EU Justice Chief Urges US Tech Giants To Halt Virus Clickbaits (reuters.com) 23

EU justice chief Vera Jourova on Thursday criticised U.S. tech giants such as Google and Facebook for making money off coronavirus-related fake news instead of putting in more efforts to stop the deluge. From a report: With millions of people confined to their homes due to lockdowns to counter the spread of the virus, social media and online platforms have seen the volume of news on their sites and user traffic soared. That has in turn sparked alarm and criticism because of the flood of disinformation. Jourova, who last week held a conference call with Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla, said their efforts to date were inadequate. The companies last week told Jourova that they had removed large quantities of false and harmful content, the bulk of which related to health, and taken measures to remove ads related to protective equipment, such as masks, although there were still gaps. They also pledged to step up measures to increase users' access to authoritative sources of information.

    Front page of CNN:
"An ER doctor dies in his husband's arms"
    "A coronovirus window's warning"
"I had the wildest night of my life because of virus"

These may all be completely factual articles, but this is garbage. Back in the day of actual journalism, the personal stories would be rolled together into one story titled "The personal impact of coronoavirus" It's important to report on the personal side of the issue, but the melodramatic headlines are clickbait garbage.

There are also a disgusting number of headlines about celebrities. Is Jack Black singing without a shirt really front page material at this time?

Your fault for visiting CNN, it's been garbage for years.

    • That's not just a problem at CNN, it's a problem that you're reading a wire feed rather than edited reports. The editor would have combined that for you, but you're looking at three separate reports by three separate reporters. That is called a "wire fire" (3 stories that are similar in different places...) and should trigger an editor or network reporter stepping in, sorry you were on the wrong page.

      • Errr no. That is literally on https://cnn.com/ [cnn.com]

        • I was sad to learn that it was a Coronavirus widow and not a Coronavirus window giving the warning. :)

However, I did notice that the state of Georgia just issued a lockdown and that the reason, or part of it, was that the Governor just found out that people that didn't show symptoms, asymptotic being too big of a word I guess, were able to spread the virus. He said that was a game changer. FFS they knew that in Washington State back in February from it happening there. Don't you watch the newsier get briefe

"I had the wildest night of my life because of virus"

He called it his wildest night ever, which is just so, so very sad.

  • Okay, say you're Google. (After all, the CA Governor wants more of them...) What do you display when a user puts "COVID-19 home remedies" in the search box?

There are some people who believe there's a home solution for everything... so what do you tell those people in this day and age?

  • rules and regulations.
Stay with freedom of speech and freedom after speech in the USA.
Freedom of the press and the freedom to publish. The USA understands to protect the tools and methods of publication.
Away from the tyranny of EU rules and regulations.
