mdsolar writes: Areva-Siemens, the consortium building Finland's biggest nuclear reactor, said on Monday the start date of the much delayed project will be pushed back to late 2018 — almost a decade later than originally planned.

Areva-Siemens blamed disagreements with its client Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) over the plant's automation system, the latest blow for a project that has been hit by repeated delays, soaring costs and disputes.

storkus writes: The release of Haswell-E and a price drop on Devil's Canyon has made me itch for a PC upgrade. However, looking around I discovered a pair of horror stories on Phoronix (2nd story link at the bottom of the first), and plenty more Googling around.

My question: if MSI, Gigabyte, Asus (and by extension Asrock) are out, who's left and are they any good? Note that I want to build a (probably dual-boot, but don't know for sure) gaming and "other" high-end machine with one of the above chips so we're talking Z97 or X99; however, these stories seem to point to the problems being M$-isms in the BIOS/UEFI structures rather than actual hardware incompatibility, combined with a real lousy attitude (despite the Steam distro being real soon now).

No one in either party's base gives a fuck about the gender or orientation of the holder of some office they've never heard of and will never care about. Maybe a few geeks care about this? Maybe?

No position or issue is too obscure for congress and their PR agency, Fox News, to use as ammunition against the president.

An anonymous reader writes: NASA's Opportunity rover has been rolling around the surface of Mars for over 10 years. It's still performing scientific observations, but the mission team has been dealing with a problem: the rover keeps rebooting. It's happened a dozen times this month, and the process it a bit more involved than rebooting a typical computer, taking a day or two to get back into operation every time. To try and fix this, the Opportunity team is planning a tricky operation: reformatting the flash memory from 125 million miles away. "Preparations include downloading to Earth all useful data remaining in the flash memory and switching the rover to an operating mode that does not use flash memory. Also, the team is restructuring the rover's communication sessions to use a slower data rate, which may add resilience in case of a reset during these preparations." The team suspects some of the flash memory cells are simply wearing out. The reformat is scheduled for some time in September.

taikedz writes: A very interesting discussion is taking place in the Haiku mailing list. A developer has created a working prototype implementation of the BeOS API layer on top of the Linux kernel, and he is wondering if the project is worth pursuing.

Both 'sides' make a lot of compelling arguments, and it gives a lot of insight into decisions that went into the Haiku project, both past and present.

We're sorry you think our predicament is so bad, but we do enjoy floating our yacht on ocean sized volumes of cash, our yachts are big enough the waves aren't an issue, perhaps if you pulled your head out of your ass for a second you would realize this and you would realize that while you try to act like some one cares what you think, you are nothing, hence your AC post. I'd bet a months pay you don't make $20/hour, let alone 200. Your ignorance wreaks that of a 15 year old without a clue how the real world operates and certainly indicates that you have absolutely no idea what happens in a company the scale of Microsoft. You seem to think %0.00001 of your customers having an issue with regressions is the end of the world.

An anonymous reader writes: U.K. Home Secretary Theresa May said the government was raising the terror threat level to Severe, the second-highest level, based on new intelligence from Syria and Iraq. "The increase in the threat level is related to developments in Syria and Iraq where terrorist groups are planning attacks against the West," May said in a statement in London. "Some of those plots are likely to involve foreign fighters who have traveled there from the U.K. and Europe to take part in those conflicts." Prime Minister David Cameron is to make a further statement later today.
