Journal Klar's Journal: More Gmail Invites 51

I have 5 more gmail invites to give away to slashdot readers. Leave a reason as to why you would like an invite, and your email addy. It is very important to leave your email address, as this is how the invite will be sent to you. Several people who I would have liked to give accounts to last time did not leave their email address. The contest will end this weekend(saturday, or so depending on how busy I am).

Update:
I have chosen 10 winners so far instead of the original 5. I will keep this going, post if you want an account, and I will give more away as I get more invites. Also, if you have any extra invites, feel free to help people out :)

The winners are: doublebackslash, H Fisher, po boy, CaptainPinko, stretch0611, grasshoppa, Atuin the Great, Datafage, KoopaTroopa, and ekkridon

I want to be a self-respecting geek again, for some reason gmail is a requirement.

Not going to work, but if you want, jbj-gmail at ura.dnsalias.org
  • I would like to try it out, I hope to be able to step through the login process so that I can help get something like Mr Postman [sourceforge.net] to act as a proxy.

  • I can't think of a GOOD reason why I need a Gmail account. I run about 5 e-mail servers and the last thing I NEED is another account. But when is a geek ever happy with what they have... I'm really itching to just try it out and see what all the hype is about. If you could hook me up, i'd be grateful. Thanks, dan@orbweaver.net
  • sure - seems like a way to be more of a geek

  • I would like a Gmail invite because I have been trying, with no luck, to get one for sometime. I would really appreiciate it if you would choose me because I am tired of Yahoo and the like. Thank you for being generous enough to offer these invites. blinkin_456@yahoo.com
  • Easy! My hard drive is filling fast. I get a lot of mail, most of it is not spam.
  • I'd like to use GmailFS [slashdot.org] to easily transfer an SDL game I'm writing (and various other things) between the different machines I'm developing it on (not just in my LAN).

  • The primary reason for desiring a Gmail account would be just plain geek pride. Hotmail is run by Microsoft, Yahoo is cluttered, and to run my own email server is too much hassle.

"Behold! I have a Gmail acount! Fear me, those that do not have one!"
*at this point some commence to cowering*
"Ha ha! Yes, your cowering is wise, and pleases me."

So geek pride is the primary reason. The other is that it would be neat to have a new toy to play with. Toys are fun, even if they happen to be email accounts.
  • Yeah, I want to try it out too, but I've got another reason. I teach part-time at a community college ( http://www.rowancabarrus.edu/ [rowancabarrus.edu]) and we're trying to migrate some recordkeeping for our writing tutoring center from big piles of paper to databases. For all the talk about the digital age, we've got very little money actually coming to us for tech; e-mail storage is tiny, we get no server space (besides a webpage for our hours & locations & such), and our machines don't have CD burners. So my sto
  • I think it'd be pretty cool to setup my daughter, ( http://www.tpno.org/pics/emma.gif ) on a gmail account. She's only 5 months now, so it'll be something that she'd have all her life ( well, as long as google runs the service anyway ).
  • I'm addicted to gmail - help a guy out?

I got offered one for free (the first is always free). It was the ride of my life.

A few days later, the shaking started and I knew I needed more - much more.
The prices on ebay were too much. I'd cyber dirty old men for creds to buy more gmail. (btw: asl?)
ebay flooded the market with cheap gmail - it was nasty stuff - I needed 5 just to get through the day.
Then google upgraded and it was so pure.. I nearly OD'd. It was tough and I barely pulled through.

    I got help and

  • My girlfriend and I love going on holiday and visit new countries while making new friends. On our last trip (this august) we made a super trip around china and made some great friends(from USA, AUS & Ireland; we ourselfs are from Belgium). Now however, we really would like to swap some pics (and even small movies) of our travel, which is not really possible with our current hotmail accounts :-)

Not having a geekish reason, I still hope you consider me ;-). We would definitely appreciate it.

    you can

  • I'd like to have an invite to give it to my new wife. We're recently married (1 month minus 1 day) and she's changed her name. Her old email address is her maiden name - we'd both like to get her an "updated" one.

It's to be a surprise if I can get her a GMail account (which she wants badly, as a halfway geek), so the email addy I'm leaving is my own. If I get an invite, I'll sign her up using it.

    Thanks,

  • Accessing Hotmail is painfull and is completely biased against other browsers.
I have to stick with Hotmail becuase I can't find anything better.
Appearently GMail actually cares about blocking spam, which Hotmail is oblivious too.
My Hotmail account runs out of space extremely fast.
And on any free email place they have a tendency to drop emails...
Would appreciate it if you were feeling nice. Thank you.

  • My old boss found the email address i created for my fiance. I created it a few years ago, and he just noticed! Now she needs a new account, but as you know, most of the alternatives to gmail aren't nearly as elegant.
  • I would like a Gmail invite to test it as possible storage space for digital pictures from "work" [hooters.com]. :-)

I go on location a great deal and it would be great to have a third-party means of sending and retrieving photos back at the home office.

My personal email address: kcguys at killercartoons dot com.

