Journal eglamkowski's Journal: gas prices down 50 cents a gallon 13

On the way to work today I saw 2.51 a gallon, 2.49 a gallon, even 2.47 a gallon. That's down 45 to 50 cents a gallon over the past month or so.

If gas prices had gone UP 50 cents a gallon, we'd have heard a LOT about it in the "news". Gas prices go DOWN 50 cents a gallon, nary a peep.

Funny how that works, eh?

  • It is a Rovian plot. Bush has all his oil company cronies dropping the price before the midterm election. Or some nonsense like that.
  • MD/DC has maybe budged... 10 cents? Maybe? You might duck a cent or two below 3 if you go on the right day.
  • But it was big news here last week. The drop happened late last week. $2.53 was the lowest I saw. The top headline in the local paper was the price per barrel of oil.
  • Maybe not where you live. It's front page news where I am. Maybe nobody made too big a deal because they were expecting the prices to go back up for the holiday weekend. Here, they actually went down another dime to $2.69. ...must keep saying to myself... $2.69 is still not cheap... don't get desensitized... $1.69 would be better...
    • Taking account of externalities, $2.69 is most likely too cheap! So "$1.69 would be better..." should surely read (more neutrally) "$1.69 would be cheaper..."?
      • True. My point was that I remember when everyone was calling for gas station boycotts, etc. when gas prices hit $2.00 a gallon. They've been high for long enough now that all that's been forgotten. They drop to $2.69 and people are dancing in the streets like they just hit the lottery.

Not that I'm complaining about a weekly $0.10 drop...
  • Gas has gone down a whopping 3 cents here. The average price on this side of Washington state is $3.10. Talk about depressing... of course it doesn't help when you have one of the highest gas tax rates in the nation.
  • I paid $3.02/gal while stuck in a traffic jam on Hwy 18 in Grande Ronde on our way back from the coast. That's up 13 cents for the Holiday weekend, but I had no choice- the average 5MPH speed was killing my mileage.
  • Vegas is still around $2.90, or just under that. That's most likely a consequence of all our gas coming from California, which has always been expensive. The only bright spot is that gas didn't go up as much (percentage-wise) this time last year as it did elsewhere.

There's been talk [examiner.com] of building a pipeline from Texas to Arizona, and then extending that pipeline up here. That would give us more reasonable prices and some redundancy in case something happens with the existing pipeline from California (the
