Amazon To Develop Air Cargo Facility at Newark Liberty Airport (bloomberg.com) 13

Amazon struck an agreement with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to develop an air-cargo facility at Newark Liberty International Airport. From a report: Amazon Gobal Air, the company's cargo airline, plans to spend $125 million to transform two existing buildings at the airport, according to a Port Authority news release. The agency will receive $157 million in rent over a 20-year lease and an upfront payment of $150 million. The lease is expected to take effect later this year, the Port Authority said.

So what? Are commercial leases really that exciting and newsworthy?

A $150 million dollar fee for the facility, $157 million in rent over 20 years, and $125 million in shelving, robotics, conveyor belts and one (1) bathroom - so what?

We want private pilots to fly for us must have own equipment and will be paid per package.

  • What happens when amazon has vertically integrated from the point of manufacture all the way to when the package arrives at your door anywhere in the world. This is the case now, but even more so when they stop flying UPS/FEDEX. At one point, UPS and FEDEX will be out of business and you will ship normal cargo/mail with AMAZON POSTAL. Why is Amazon not the subject of massive antitrust talk? Oh, I know, because they have the right lobby and politicians are scared to be the reason why I have to pay more for
  • Having quit buying from Amazon, the only thing that will bring me back is cookies.... Delivered to my rural location.... Within 30 minutes. And if your drones harm one of my goats, I'm going to shoot it (the drone) so Fly Safe.
  • Are they building new runways? If not then I see delays for passenger planes due to more utilization. Can't they find some under-utilized little airport like Allentown and use their runways?
  • Wait until Alexandria Occasionally-Cortical hears about this.
  • Newark has been the best--cleanest, efficient, and on-time airport in the NYC area. Maybe it's not tough to beat the mess that is JFK or LGA but I've always had a good experience with Newark and rarely with the other two. I just hope Amazon doesn't ruin Newark.

That's setting a very low bar. PHL is an extra half-hour drive from where I live in central Jersey, but if I'm not flying United through the almost-good Terminal C, PHL is easier all around. We'll see what happens when the new Terminal A opens.