  • Reasons: 1) Because i'm from Ontario too 2) Because i'm a student too (computer science/psychology here) 3) Because i'm a geek (people seem to have done this one to death 4) I'm taking up martial arts as well (Aikido & Iaido) 5) I'm also a researcher - though for a children's aid society and I have a cubicle not an office. This concludes my brief statement of justification I can be reached at ekkridon@sympatico.ca
  • I'm working on a new mail service and would like to compare it to the features provided by Gmail. It seems as if Gmail has implemented a number of email "best practices," and I would very much like to benchmark against the Gmail feature set. Should you find this endeavor worthy, please forward the invitation to JLM939 -at- hotmail -dot- com. Thanks!
  • and I can use GMailFS instead, please!
  • I currently work @ www.packet411.com. One of the side projects that I have been working on is addressing spam/virus. I would appreciate having this to be able to obtain various amounts of each, while being able to throttle these.
  • OK we could go for I'm the second lowest slashdot ID as I post this. I allready have sevral gigs of mail sitting in imap(s) folders. And I remember 300 baud acusticaly cuppled modems as modern equipment. Or that Gmails storage is 200 times the size of the fist hard drive purchased for a mear 900 bucks. Well at that and I would love to put gmail up vs my Mimedefanged SSD based SA and Clam AV filter and see who does a better job.

  • I am a sophomore in college, in less than a week, Sept. 5, I'm leaving for London, England for 4 months (one semester). I'm taking my dad's digital camera and will hopefully be hiking all around Ireland, Scotland, and hopefully visiting such wonderful countries like Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Switzerland. I don't have a laptop so i will have to be using my school's very few cumputer's in the lab. I need the Gmail 1GB of storage for all my digital pictures that i'll be taking over the weeken
  • I also believe that it is the current Geek stats symbol. However that is not the real reason. Yahoo recently upgraded everyone to 125MB about a month ago and I am already at 20% usage.

I promise to let you choose who gets my first invitation to repay the favor. Also, I'll be happy to answer Firebird questions that you may have. (I enjoy the web developer extensions and FlashBlock) I can also help answer questions on web development (if that is what you do)

i.e. I would be happy to repay the favor as a knowled

  • My friend and I collaborate on making music with FruityLoops. Sending large files to each other is a bitch, though, as they never seem to get past either his e-mail server or mine. Also, though my own stupidity I recently wiped the hard drive on my music computer and lost some files. We could kill two birds with one stone, however, by sharing a Gmail account; we would send files to ourselves, and then download them from ourselves :) Plus, we would have a gig of backup space.
    • Wow, I am really stupid and did not leave my e-mail address. It's hunterx@mcihispeed.net. Once a guy was dedicated enough to visit my mess of a website and find it, but I wouldn't want to subject anyone else to that.

You forgot to leave an email addy....
    • Drop me a line (@hotmail.com) with your friend's email address, and I'll invite both of you. My username is rcuthbe at that mail service provider.
That way you can email to each other, and not have to share a single gig -- have two!
  • I will be graduating this semester from RPI and don't want to have to use my @alum.rpi.edu address for anything but keeping up with friends, while at the same time I would like a GOOD webmail service to allow me to keep a single address, as after I graduate I may be moving around several times for the first few years. I would really appreciate being able to use Gmail for this instead of getting a Yahoo (or whatever) account and then needing to switch to Gmail when it becomes generally available, so please
  • I could use a GMail account.
I been trying to setup a non-work one. Just realized that I didn't have one the other day, and I don't think that's smart... =)

Anyway, my work email addy is: dave [AT] freepeers [DASH] com

    DASH = DOT

Thanks in advance, if you can send me an invite.

Well, as anyone else, I also would like to give them (Google, that is) a try. Fan of'em for a long time, longing for a @Gmail for some time now. Maybe you can help me out :) Mail at: dp at mailbox dot hu.
  • For about 2 years now I've been working with a web-based e-mail account with a 10MB limit... for the 8 years previous I've had one with a 2MB limit. I do some digital photography, and most of the time I am unable to send pictures out of an account that small. A Gmail account would greatly facilitate things. I'm also sick of the incessant flash ads displayed on my current e-mail site. It actually stops you between viewing each e-mail to make you click past an ad.

Besides, how am I supposed to keep up my

  • After asking all (both) of my friends if they have a gmail invitation, I sat motionless at my keyboard trying to think of who else I could ask. It is starting to set in that I don't have any friends to beg for an invitation. That is even more pitiful than having to beg for an invitation in the first place. I really could use a morsel of help here.
    Thanks!

  • I am a 3rd year computer-science student in university finally starting to get into the "real" world. However, I find it difficult to converse using e-mail. My Hotmail account is only 2mb and it's spam filter hides many valid messages. Also, using Hotmail from Linux is trouble-some.

My Yahoo account is larger but I keep finding a lot of spam in it. I have gotten accounts from my ISPs over the year but whenever I change providers I have to mail everyone and some people still keep on using the older address.

  • My first email was @ college, which of course died when I graduated. For several years, I had a forwarding service from my old CS department, but eventually that died too.
Then my work address was "me" for the early 90s. That lasted about 10 years, but times changed and I moved on to company after company, so now the last thing I want is to give out my work address -- who knows how long it'll be "me"?
So I got a free email account from usa.com. They tanked.
I got one from altavista (Digital, big company,
