Comment Nope, it was just dumb (Score 1) 276

A couple of Union groups wanted to be able to use more of their money for campaigning. They thought they could compete with mega corporations for some fool reason. They couldn't, of course, but it "seemed like a good idea at the time".

And yeah, Dems are representatives. That's both good and bad. You can find a lot of nasty, racist shit even relatively recently (think mid to late 90s) because that's what voters wanted.

Republicans on the other hand want to rule you. This makes sense. They're the right wing, which got it's name from the right wing of the French Assembly where the Monarchists sat.

I'll take Representation over Rulership any day though. I can convince my neighbors not to be assholes. I can't do the same with Mark Zuckerberg.

Vote in your primary. Hell let's not kid ourselves, vote in your Democratic Party primary. The Republican party is so obsessed with culture war they're a lost cause.

Everyone's throwing a fit because the Dems aren't wasting half a billion dollars on a presidential primary when they have an incumbent at the top of the ticket... and ignoring all the down ballot races. There are *tons* of pro-consumer, pro-worker candidates in the primary who would be in Congress if I could get anyone to show up and vote for them.

But it's the same old farts showing up to vote in the primary every year, and I hear the same "but what about electability whining from them every year...

If you want change the primary election is where you get it. Especially with one of our two major parties completely in the thrall of moral panics and culture war B.S.

They just want things they don't like banned, and things they do like protected. Fuck your free speech.

Yup. Witness the fiasco with Twitter. Musk recently won a case in Australia to leave up the video of the minister being stabbed. Musk wanted to show the world how bad "those" people are so he argued on "free speech" principles.

Which is funny because he regularly takes down comments, pictures, and videos of things which go against his far right proclivities. He's even rolled over when certain governments have demanded he censor posts, such as happened in Turkey where posts by opposition candidates were banned from the site. When called out for his hypocrisy about "free speech" he argued it was either comply with the government order or have the entire site banned in Turkey.

So, to sum up, take down one specific video as requested by the government is an assault on "free speech", take down multiple postings as requested by the government is doing what they said or else.

What you neglect to mention is that America developed its carbon foot print in an era when there was zero to little awareness of global warming. We went all in on cars well before global warming was mainstream thought and that's where pretty much all of our emission imbalance relative to the rest of the first world comes from. Now that we know all of these emissions are a global problem threatening the well being of all of humanity and not just local air quality issues we are working to reduce them. We could probably go faster but we are making decent progress and have been for over a decade.

On the other hand countries like China are opening an average of two coal plants per week, each provide some of the dirtiest power out there and will be running for decades to come. They are doing in this with full knowledge that each of these plants are a road block to net zero.

As I imagine you're the same AC troll who wants to blame all of global warming on Americans that pops up every time the subject is mentioned on Slashdot I doubt you care about any of this though. You're a fake environmentalist who cares far more about America bashing than global warming.

Honestly I dont know why we allow AC posting anymore on Slashdot since an account is needed to do so anyways. All it does is give the cloak of anonymity to half-wit mouth breathers and their trolling.

Comment You could just have two UIs (Score 5, Insightful) 120

on one device. It's not that hard. There's plenty of memory to run them both. You'd switch between the two when the device docks / undocks. It'd be like running two different window managers in Linux. And it's not like Apple doesn't have money to make it happen.

What you can't do is have a single UI that does both tasks, Microsoft learned that the hard way with Windows 8.

That said, I can't see doing this since you want to sell both a macbook and an iPad. If you combine them that's one less sale.

And that's just a domestic ones we know about Iran and Russia have massive troll farms of their own

We are the party that gave you citizens united. There are times when you shouldn't listen to us because we can be dumb as a bag of fucking hammers and this is one of them.

A handful of old stupid Democrats are panicking because of all the right wing extremists organizing on Facebook. They look really scary because they cosplay in military gear and every now and then one of them shows up at a gay bar and shoots the place up.

This is similar to how we want to ban assault rifles even though doing so isn't actually going to help because it's easy to build a equally dangerous weapon that gets around any ban you're going to write.

What I'm saying is we're not thinking this through and we're going to get out maneuvered by the authoritarian extremists who want to eliminate section 230. Just like when we brought citizens united we got outmaneuvered by the billionaires in mega corporations and they used a huge blood of money to take over State legislatures and do all sorts of horrible things.

Biden and the older Democrats are really good at some things. They can get some reforms through despite all the billions and billions of dollars being spent to prevent that. If you have a pre-existing medical condition you can thank them for the healthcare you're getting. And they put the hard work into keeping tabs on our military so that they don't become the kind of military you see over in Iran and Russia that take over in a coup. Democrats are very capable administrators and in general do a good job running things.

But we are not immune to stupid ideas and when we get one for the love of fuck you need to speak up. Democrats are first and foremost representatives of the people so they will listen when you speak up. But you have to be very blunt and you have to be very loud.
