Comment SCI-FI used to be inspiring (Score 1) 191

Used to. No more.

Sci-fi writers of yesteryears used to ask pertinent questions, something like - Can robot dreams?

Nowadays we have the so-called 'sci-fi-writer-wannabes' who produce crappy stories, crappy plots, crappy concepts, craps such as 'twenty-mile-high-buildings"

The current crop of sci-fi-writer-wannabes just ain't got the imagination to inspire

Let me Xerox off a few examples of when similar Noun/Verb phrases lost their trademark in the past

Before Xerox came out with the photocopy machine which uses plain-paper for duplicating purposes, were there any such machine on the market?

No?

Before Google was online, was there any online search engine?

Yes!

Yahoo, Astavista, ... amongst others

Coke gets to retain its trademark precisely because Coke wasn't the first mass-marketed bottled soft drink either

The one big problem with Yahoo is it cluttered up its interface - even from the start we users already complained about their interface, but they just won't listen, and when Google came out with its back-to-basic minimalist interface users flocked to Google (including me) and since then the only time I go to yahoo is when I need to log on to my yahoomail account

Submission + - More than 75% of Mobile Apps will Fail Basic Security (wordpress.com)

Taco Cowboy writes: According to the Gartner 2014 Magic Quadrant for Application Security Testing Report "Through 2015, more than 75% of mobile applications will fail basic security tests"

Mobility is a critical tool for businesses. Don't let weak mobile apps allow a critical strike against your business

According to the Gartner report “Global-scale scandals around critical applications' breaches have highlighted the need for effective detection of exploitable application security vulnerabilities. Application security testing is the solution for Web, cloud and mobile applications.” The report also states that: “through 2015, more than 75% of mobile applications will fail basic security tests”

Ain't there enough stories of scams already? Why can't those people learn _anything_ from the mistakes of others?

Under the deal between Apple and the band where Bono is one of the members, U2 "gives away" the album on iTune and for that, Apple awards them with a cool Two Hundred Million United States Greenbacks

The guise of national security ...

If the "five eyes" limit their surveillance on the people of their respective five countries the 'national security" argument could still be applied

But what TFA is describing has gone way beyond their respective national border. Their aim is to extend their authoritarian control over THE ENTIRE WORLD and this is the one thing that the whole world must reject

Not since the dawn of time _any_ one entity has the control of the entire planet - As a comparison, even the largest empire ever was, the British Empire, in its peak, controlled less than 25% of the world

The worldwide hegemony must be defeated, dismantled and destroyed, or our future, the future of the Human Race, will forever be shrouded under a thick layer of very dark cloud

Medical Milestone: Scientists Reset Human Stem Cells 75

A reader sends news that researchers from the University of Cambridge have made a breakthrough in the production of human pluripotent stem cells. The goal when developing this kind of stem cell is to have them as early in the cell's lifecycle as possible, so that they're more like true embryonic stem cells and can fulfill whatever role is needed. But all of them made so far are advanced slightly down their developmental pathway. The new work, published in the journal Cell (abstract), has found a way to "reset" the cells by introducing two genes that induce a developmental "ground state."

theangloamerican writes: This was a government manipulating its citizens with tools straight out of the pages of the Third Reich. “If you are not for us, you are against us” pretty much closes down rational argument.

Now we find US intelligence officers were closed down like the rest of us as the US Government politicised intelligence. But perhaps equally alarming is that this politicisation of intelligence continues today in government under a completely different administration.

Early iPhone 6 Benchmark Results Show Only Modest Gains For A8 208

MojoKid writes: Historically speaking, we typically see impressive performance gains each time Apple releases a new custom processor for its mobile products. Certainly that was true of the A7 SoC, the world's first 64-bit smartphone processor. So, can we expect the same kind of performance bump from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both of which sport the new custom A8 SoC? Maybe not. The iPhone 6 recently surfaced in results for the Basemark X benchmark and armed with a dual-core 1.4GHz Cyclone CPU and A8 GPU, the iPhone 6 scored 21,204.26 and a earned a place at the top of the chart, though not by much. By comparison, the iPhone 5s scored 20,253.80 in the same benchmark. In other words, the iPhone 6 is currently less than 5 percent faster than the iPhone 5s, at least as far as the Basemark X benchmark is concerned.

California Declares Carpooling Via Ride-Share Services Illegal 288

An anonymous reader writes: Ride-share companies like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar got letters from the California Public Utilities Commission this week telling them that carpool features for their services are illegal. "Basically, the CPUC says that under California law it's illegal for these ride-sharing services to charge passengers an individual fare when carrying multiple people in one vehicle. If the companies would like to add a carpool feature, they first have to request an adjustment to their existing permits with the CPUC or petition the state legislature to modify the law. Uber, Lyft and Sidecar all unveiled carpool features last month. The three companies say the feature lets strangers in multiple locations, but heading the same direction, share rides and split fares — saving passengers up to 50 percent per ride." This news arrives just as Uber gave in to the demands of striking drivers who claim the company is undermining their ability to earn a livable wage.

Curiosity Rover Arrives At Long-Term Destination 33

When NASA's Curiosity rover landed on Mars, the mission team had a particular destination in mind: Mount Sharp. Just over two years and about nine kilometers of driving later, Curiosity has arrived at Mount Sharp. It will now begin its ascent of the mountain (PDF), first analyzing basal rocks with a "paintbrush" texture, then moving further to observe hematite-bearing rocks further up the slope. It will then proceed into an area laden with clay-bearing rocks, and finally to the upper reaches of the foothills, which contain rocks with magnesium sulfate in them. The team has selected routes and driving modes that they hope will slow the steadily accumulating damage to the rover's wheels.
