Comment Floating-yet-submerged pipeline? (Score 1) 678

Hmm... How about a floating-yet-submerged pipeline?

Water flowing through plastic tubes anchored offshore ... (still submerged mind you - but not laying the seabed).

It could start small -- say two 12 inch pipes, then more, or larger, pipelines added once the concept was proved.

Why does this work? For one thing, eminent-domain, right-of-way issues pretty much go away. And the problem of structural support turns into keeping pipeline sections from _rising_, rather than falling (caused by the natural bouyancy of the pipeline and its contents)

Secondly, many of the 'distinguished' signatories are in cahoots with the GMO industry -- including one that was earlier a shill for the tobacco industry. See this post for details: http://science.slashdot.org/co...

Comment Re:They're called trees. (Score 1) 128

Haha - you can't see the wood for the trees! (this idiom has a double meaning here)

See the tree? The wood is almost all 'fixed' carbon.

And when it dies, a tree doesn't go 'poof' in a cloud of CO2. Instead, organic matter gets trapped in the ground and new topsoil is created (again, mostly carbon).

Recall a well tended urban 'nature strip' in an older suburb (a century or more)? Typically, the strip tends to 'pops out' from its concrete lining. That's a small version of the same effect.

Instead of having airlines staff the flight deck back up again to previous levels (i.e. reinstating the flight engineer, or adding a third pilot), cue the snake-oil salesmen with the same pitch - irresistible to airlines - which got us into this mess.

If "third world" Pakistan can control itself while wielding nuclear weapons, I'm sure Iran can as well. The inescapable fact of the matter is this: The United States does not "militarily" mess with nation possessing nuclear weapons. This fact alone makes the weapons highly desirable.

Didn't stop us from covertly assassinating a high-valued target with a special-ops team.

Dude : droning on against disbelievers is not helpful to your cause.

Stop the frankenstienish stretched analogies. Some folk here have creative alternatives and are not trolls ; they deserve serious answers.

And yes, they are right about the danger - a sudden gust of wind that lifts a large, twisting, plastic sheet can foul all of a drone's propellors - whether 6 or 16. Which can fly it into a powerline, a soft skull, another drone, or your windshield doing 67 mph.

Comment Operation Downfall (Score 1) 341

The number killed was very approximately 100,000. It is plain that not even the majority could possibly have been military personnel.

Clearly. However, the most important thing is to compare the Bombs to the estimated casualties of Operation Downfall--a hell of a lot more Japanese people would have been killed by the Allied invasion.
