ testing site..
( this one : )
I did the "Culture fair IQ Test" and got 123..
The test was timed.. and I know that the score also runs off how long it took to answer each question.. I was doing it in a linux enviroment where several times I had to click two or three times because the Linux GUI enviroment isn't quite as forgiving as a windows one.. plus I was distracted by my SO twice.. so in theory.. I could have scored higher than "Significantly above average."

Kinda interesting thought... but then.. I feel the value of these tests are somewhat over stated..

Getting prepped for the big upgrade.. I'm pretty damned sure that I'll do this without much of a hitch.. but you know how it is, High end user usage mail server, the only one we have doing a 3 disk raid swap to 6 disk raid, I'd guess about a 12 hour down time. I always worry and question my self ability during medium to big risk jobs like this..
Rebuilt the MGM's Pc the other night.. will be returning back there in a few nights to finish the job (ie install cd audio cable and setup ICS on his home wireless netowrk..) I did a damn nice job on his home PC, cable tied everything out of the way.. very neat and tidy, it helped that it was a nice case to work on.. must buy an Aopen case for Rea when she wants her upgrade.

hmm.. better get back to it.... :-/

Journal Journal: More Gentoo :-)

I've spent some BULK time on Gentoo, its chat channel and its forum..
I've learnt more in the last 3 weeks about linux because of Gentoo than I have in the last 5 years using RH and Mandrake.. :-/

Its still not perfect.. I had a perfect system running a kernel on the "gentoo-sources" EXCEPT that it kept locking up randomly.. so i took someone elses advice and built it on the gaming sources (CK kernel), at the same time I also set my ram settings in the bios back to "optimal speed" from "aggressive speed" ( I know, I know.. two changes at once.. BAD /me :-P ).
Its stable now but I can't get the nvaudio module to run on the gaming sources and ALSA just plain sucks arse.. too much CPU overhead and it doesn't handle very noisy enviroments (ie when in a game there is a lot of expolsions/gun fire etc).

So now I'm tempted to go back to the gentoo-sources and see if it was the ram settings that fixed my issue's.. I guess I can test that tonight by changing the settings back and seeing if my new kernel crashes again...

Bulk work going on at the moment.. very busy.. so I'll leave with my latest hairbrained idea..

'm in a strange mood this morning.. and one of those strange thoughts I had was how Kiss's song "I was made for loving you baby" would make a really cool song, if it was re-written (weird Al style) for Lord of the Rings...

Kiss - I Was Made For Ruling You

Tonight I wanna give it all to you
In the darkness
There?s so much I wanna do
And tonight I wanna lay them at your feet
?Cause Frodo, I was made for you
And you were made for me

I was made for ruling you minions
You were made for wearing me
And I can?t get enough of you minions
Can you get some more for me

Tonight I wanna see it in your eyes
Feel the magic
There?s something that drives me wild
And tonight we nna make it all come true
?Cause Frodo, you were made for me
And Frodo, I was made to rule

I was made for ruling you minions
You were made for wearing me
And I can?t get enough of you minions
Can you get some more for me

I was made for ruling you minions
You were made for wearing me
And I can give it all to you Frodo
Can you get some more for me

Oh, can?t get enough, oh, oh
I can?t get enough, oh, oh
I can?t get enough

I was made for ruling you minions
You were made for wearing me
And I can?t get enough of you minions
Can you get some more for me

Mwahahahahahaha :-)

I should get back to work.. :-/

[edit] well.. it looks so far like the RAM speed increase WASN'T the reason for the lockups.. and it really was gentoo-sources.. This makes me sad.. cause I wanted to go back to gentoo-sources so i could use the nvaudio module and have decent sound again. :-(

Journal Journal: GENTOO!!! :-)

Ha.. Just notice that someone commented in my journal.. it was a fair cop.. but because he posted as an Anonymous Coward I wont bother dignifying it with a reply..

Well, last night the 22nd of Jul, I managed to successfully compile and run Gentoo 1.4 rc5 on my home machine.. Its fscking sweet :-D
I had some major help from a guy in the US called Lateef, nice guy.. very helpful and instrumental to me being successful with Gentoo.
I plan on sending him something "Aussie" to thank him.. He's a Muslim I think so unfortunately Vegemite won't be allowed. (I'll ask him just in case).
As I was saying.. Gentoo is very cool.. I'm glad I chose it over RH or Lycoris.. as It makes a lot more sense and is easier to troubleshoot than RH.. plus it doesn't have loads of bloat.. only what I ask for.. :-)

Rea and myself have decided we want our bed back.. so we bought a dog bed for Java and Gimli so they can sleep in that.. we haven't been getting much sleep lately because the bloody bastards keep waking us up at around 3 am wanting to climb in with us.. probably because its cold..
We bought them hot water bottles but they get cold after a few hours.. so were looking around for an electric blanket small enough to put in their bed..

Suzie is back.. and getting better.. its a bit of a shock that she had a minor stroke.. ah well.. at least it served a lesson to me.. now I'm playing volleyball 3-4 times a week, and badminton once a week at the moment.. but I want more practice.. so I'm going to have to find another court to play on.

I'm so tired from the dogs and all the time spent on Gentoo.. but all I can think of is going home and playing with it more.. *sigh* *yawn* :-P

I'm getting behind again at work so time to log off and catch up..

