Submission + - Ryzom Effort Rejected

aerthling writes: The effort to buy the MMORPG Ryzom previously covered has been rejected, according a post on ryzom.org's forums by Xavier Antoviaque, one of the effort's coordinators. From the article:
At the end, there were three offers presented, and the other two were bigger than our's. They are keeping more employees than we do, and offer more money. We should get the details of the other offers soon, so we should be able to know more more then. In the meantime, I would like to personally congratulate the winner, Gameforge, and I wish them good luck.
There's an interesting discussion following the post. They're not giving up, apparently.

Submission + - Cross-platform Wii titles faring badly?

Rogueywon writes: "A glance at Gamerankings.com reveals that two of the the most notable cross-platform titles already available for the Wii, Need for Speed: Carbon and Call of Duty 3, are faring badly in reviews compared to the Xbox 360 and even PS2 versions of the same game. Criticism seems to focus particularly upon the graphics, framerate and sound, with the general consensus on the implementation of the Wiimote controller being more positive. Meanwhile, Far Cry: Vengeance, while not a direct port, is receiving a critical pasting compared to Far Cry titles on other platforms, with some reviews suggesting that the graphical and framerate problems are serious enough to significantly detract from the gameplay. Are these just launch-title teething troubles, or are they a more worrying sign of things to come for Nintendo's latest gamble?"
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Woot sells PS3s to buy Wiis

douglips writes: "Irreverent geek-leaning ecommerce site Woot sold 80 PS3 consoles today. The beautiful part is the item description, which is almost entirely dedicated to slamming the PS3 and touting the Wii. "In fact, we love the Wii so much, we want to give a Wii to everybody on our payroll. To fund this Wii-for-the-People program, we're selling this Sony PlayStation 3.""

New Stargate Series In the Works 294

Skythe writes "Gateworld reports that an exclusive, third Stargate series is in the works: 'The new series is in the concept phase, and is being actively worked on by the Vancouver creatives behind Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. No concept for the show has yet been revealed.' Gateworld also reports despite the cancellation of SG-1, the series is likely for a 2007 debut. I wonder if the direct-to-dvd movies will any influence on the new series, and what the concept behind the show will be?"

Submission + - Why Does Everyone Hate the RIAA?

aardvarkjoe writes: I'm doing a short project on the RIAA and its impact on society. A considerable part of this project has been looking into people's perceptions of the music industry and the heavily negative bias of that perception. Since Slashdot is one of the world's forefront leaders on RIAA hatred, I wanted to know: just why do you hate the RIAA? Please be as descriptive and as thorough as you like. Counter arguments and positive comments are also appreciated.

Submission + - Wii Smashes Aussie Sales Record, Retailers Respond

Anonymous Coward writes: "Gameworld Network are reporting that the Wii sold through 32,901 consoles in the first four days on sale in Australia, and almost 50,000 games. This represents the most successful console launch ever in the country, beating out the Xbox 360 launch earlier in the year where Microsoft sold an admirable 30,000 consoles.

Nintendo consoles (including Wii and DS) accounted for 67% of all video game hardware sales last week.

"Myer has just experienced a strong spike in total business which can be largely attributed to the introduction of Wii," explains Bernie Brookes, Myer CEO. "We couldn't be happier with the fantastic products Nintendo are releasing. Our Wii launch experience has really shown that consumers have made Myer a destination store for gaming."

Meanwhile, local retailer Harvey Norman missed out on the Wii altogether, with Nintendo citing that the retail chain was demanding the consoles at a cheaper price point than everyone else. Late last year, the retailer also pulled GameCube hardware and software from shelves. Perhaps now, with the success of the Wii, they will have to reconsider how they do business with Nintendo."

Submission + - Upset Customer sticks it to Dell

probielantow writes: A man upset with the way he had been treated by Dell customer support over the course of 19 different phone calls decided instead to take a legal route, however instead of having the summons delivered to Dell headquarters, the man cleverly decided to have it delivered to his local mall kiosk. Not supringsingly no representative from Dell ever showed up at the hearing, and the customer won the default of $3000. Talk about sticking it to the man. Dead Musicians Signing Media Rights Petitions 357

epeus writes "Following from the Gowers coverage and the Musicians' ad in the FT, Larry Lessig admits he was wrong about term extension: 'If you read the list, you'll see that at least some of these artists are apparently dead (e.g. Lonnie Donegan, died 4th November 2002; Freddie Garrity, died 20th May 2006). I take it the ability of these dead authors to sign a petition asking for their copyright terms to be extended can only mean that even after death, term extension continues to inspire. I'm not yet sure how. But I guess I should be a good sport about it, and just confess I was wrong. For if artists can sign petitions after they've died, then why can't they produce new recordings fifty year ago?'"

Submission + - What soda does to your body

DeadboltX writes: Healthbolt.net has a story outlining what happens inside your body when you drink a coke

"# In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don't immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
# 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get it's hands on into fat."

The article goes on to explain how the caffeine binds itself to calcium, magnesium and other nutrients and gather in your bladder to get expelled rather than go to a bone to make it stronger as well as a few other effects.

Submission + - McKinney Introduces Bill to Impeach Bush

MalevolenTsunami writes: " In what was likely her final legislative act in Congress, outgoing Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney introduced a bill Friday to impeach President Bush." " In the bill, she accused Bush of misleading Congress on the war in Iraq and violating privacy laws with his domestic spying program. McKinney has made no secret of her frustration with Democratic leaders since voters ousted her from office in the Democratic primary this summer. In a speech Monday at George Washington University, she accused party leaders of kowtowing to Republicans on the war in Iraq and on military mistreatment of prisoners. McKinney, who has not discussed her future plans, has increasingly embraced her image as a controversial figure. She has hosted numerous panels on Sept. 11 conspiracy theories and suggested that Bush had prior knowledge of the terrorist attacks but kept quiet about it to allow friends to profit from the aftermath."
