Journal johndiii's Journal: How many journal entries? 34

Em mentiond here that he has written quite a few journal entries. I wondered how many I have written; the total turns out to be 650 (not including this one). Starting with What JonKatz is up to these days..., down to last night's poem.

The easiest way to count is probably to go to your journal list, copy the entries, paste into a text editor, and look at the line count.

So... How many journal entries have you written? And, to make it a little more interesting, what was your first one? How about your favorite one?

How many journal entries?

Comments Filter:
  • Favorites? Dunno. The ones I can go back and read and enjoy (not all). So usually the longer ones. I like some of my titles. "Lambourghini Doors + Escalade" explaining Americans' misconceptions of Japanese attitudes during WWII. I like The sielwolf Post-modern Reader [slashdot.org]. I think that might explain to people what they get.

If I was really looking to be depressed I'd find out the average length of my JE's (which are usually handwritten and not CTRL+C-CTRL+V). *gah!*
  • Approximate counts as I may have accidentally skipped stuff whilst scrolling (couldn't find a way to cut and past to the shell from Firefox without extraneous HTML crap)

    As eno2001: 328
    As Trolling4Dollars: 124
  • holy crap. 570 journal entries. yikes. but that spans almost 4 years. so an average of say 140 a year, that's about 11 or so a month, which actually gells with what i do, every couple of days (on average).

but still! 570. couple that with my 4326 (including this) comments, and that is a fuck of a lot of time spent on this ridiculous site.
  • Apparently I've written 110 of them over the last couple years.

Quite a few more than I expected to have.

The first one being a rant about nothing particularly important.

A large bulk of them were written during my last year of employement at my previous job.

I was a pretty angry guy for that year apparently, its a wonder I didn't end up having a heart attack with all that anger. :)

  • First one was about the looming invasion of Iraq.

The first person to respond to any of my JE's was Em :-D

  • 980!! Starting waaay back in Oct, 2001 [slashdot.org]... probably right when the journal system came online.

    Picking a fav is tough...
There's the one where I suggest using JE's for rejected articles [slashdot.org] (TL followed me on that one)
First mention of my pregnant wife [slashdot.org] (pregnant with Joey)
The one where I mention Cliff unexpectedly emailed me and supported me on a fight in an article [slashdot.org]

But the fav has to go with the JE where michael unexpectedly showed up to insult me [slashdot.org] based on the number of comments I've made. And now I've ma
    • man, i forgot just how stupid michael really was, and how completely hypocritical, two-faced and pathetic everything he had to say really was. how i could forget that is beyond me, because his stupidity reached new heights with every utterance from his tiny little brain... but still. sheesh.

thanks for the trip down the weird-memory lane :)
  • Over the course of 4 years, that's a lot less than I would have thought.

My favorite journal entry is actually a series, The Crazy from the Land where Science shall not be Spoken:

    Part 1 [slashdot.org]
    Part 2 [slashdot.org]
    Part 3 [slashdot.org]
    Part 4 [slashdot.org]
    Part 5 [slashdot.org]

Oh hey, the note she left [umn.edu] is still available for your viewing pleasure.
    • Those are my favorite too...

      • I get so much pleasure out of looking at that note! Is that wrong? I mean, it's a not a sit alone in your room making really, really loud noises pleasure...my feelings about the note are purely platonic. It puts me in a good mood for hours.
    • ...I just spent the last hour reading those and their commentary.

That's some comedy gold right there, some of the best if not the best JEs I've ever read.
      • I am so glad that I had that experience. Everybody has their 'story'- that incident they can ramble about over drinks to a completely dumbstruck audience. This is mine.
    • You know that "blonde" joke[1], about the one whose punch line goes something like, "But I can't be out of money-- I still have CHECKS left!"? When I was in college, I actually knew a woman (sadly, a blonde) who honestly thought that. Bounced checks left and right. It's truly amazing that she didn't get arrested.

[1] Before anyone gets all uptight with me about blonde jokes, I understand the difference between stereotypical behavior and reality. The best blonde jokes I've ever heard were told to me by a

But I read way too many (sometimes taking the first hour or two at work).

1691 Comments, but I lost a great bunch of those a long whiles back.

Then again, on asec (my car board), I'm just shy of 20,000 comments, and I moderate the computer portion and 'discussion' aspect of that board. I'm also trying to get two other boards off the ground. Sheesh, too much work ;)
  • I think I counted 72 JE since last July. But on another site I have 2316, spannin 5.5 years, meaning I write an average of 421 entries a year which seems excessive.
  • And my favorite was probably this one [slashdot.org].

  • 1341.

    That's a couple. Started monday, July 1st, 2002.

    We've come along way. ;)

    • I started 6 days before you. I think that makes me cool! Or dumb! Or something.
      • Just for today, I'll go with "cool".

Or something implies way too much.

Funny how different things were back then.

I found the discussions to be more interesting and fun. Maybe it's just me.

      Argh! AD&D / Older rules!

Yes this is completely off topic. :)
  • My first was in '02 and it was meant to be a philosophical series. Too bad it sucked...

As for my favorite, I've never thought about it before and I don't know that I have one. I'll have to think...

  • by turg ( 19864 ) *
    (yes, exactly)

The first one was the following "Thought for the day"
The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

My favourite? Hm. I don't tend to take my JE's very seriously, so I don't see any that I feel particularly attached to.

About losing my last job [slashdot.org]. And I even got a reply in it :-)
  • First one was thanking FK for showing me that /. HAD a journalling system. I don't know what my favorite would be. Depeneds on if you meant the one I was happiest to write at the time, the one I'm happiest about now, the one I think is most representative of me, or the one that I enjoyed the comments the most... I don't know. My "I need a job" JE changed my life because Ed helped me get a job and move to ATL. The one called, "They were many, but in the end I was victorious" I really liked, and the one w
  • And they all suck.

    Signing off from comment 11576.
  • If I counted them right (OpenOffice Writer will count words and characters, but not lines?), I have only 116. My first one was titled "Lose the Binary Worldview" and is a rant about the black or white, right or wrong mentality so many people had. Of course, it comes off sounds a bit philosophical and pretentious now. Favorite is a bit hard - I think I'd have to go with one of my random thoughts journals.
  • Most of my more private writing is kept elsewhere. I can't think of a favorite... I personally enjoy some of the stories I've written, including the new ones about the train experiences.

I'm a level six chaotic good dwarf. I'm a tall dwarf, though, so keep the wisecracks to a minimum, or I'll hammer your forehead.

  • Just as I held off from getting a Slashdot account for ages (hence the comparatively high userid), I didn't start using the journal system until quite late. My first one is here [slashdot.org], and still sums up a good many things about my life! My favourite is probably this one [slashdot.org], just because it so accurately portrays a level of frustration I was feeling at the time.
  • I count 155 Journal Entries for me.

The problem is that I KNOW that I posted JEs before July of last year (the first of mine on record). I don't remember what they were about, but I know that I wrote them.
