A must view.

Submission + - Slashdot irresponsible ?

Pipelino writes: Guys, when /. sets as the quote of the day: "malpractice, n.: The reason surgeons wear masks", it's not funny, nor bright english humour, it is just plain stupid and irresponsible. Let's not go into a debate: nobody cares where it came from, just take it back. Please.

Submission + - AT&T iPhone Family Plan Rip Off 1

aralin writes: All AT&T Family Plans list price for first two lines, with additional line for $9.99. Except for iPhone family plans(click Family), where obviously family starts with one person. I do understand the additional data charge of $20 for each phone. But the $9.99 charge for a second phone is quite unprecedented. You can hear Cali Lewis from GeekBrief rave about it and threaten to return her iPhones, until she just accepted the rip off the next day, like many of us. Yes, there is a fine print somewhere, but the way the family plan is presented is at the very least deceptive and sleazy. Par for the course with AT&T.

Submission + - PS3 price drop sonner than expected. (kotaku.com)

xtracto writes: Kotaku is reporting to have received reports from a number of readers that some Target retail stores have already instituted the $100 price drop on the PLAYSTATION 3, breaking the July 12 price break and selling the 60 GB model at the new, rumored price of $499. They confirmed with Target locations in Bend, Oregon and Beavercreek, Ohio that the stores are now selling the PS3 at the new lower price

Submission + - Ron Paul More Cash On Hand Than McCain

Lawrence_Bird writes: Longshot Republican presidential hopeful and internet phenom Ron Paul (TX-14) reported today his campaign has more cash on hand ($2.4M) than does John McCain ($2M) and only slightly less than Mitt Romney ($3M excluding his personal loans). Paul's spokesman noted(nytimes) that most of the donations were via the internet and that Paul is able to run a much more frugal campaign (he has only 11 staffers) because of his wide spread support via sites such as youtube and meetup. The campaign was also the first to provide an iPhone specific platform to allow access to campaign materials.

Submission + - DVD-only PC games or piracy only options? (ea.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: The fifth and newest Harry Potter game, "The Order of the Phoenix," came out last week. The PC version of the fourth game was so abysmally bad http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/ B0009YJM9W/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_top/002-5384247-022723 7?ie=UTF8&n=468642&s=videogames#customerReviews I hesitated to buy this new one, but my kids want to try it so I went searching. It turns out that "Phoenix" is DVD-Rom only http://www.ea.com/harrypotterandtheorderofthephoen ix/features.jsp?platform=pc&ncc=1 and our household PCs have only CD players! Our whole family prefers games on PCs, so I'm not about to buy a video console. And I'm certainly not going to buy new computers or DVD-Rom drives just so that we can play one single game that probably will suck anyway. What are these game manufacturers thinking? Given the short shrift they seem to be giving PC games, is it time to declare the official death of PC-version games? And most importantly, since EA Games won't let me buy this one, where should I download a CD-Rom version for free off the Internet?

Submission + - Symantec's Tech (non)Support

carpeweb writes: "I'm stuck. OK, I admit, in hindsight, my decision to use Norton 360 for "Secure Online Backup" seems pretty stupid. I have been trying for more than three weeks to get Symantec to restore my files. After a week, I started insisting that their tech support people escalate the issue to an executive with the authority to approve simply copying my files from their servers to CDs. Symantec's policies and procedures seem to prohibit any sort of escalation out of tech support and up to a managerial level. In fact, their policies and procedures seem to prohibit escalation back to Symantec. (Symantec has outsourced support to e4e and Sutherland, among others.) I've had dozens of support calls with over 25 analysts (telephone and online chat), all of which end with "it was a pleasure to assist you" but no actual assistance. So, I'm escalating this issue to /.. Who else has had problems restoring files from Norton, and what have they done about it? I'd love to hear any strategy that worked. Short of that, I'd love to embarrass Symantec to the point where they might actually consider helping me."

Submission + - Linux official lines up with Microsoft against GPL

E5Rebel writes: "The new GNU General Public License (GPL) version 3 is not a fit for Linux because switching would require permission from the kernel's thousands of de-facto owners, a leading developer said, while at the same time Microsoft said it had no responsibilities under GPLv3, despite its tie-up with Novell http://www.computerworlduk.com/technology/developm ent/software/news/index.cfm?newsid=3904"

Submission + - ZDNet Says AMD Posts Blatantly Deceptive Benchmark

Glasswire writes: "George Ou, in ZDNet's Real World IT blog accuses AMD of comparing processors the company will not be shipping for months (2.6GHz Barcelona quad core) with older Intel Xeon quad cores rather than currently shipping ones which would beat the (hypothetical) score AMD claims for the future Barcelona. I guess while even the much slower 2.0GHz Barcelona is due soon (but STILL not shipping yet) AMD didn't think results from the 2.0 would look good enough -even against the slower Xeons they picked.
Maybe the right comparison should be either best cpu against best cpu -OR compare ones at the same price — and only shipping products."

Submission + - The Missing iPhone Feature -- Now at T-Mobile (nytimes.com)

tregetour writes: "
Here's the basic idea. If you're willing to pay $10 a month on top of a regular T-Mobile voice plan, you get a special cellphone. When you're out and about, it works like any other phone; calls eat up your monthly minutes as usual.

But when it's in a Wi-Fi wireless Internet hot spot, this phone offers a huge bargain: all your calls are free. You use it and dial it the same as always — you still get call hold, caller ID, three-way calling and all the other features — but now your voice is carried by the Internet rather than the cellular airwaves.

Perhaps far more revolutionary than the iPhone. Full Article"

Submission + - Dual control schemes for EA Sports Wii titles (gamasutra.com)

RamblinLonghorn writes: "EA announces that the next iteration of EA Sports titles will contain dual control schemes. Madden NFL 08, NBA Live 08 and FIFA Soccer 08 will have two separate ways to control the action, with one using only the Wiimote and the other using the Nunchuck and Wiimote in tandem.

The Family Play system will utilize only the Wii Remote and will debut in the above titles as an option before each multiplayer game, with advanced combined Wii Remote and Nunchuck controls available for experienced players. EA says the Family Play controls will let younger and less experienced players use the remote's motion sensitive controls for "shooting, passing, snapping, and throwing" while "the console controls the rest.""

Submission + - Apple's Jobs takes (another) swing at Greenpeace

coondoggie writes: "Apple CEO Steve Job took a big swipe at Greenpeace and two of its representatives attending Apple's shareholder meeting this week saying: "I think your organization particularly depends too much on principle and not enough on fact," Jobs said to the Greenpeace representatives. "You guys rate people based on what people say their plans are in the distant future, not what they are doing today. I think you put way too much weight on these glorified principles and way too little weight on science and engineering. It would be very helpful if your organization hired a few more engineers and actually entered into dialog with companies to find out what they are really doing and not just listen to all the flowery language when in reality most of them aren't doing anything. That's my opinion." http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/1507 1"

Submission + - Internet Gambling in US May return

joedoc writes: "Not much about this on the wires yet, but Reuters is running a story that Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass) will introduce a bill on Thursday that will lift the current ban on Internet wagering on casino gaming sites. Internet gambling was banned last year when President Bush singed a bill outlawing the use of bank and credit card transactions to fund those activities. I generally support the conservative side of things, but the libertarian in me always believed this was an example of egregious nanny-state politics that never should have passed muster."
