Again, with the accusations of "thief". What have I stolen, exactly? You still have everything you started with. If I were to use the free stuff, it will have exactly the same effect on you as if I use "your" stuff without paying - either way you get no money. The enthusiastic anti-pirates typically claim that piracy costs them money, but if the pirate would use a free alternative if they were unable to pirate then it doesn't.

Ignoring for a moment that I don't actually use any pirated software, that you've written or otherwise.

I didn't ignore that part... but how it works is pretty easily explained by reading the article. There is no need for his ranting post.

Anyway, for a site I would use either Flash or Silverlight for, I wouldn't be targeting mobiles anyway. While mobiles do browse the web increasingly more these days, they're still the fringe.

Mozilla Plans Fix For Critical Firefox Vulnerability In Next Release 140

Trailrunner7 writes "A month after an advisory was published detailing a new vulnerability in Firefox, Mozilla said it has received exploit code for the flaw and is planning to patch the weakness on March 30 in the next release of Firefox. Mozilla officials said Thursday that the vulnerability, which was disclosed February 18 by Secunia, is a critical flaw that could result in remote code execution on a vulnerable machine. The vulnerability is in version 3.6 of Firefox."

Last.fm used to have a setting that was basically like this... they gave you an "obscurity" slider which let you set a preference for stuff that was a good match (via the usual "people who like x also like" algo) but removed the stuff that was over a certain threshold of popularity. I found a ton of bands that I really like this way, but at some point they took away the feature, or hid it in some way.

Long story short, I have found systems like this very useful, and hope to see more of them.

"Presumably from this exact bug?" People are involved in fatal single-car accidents every day where the floormats are securely in place. I believe the technical term is "falling asleep at the wheel." It's only in light of the recent hysteria that the default presumption has become "because the car took control from the driver and caused him to hurtle headlong into a tree." Unanticipated acceleration, even in light of recent events, is still a zebra.

Quake 3 For Android 137

An anonymous reader writes "Over the last two months I ported Quake 3 to Android as a hobby project. It only took a few days to get the game working. More time was spent on tweaking the game experience. Right now the game runs at 25fps on a Motorola Milestone/Droid. 'Normally when you compile C/C++ code using the Android NDK, the compiler targets a generic ARMv5 CPU which uses software floating-point. Without any optimizations and audio Quake 3 runs at 22fps. Since Quake 3 uses a lot of floating-point calculations, I tried a better C-compiler (GCC 4.4.0 from Android GIT) which supports modern CPUs and Neon SIMD instructions. Quake 3 optimized for Cortex-A8 with Neon is about 15% faster without audio and 35% with audio compared to the generic ARMv5 build. Most likely the performance improvement compared to the ARMv5 build is not that big because the system libraries of the Milestone have been compiled with FPU support, so sin/cos/log/.. take advantage of the FPU.''

Mettenbrink's is the second successful prosecution connected to the 'Anonymous' attacks. Drug Decriminalization in Portugal: Lessons for Creating Fair and Successful Drug Policies

On July 1, 2001, a nationwide law in Portugal took effect that decriminalized all drugs, including cocaine and heroin. Under the new legal framework, all drugs were "decriminalized," not "legalized." Thus, drug possession for personal use and drug usage itself are still legally prohibited, but violations of those prohibitions are deemed to be exclusively administrative violations and are removed completely from the criminal realm. Drug trafficking continues to be prosecuted as a criminal offense. ...

More significantly, none of the nightmare scenarios touted by preenactment decriminalization opponents — from rampant increases in drug usage among the young to the transformation of Lisbon into a haven for "drug tourists" — has occurred.
