Journal drinkypoo's Journal: Holy Cow Apple are Total Fucks 6

So I'm playing with this antique iMac because whee shit and I'm trying to download the 1GB developer tools DMG and Apple sure makes it a gigantic pain in the arsehole, don't they? You can't just download the URL with wget without rigamarole which I haven't gone through yet. I can't actually load the site in Safari at all because of some kind of https error. And my download just failed somehow in the last seconds, which means I get to download it all over again. And then it may fail again. Other downloads are working fine, it's just Apple that's incompetent here somehow.

This is the kind of thing that convinces me that anyone who gives Apple money is either a moron or a masochist. Luckily, I got this machine for free, so all I'm wasting is time.

  • Power. Bandwidth. And being an old iMac, likely space as well. . .

  • I'm curious to know what you would want to do with an original iMac. I worked at CompUSA back when those first came out (and have not-very-fond memories of some of the stupid requirements that Apple placed on us regarding getting them in to our store to sell). They were tolerable back then but I'm pretty sure my smartphone is more usable now.

First gen would be PowerPC G3; I can't think of a good reason to want to have one of those around any more. As much as I really wanted RISC to succeed in the PC
    • It's the last of its kind, with the 1.25 GHz processor, the fanciest video card (32MB, IIRC) and with USB2. I'm just taking a walk down memory lane, and what little I get out of it is familiarizing myself with the point at which Apple left PPC users twisting in the wind.

I used a dual G5 at a previous employer for a little while but it was a work machine so I didn't do anything weird to it.

Those who can, do; those who can't, write. Those who can't write work for the Bell Labs Record.