Journal Journal: Praises.. 1

Was informed yesterday that the top of the food chain for this mine site (and indeed the Australian region), seems to think I'm an under utilized and very clever individual..
It's nice to be recognized :-P

The main Guts of my new home machine will be here tomorrow arvo *wibble* :-P The rest (case etc) should be here tomorrow or Friday at the latest :-D

I will definitely be running Redhat 9.* on it, I'm just not sure if I'll dual boot it with XP or 2k.. Decisions decision.. :-/

Budget time today.. I'll be budgeting for various upgrades to the infrastructure this time.. as PC and desktop machines are pretty well off for the next 12 months.. its mostly our server farm (disk space) and printing (plotters) that's causing us pain right now..

I'm still snickering at Gimli's behavior last night.. damn Chihuahua's have a heap of personality.

A thought occurred last night.. Does anyone read these journals? if they do, do I care. If I do care then why do I use it? I'm sure I could find a more private method to keep an on-line journal..
I think I need to analyze this a bit more, it poses some interesting possibilities..

Journal Journal: Betrayal! :-[

Got screwed over by my manager today, all because he couldn't keep his mouth shut.
Well. lesson learnt.. I'll not be fwding info through to him again, and he loses out on a very well informed Sys Admin.

I'm a bit pissed with IBM and their Laptop range these days.. I'm trying to keep a standard of "A" series laptops out here and the bastards look like they're going to drop the A seires thinkpad and the closest thing I can get is G series except that that model thinkpad wont plug into a docking station. x-[

Had an interesting chat with one of the IT staff in Vancouver today (via sametime), this person makes the Corp It manager sound like a total wanker..
Wouldn't surprise me.. but seeing as I haven't met him yet.. I'll reserve my judgement (as important as it is :-P ).

I'm hanging out for my new PC thats on its way atm.. Should be here at the end of the week..

I'll look into it along with the myrid of other shit I have to do.. *sigh* never enough hours in the day is there?

A friend of mine just told me that one of her friends 18mnth old baby died by drowning in a nappy bucket :-(
I'm not normally effected by these sorts of stories.. but this strikes me as a very sad event.

Journal Journal: Erk..

Had a scary insight into my subconscious last night..
I had a recurring dream.. and every time I woke up, and went back to sleep it would start again..
It wasn't a pretty dream either.. its was bloody, and violent and involved alot of pain... on my behalf..

I can't think of any outside (real world) influence that might have planted the seed for this dream.. so it came from me alone. It wasn't pleasant, and involved having all my soft bits "nail gunned" and "steel pinned" to a wooden door.. not pleasant at all.

Nuff said on that *shudder*.

I've been playing around with the nullsoft "WASTE" program.. just seeing what it can do on my home network.. Its a bit untidy, and clumsy (opens waaaay too many windows up) but all in all is a nice idea.. I can't wait to see an official fork of it on the net..

been getting a lot of material for my "Chronicles of J" collection.. some very funny/sad stuff there.. one day it might even be as famous as the BOFH or the "George collection"..

Getting excited about my new desktop.. I'm building the specs for it this week.. *drool* (I know, Lame isn't it)

I LOVE the new Kyocera Photocopier/printer/scanner setups we have.. I'm getting more and more use out of them every day.. and they're restoring my faith in printer tech slowly, day by day..
I'm trying to get our AS400 to print and staple to the things over the network right now.. is a difficult but not impossible challenge.. JUST THE WAY I LIKE THEM :-)

I'm getting a good laugh out of the whole SCO/IBM/Linux thing at the moment.. The quote from Linus Trovalds was just golden :
"As for what he thinks of SCO's actions, Torvalds in an e-mail interview compared the fight between SCO, IBM and Novell Inc. to bad TV. "Quite frankly, I found it mostly interesting in a Jerry Springer kind of way. White trash battling it out in public, throwing chairs at each other. SCO crying about IBM's other women. ... Fairly entertaining," said Torvalds. "

Bloody excellent :-)

On the subject of good quotes.. here is one that would make a great sig :
"Imagine a school with children that can read and write, but with teachers who cannot, and you have a metaphor of the Information Age in which we live." - Peter Cochrane

Ok, enough for today.. I have inspiration now..

User Journal

Journal Journal: Why didn't I think of that??

Had someone mention in conversation the idea of a scratch drive.
Why haven't I thought of this idea? Its bloody great!
We have a "Temp share" drive on the netwrok at the moment, and I'm constantly having to try and clean it out as its full of crap, some of it 4-5 years old!!
I'm going to try and clean out the drive later and then set ip up as a "scratch drive" so it looks after itself. :-) sheer brilliance..

I really need to talk tech to more IT Admins.. I don't get to do much of that in this company.. the others are..... less ambitious.. and don't care about better philosophies or smarter methods.. most of them treat it like a brickies labour job.
Its sad, I REALLY enjoy building a smooth system / network with a large user base and having the chance to see them use it and make it nearly transparent as to how it all works.
But these guys actually trudge into work every day and do the barest miminum they can get by day by day.
Very depressing.
I'm starting to make progress on the "5 year plan" so I'd better go back.. its actually almost fun ;-)
User Journal

Journal Journal: Carry on thoughts..

Ok.. so I have the flu.
I got to the shops like most other people and buy some cold and flu tablets.
Now these things are great.. the treat the symptoms and make you almost as if you didn't have the flu, BUT THEY DO NOT CURE IT.
So, I guess, in theory I'm now wandering around not being carefull of who I talk to or shake hands with because of the "out of site out of mind" effect.. and in the process passing my flu on to twice / thrice as many people as I would have had I just stayed at home and suffered through it.

If I was really paranoid I'd say that this would also contribute to how the flu's seem to be getting stronger and more resiliant to our methods of combating them..

I can't see a flaw in this thought.. Pity no one reads these journal things.. I'd love to discuss this further with people..

While I'm at it, why do I keep adding .. to the end of my sentances?
hmmm better get back to work..
