Amazon Plans To Invest Another $15 Billion in India By 2030 (techcrunch.com) 10

Amazon plans to more than double its investment in India in the next seven years, the e-commerce group said, joining a roster of other high-profile American giants ramping up commitment to the South Asian market after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week. From a report: The e-commerce group has invested about $11 billion in India to date and plans to pour another $15 billion more by 2030, Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy said Friday. The vast majority of the new capital is likely earmarked for AWS expansion in India. The company said last month that it plans to invest $12.7 billion into its cloud business in the South Asian nation by 2030.

With how close India and Russia are tied together, this means Russia is definitely getting an economic shot in the arm from this. Maybe even China, because India loves playing both sides just as a middle finger to everyone.

I don't get these investments in hostile countries. Investing in BRICS countries is just idiocy personified.

  • Throwing good money after bad.
    • Sure. It's not like Amazon has ever made out well by sinking large sums of time and money into something others pooh-pooped as unprofitable folly.

  • You get what you pay for.
  • I remember in the 60's..."made in Japan" was CRAP! Then they got better, their people demanded more, and the companies pulled out. Some moved to Korea. Then their people started demanding more, and the companies pulled out. China opened up and the companies thought they found a GOLD mine. A communist dictatorship that the people can't demand jack sh*t! But the political fallout is causing companies to pull out. The next cheap labor on the market? INDIA.
    • Japanese products were either really good or really bad in the 60's, but now it's mostly the excellent, smaller, niche products that survived because they don't have corporate overlords. They've stayed true to their markets as KK's.

There's always a next cheaper place to make crap, until the standard-of-living has flattens everywhere. Made in (country in Africa) is the next likely maquiladora destination.
