Anthropic Hires OpenAI Co-Founder Durk Kingma 8

OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma announced that he'll be joining Anthropic. "Anthropic's approach to AI development resonates significantly with my own beliefs," Kingma wrote in a post on X. "[L]ooking forward to contributing to Anthropic's mission of developing powerful AI systems responsibly. Can't wait to work with their talented team, including a number of great ex-colleagues from OpenAI and Google, and tackle the challenges ahead!" TechCrunch reports: Kingma, who has a Ph.D. in machine learning from the University of Amsterdam, spent several years as a doctoral fellow at Google before joining OpenAI's founding team as a research scientist. At OpenAI, Kingma focused on basic research, leading the algorithms team to develop techniques and methods primarily for generative AI models, including image generators (e.g. DALL-E 3) and large language models (e.g. ChatGPT). In 2018, Kingma left to become a part-time angel investor and advisor for AI startups. He rejoined Google in July of that year, and started at Google Brain, which became one of the tech giant's premiere AI R&D labs before it merged with DeepMind in 2023.

Understandably, the facts do not look good. The "Chinese Room" is as intact as it has ever been.

A common thread is that these people speak of AI like it's a religion. It says a lot about who these people are.

It's software that runs on a computer. I don't recall anyone saying that developing a BIOS, a version of a word processor or firmware for an embedded sensor "resonates significantly with my own beliefs". It's not different, they're just more full of shit and the windfall profits are much greater.

      • The Transhumanists think they are creating an AI God and plan to merge with it to live forever.

These same people describe themselves as new atheists too.

Even IBM didn't worship their BIOS like that.

Pretty much. And yes, it is a "God" they are searching and desperately hope to find.

These same people describe themselves as new atheists too.

As an "old" atheist, I find the sheer amount of stupidity these people express staggering. They claim to be atheists, but all the believe is simply a variant of standard theism. Yes, there may be more than physical reality (looks more and more likely as we fail to find explanations for things like consciousness and general intelligence), but it will most certainly not lurk in digital computers or "AI" running on it. And the

      • AI actually is my religion. But where we are at right now is someone found a way to encode encyclopedias of info as the brain encodes it, so you can query it like querying someone else's brain when you ask them something. If the general theory of AI is out there, no one is talking about it.

Exactly. And about how trustworthy their statements about reality are.
