Submission + - Worst Mass Shooting in U.S. History (cnn.com) 17
An anonymous reader writes: From CNN:
"Fifty people were killed inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, Orlando Police Chief John Mina and other officials said Sunday morning, just hours after a shooter opened fire in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. At least 53 more people were injured, Mina said. Police have shot and killed the gunman, he told reporters.
The shooter is not from the Orlando area, Mina said. He has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, about 120 miles southeast of Orlando, two law enforcement officials tell CNN.
Orlando authorities said they consider the violence an act of domestic terror. The FBI is involved. While investigators are exploring all angles, they "have suggestions the individual has leanings towards (Islamic terrorism), but right now we can't say definitely," said Ron Hopper, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Orlando bureau."

The fact Reddit are censoring all comments over the shooter's identity is a good reason to discuss it here IMO.

When the story broke there were dozens of threads speculating that it was a neo-Nazi or other right wing nutjob which the mods had no problems with. As soon as it was revealed that the shooter was a Muslim, operation 1984 went into full effect. It was actually scary to see not just individual comments, but entire threads being deleted in front of my eyes.
This is why I believe the Slashdot moderation system, while not perfect, is probably the best out there, and is why I would like to comment on news and current affairs here over the cancerous shithole that Reddit has become.

Anyway, this should be posted, it's worth discussing. Gun control is a big issue here too, so it should probably come with a TRIGGER WARNING for the pro-gun lobby on Slashdot (no pun intended). Well, it's a long-shot (very long indeed) to compare this to North Korea. Anyway my guess is that the admin are taking their sweet fucking time to work on how they'll put this news. But, honestly /. staff, you deserve last place at the efficiency competition today.
