You're such a pussy. I've been thrown against a car, roughly frisked and told in "clear terms" at the top of his voice if I moved he'd beat my ass. Why? Because I matched the general description of someone who had broken into a nearby home, roughed up the residents and stole their shit and he was calling me in.

It was night time on my regular walk through a nice residential neighborhood. When he confirmed I wasn't the guy and some other cops had the right guy 2 blocks away, he only said, "you're not who I'm looking for, you can go" and he left. End of story.

I finished my walk and went home. Just another night.

Only pussies like you cry like a bitch about a cop telling them to move their illegally parked car. That's all that would have happened if the cop showed at the museum for the bitchy rent a cop. I told you, pussy, I lived in some really rough places. Getting shoved around by a cop was the least of my fears. It was just another Tuesday.

You silly little silver spooned white guys. Such a pussy you post your dumb shit AC.

Or if everyone was armed then the more likely scenario than everyone in the area opening fire like some 80s Hong Kong mob movie is they would've dropped/hid or run screaming the moment they saw a gun or heard a gun shot.

Having lived in some really bad places, I know first hand that's what people do. Real life is not a Hong Kong action movie.

If the attacker and taxi victims all had guns, then the whole thing would've been over in seconds after anyone pulled a firearm.

Are you a script writer? Maybe write fiction as a hobby? Your version would make for a better movie than what would really happen. You should flesh it out and submit your script. I love those old HK over the top super action films; I'd watch your movie.

This is San Francisco. In this case the article does say the cops eventually showed which is very surprising for San Francisco.

The last time I was in the city and got into it with some rent a cop about where I parked, he threatened to call the cops. I told him to "go ahead, I'll be here another 20 minutes and we both know they won't show before I'm gone, if they show at all". He walked away. I left 30 minutes later.

No cops, of course.

In some other nearby cities it's a reasonable expectation that local PD will show for anything in 5-10 minutes but not SF. Just not realistic to expect a cop to show up in SF for anything minor like a psycho being egged on by a psycho crowd as he tries to break into a car to murder the passengers.

And for the record, I was waiting after hours in the back area loading/unloading zone for large trucks at SF Moma which is down a back alley side street and wasn't in the way of anything and easily could have moved out of the way if a truck did show up. Lillie rent a cop girl came out to harass me first then she sent huge rent a cop guy. Seriously, fuck off, it's SF, what are you really gunna do? That's just how it is in ugly uncivilized cities like that.

If that wasn't some tech bro robo taxi I doubt the cops would've showed up at all. Not in SF for little people.

Mostly slashdot has turned into anti-western propaganda created by Putin/Russia and in more recent years by 50 cent per post wolf warriors like everyone's favorite Singaporean who pretends to be American even though everyone has known for years he isn't. But this blimp thing? That takes real American know-how, a sense of humor, and the kind of illogic and ignorance only a drunk public school educated American can come up with! So you still want to go with "Searle has been debunked!!!" which is impossible because we're talking about the philosophy of mind which is not science. It is philosophy. You're saying you just don't understand what philosophy is.

If you want to say I'm wrong, that's cool you're really smart and just saying I'm dumb is sufficient argument for me. Oh yeah, you should also hit me with religious bigotry even though I'm a life long atheist who absolutely does not believe and has never believed in any form of the divine. So that's just more ad hominem.

Your updated argument is thus:
1) I am stupid (because you say so)
2) Searle is wrong. Because you say so.
3) I am a religious zealot. Which I'm not. I simply don't blindly hate religious people.
4) You don't understand how the brain works. Mammalian brains do not sit idle like an LLM. This was already covered by my first post. Creatures with real biological brains have an inner state of mind. Computers do not. They have agency. Computers do not. They have all the things already mentioned that computer do not and can not ever have on our current technological track. But you ignore all that and cut one line out of context and then make a factually incorrect statement about how the human brain works.

Summary:
1) you're still wrong
2) you have presented zero evidence of anything, you just toss insults about, pure ad hominem
3) you do not understand how brains work at the most basic level
4) your entire line of "argument" is intellectually dishonest

I'm still shaking my head at the idea that you would -honestly- believe (you don't, you're trolling) that human brains operate just like computers and without active input will do nothing just like a computer sitting idle waiting for external input.

Slashdot status quo met. I'm moving on. There's no point in trying to discuss with you when you're so dishonest. Go ahead and reply if you like. I expect you'll write more of the same which I will not bother replying as you'd just be trolling more at that point. Have a good day.

The parrot is alive. It has feelings, personal experiences, an individual personality, opinions, a unique perspective of the world as an individual.

An LLM is a machine. It is very complex but it is not alive. It can be analyzed and the output, given certain input, is mathematically predictable and repeatable. Having a few billion levers, knobs and dials does not make an LLM intelligent. Machine complexity only makes it harder to know in advance what the output will be. With enough logging and debug output, you can see exactly how it works. It isn't magic.

The LLM is a program that entirely relies on the input provided to generate an output.
The parrot will bite you, "talk" at you, shit on you, snuggle you, ignore you, and do a variety of other things because that's how it feels at that moment. It has an inner state of thought and consciousness. The LLM has no such thing. It just sits there burning power in some Iowa data center near a corn field waiting for the next instruction in an idle loop. Although waiting implies awareness. It is not actually "waiting" in the sense I wait in the hallway for my daughter to get ready to go to the mall. It is waiting in the sense that her shoes sit in the hallway doing nothing until she interacts with them. Only then do her shoes "do" anything as she picks them up and puts her feet in them. Without her input her shoes do nothing. No different than the LLM; her shoes do nothing until get bored, do not anticipate, do not wonder where they'll walk today.

This is all very basic philosophy of mind stuff from my second year at university. Every time someone posts about LLM being intelligent, I smile slightly, shake my head a little and wonder of an hour of two of undergrad philosophy lecture for everyone would finally kill off this incorrect notion that LLM has -any- intelligence or ability to think.

It does not. LLM is a machine. A very complex machine but a machine nonetheless the less. No amount of additional model size or coding will ever make an LLM into an intelligent self aware being. LLM is the wrong technology to ever produce that.

In school we used to call this "strong vs weak AI". LLM falls squarely into the weak AI box. If anyone has done any serious work on strong AI and made any real progress since I was a university kid, I'd love to see it. Weak AI can appear intelligent but never will be. Strong AI is the real deal; we have yet to see a single strong AI system, even an extremely primitive and stupid one.

Intelligence battle scores:
Parrot: 1
Every LLM ever made or ever will be: 0
Game over.

Parrot wins. Not because it understands whatever sounds it's making (possibly but unlikely; the "talking bird" thing is just a distraction from the real discussion), but because it's a unique living creature with inner thoughts the LLM will never have. We can replace parrot with eagle, cat, dog, rat, cow, giraffe, and any other mammal with a real brain and all this would still be true. I specify mammal because there are plenty of living organisms with no discernible brain yet are clearly still alive. I'm quite certain bacteria does not have an inner state of mind, for example.

Go read John Searle (Berkeley) for much more depth on this topic.

Slashdot is dead anyway. It can be mostly fixed by killing off the sock puppets, and removing mods from the abusive moderators and re-opening to new users. The rest would be going back to de-anonymizing mods to reveal who the dishonest mods are and banning the accounts of the anonymous trolls.

Of course none of that will happen. The owners have some other reasons of their own for running the site into the ground I can't fathom. But they own it so they can run it how they like.
