Apple double-pinky swearing that they'll never, unh-uh, not ever unlock your iPhone

That's not what they said - they said the've altered it so they CANNOT unlock your iPhone, even if they want to.

Given how the technology works, that is a quite reasonable assertion. iOS devices have had full device encryption for some time, without that key you have nothing.

All this "canary" bullshit begs the question why, if Apple really cared one little bit about their customers, don't they just come out and say what they have to say.

That just shows a misunderstanding of what companies are legally ALLOWED to say. Once you get the order you CANNOT talk about it, thus the device of the canary.

That's TWENTY YEARS where they would be using their old communication methods while we were hunting them. There should not be a terrorist left alive.

The PROBLEM is that we collect too much data. It is impossible to process into useful information. It is a mass of "dots" for 300,000,000 people that increases every single day.

And terrorists are so rare that they (and their communications) vanish into the mass of regular people. If you live in the USofA you are more likely to be killed by someone in your own family than by a terrorist.

Sooo .. all the people out in the countryside with the subsidized phone, water electricity service should just suck it up in this case?

The parts of the "countryside" that do not get federal water subsidy fall into 2 categories: (a) places with water already, and (b) places that arent populated.

Now lets not confuse cause and effect. It is only through water subsidy that the unpopulated areas, such as deserts, will ever become populated. There does not exist a need for water subsidy in places where there has never been water subsidy before. It is only in places that have previously received water subsidy that now have a need for it, such as the arid regions of the midwest that are now in perpetual water shortage mode.

So the federal water subsidy is harmful. It alone creates the need for itself.

Why are any other subsidies different? If you decide to build your house a hundred miles from the nearest electricity, why do you expect anyone else to foot the bill to hook your dumb ass up to electricity? If you expect that, fuck you. People that expect that are fucking assholes that dont deserve any respect at all from anyone, certainly not respect from the people that these assholes so selfishly and greedily expect should have to pay.

Photography on a cell phone does not equate to photography with a digital camera -- knowing what f-stop is, or shutter speed, or focal length, or a LOT of the other of the fine-grain minutiae

1) the technical aspects are not really photography - they are details of a tool. They are not composition nor lighting nor mood nor concept.

2) The iPhone with iOS8, and version of Android for a while I think let you control all of those aspects in advanced camera apps (well focal length you had to add adaptor lenses, but lots of people do use those).

Yep.

As an analogy I'd point to pedigree and breed in a dog show. Your FORMAL education also has a breed (your major/minor) and a pedigree (which schools you attended).

But when it comes to hiring, I'd be looking for the "big dogs". And while breed and pedigree can be a factor (Chihuahua compared to Sheep Dog) I won't exclude the mutts.

If you have the drive and dedication to complete a formal major in one field while spending your free time becoming competitive in a different field then you are someone I should be interviewing.

It's not that you cannot get a programming job with a Lit degree. It is that the other candidates will probably have more DEMONSTRATED skills in the programming field.

Show me that you CAN program (sufficient to the basic requirements of the project) AND that your Lit degree gives you a different perspective AND how you implement that perspective.
