Journal BarbaraHudson's Journal: Another TV season, another Transparent freak show. 14

What is portrayed on that show is not how it is for many of us in real life. Putting a man in a dress and having him portray a transsexual is not really going to capture it, except for the unpassable. But of course, that's what makes good TV. The truth is boring.

Of course, it IS more accurate in portraying the intersection between transsexuals and the LGB community - but only for those who believe that the LGBT community is also their community. If you're not a gay/lesbian/bi transsexual, it's an alien portrayal except for a few freaks.

But don't you dare say so - it goes against the "agenda."

One of my neighbors called me over to watch it, and she knew I was trans. At one point, "Maura" is walking into a restaurant for a date. I couldn't help but say "What the heck? The walk, the posture, that just screams man in a dress." She said that she was thinking the same thing. Come on, put at least a minimal effort into it. What I see there is parody. The hollywood/gay community's view of transsexuals is so full of shit compared to most straight transsexual's lives outside the "community." Assholes.

  • Sorry, but when I saw the headline, I thought you were talking about the elections...

  • For the benefit of those of us without ready access to US television, perhaps you could actually include the NAME of the thing in your post? Cheers.

    • Your first clue: Did you think Barb capitalized "Transparent" in the subject line on accident?

Your second clue: Excluding said subject line, "trans" appears only about, oh, six times.

Disclaimer: I'd never heard of the show. But I guess I evidently have mad powers of deduction.

I'm an American and I have no idea what show is being discussed, either. She didn't name the show.

  • Unfortunately the media (especially the news)
dont ever try to show anything accurately, their higher priorities are to shock for cheap thrills and push whatever spin/wierd social agenda that is currently being mandated by their Jewish owners/overlords to control the braindead masses.

    • News as entertainment. They've been finding that it's cheaper to report what people said on twitter than to do any actual investigative reporting, or at-the-scene interviews. Facts are secondary.

Kind of blurred the line between reality and fantasy for the average viewer. And as you point out, cheap thrills sell. Especially ones that cater to stereotypes and let people laugh at those same stereotypes, not realizing that it's not really how things are. Before, programs such as All in the Family used stereoty

From the outside looking in, grouping LGBT together into the same community always did seem somewhat patronisingly insensitive and clueless to me, and prone to internal stresses. I mean I have absolutely no first hand experience or even clue about what actually goes on in the LGBT community, but it seems fairly self evident that T has really nothing to do with L, G or B. Especially when you listen to people like Eddie Izzard in a rare serious moment talking about their own motivations.
        In my perhaps clueless

        • It started when the gay cross-dressers hijacked the term transgender to mean them. Until then, transgender and transsexual were interchangeable terms.

Blame Arnold Lowman [wikipedia.org], who first abused the term, after falsely claiming to invent it, originally for straight crossdressers.

Prince’s idea of a "true transvestite"[6] was clearly distinguished from both the homosexual and the transsexual, claiming that true transvestites are "exclusively heterosexual... The transvestite values his male organs, enjoys using them and does not desire them removed

So transvestites had nothing to do with either, even though plenty of transvestites go on to be gay ... yeah, right. And if you value your maleness at the core, how are you in any way anything except a drag queen?

          Of course today cross-d

            >> more along the lines of what men think is sexy than what women are really like.

After many conversations with women about it, its clear to me that it really is them that want to do it, its not for what they think guys want.

It seems to me that the only men that actually do like women looking like that are total knuckedraggers. The other 99% of us really don't.

I'm a conventional hetero guy and I personally much prefer a natural-looking female (jeans, T shirt and minimal or no makeup). In fact I find i

            • It's ugly as all hell, but it must be working, with the high incidence of HIV. Search for transgender aids hiv percentage and be prepared to be shocked. Highest incidence of aids of any group.

I really have no experience of the transgender community, and actually prefer to keep it that way.

                  Too late.

But it wasn't that bad after all.

Honestly discussing what you are thinking and feeling is an excellent approach, and when others learn how to be genuine and kind, even outside of their comfort zone, then no matter what our level of discomfort or fear or uncertainty, it need not overwhelm our compassion and humility. Your civility and focus manage quite well outside of your comfort zone. Uneasy as you may feel discussing the topic of the transgender experience, the folks who live it can relate to
