Journal Journal: Drupal 7 Fail

My drupal 7 test site decided I was in maintance mode and won't let me log in, see the maintenance mode page, et cetera. NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. AVOID.

Journal Journal: SMAC

I love Alpha Centauri, but boy was it written like canned crap. And the Linux version doubly so. Mental note: Never start a company whose business is porting games to Linux, and then proceed to port something made mostly out of bugs.

AMD

Journal Journal: Fuck you, AMD. 7

I have a Gateway netbook with R690M chipset and Athlon L110 processor. The latest driver for Windows 7 won't let me set scaling options, and I get no scaling at all when an app opens fullscreen. I can open the same software on the same hardware but in Wine (instead of Win7 x64) and I get scaling! Unfortunately, months have gone by but the open source video driver produces graphics corruption on this hardware, so I can't just run Linux (which doesn't have proper multitouch for Synaptics anyway, at least until Synaptics releases their driver suite to end users, assuming that should EVER happen.) And of course, I can't be SURE that I've got the latest driver, because AMD only provides drivers for my hardware to OEMs. AMD produced this hardware and supports it ONLY FOR VISTA, and they abandoned it between Vista and Windows 7.

I can no longer purchase any hardware from AMD because I cannot trust that they will support it.

Good-bye, AMD. I have bought all my CPUs from you and always made an effort to purchase systems with AMD processors when I have been in charge of purchasing decisions. You have shown yourselves to be untrustworthy. I'm done with you.

Ubuntu

Journal Journal: Banshee-Humping Natty Narwhal has Mono

Mono in Ubuntu isn't new, but what is new is specifying Banshee as the default audio program. Rhythmbox does all the same stuff and doesn't use Mono. So now that's two applications you have to replace to remove that garbage... the other being Tomboy, which you can replace with gnote.

Journal Journal: HL2 stops working on Ubuntu

After the last wine update on Maverick I can't play Half-Life 2 again. I thought this was supposed to stop happening.

Microsoft

Journal Journal: No talk on some Wikipedia articles? 4

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Talisman

I want to add some comments to a talk page in hopes that someone will add them someday, as I'm not sure how to integrate them, about Cirrus Logic being hired to do 2 of 4 chips, and subcontracting Silicon Engineering (nee Sequoia Semiconductor) because they weren't competent to do the job themselves. As such I got to sit in on one Talisman meeting (being a sysadmin for SEI at the time.)

Software

Journal Journal: NeroFail

Just after I talk up how great Nero Linux is, it decides to hang during the lead-in. Clicking the cancel button produced a warning dialog and the button greyed and...

Journal Journal: Best Linux distribution for Loki games? 3

I want to run an older Linux distribution in a virtual machine to run Loki's Linux game ports because I'm not happy with the stability of Loki_Compat. Which version and distribution am I likely to have the least problems with?

Journal Journal: Video game/DVD trading suggestions? 5

I am interested in joining some site which permits me to trade games and movies. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which I should use?

Ubuntu

Journal Journal: Thank you Ubuntu 2

Thank you for finally dropping the exim4 dep in favor of procmail. about damned time. It's best not to install a full-featured MTA if the user doesn't need it.

Journal Journal: So over XFS 1

XFS on ARM has bugs. An XFS filesystem of 1TB or so will take over 1GB memory to simply replay the journal, let alone xfs_repair. And finally, my XFS partition just ate its superblock for the second time while rsyncing its contents to the backup volume, which I have just formatted to ext4. Goodbye, XFS. You're a fuckup.

Software

Journal Journal: unison fail

Remote unison requires the same version on both ends. The download site is timing out. In theory: very cool. In practice: quite useless.

Microsoft

Journal Journal: An Open Journal to Microsoft 8

I will not pay more than twenty bucks for something which should be free. I think we both know I'm talking about Xbox Live.
