Submission + - Wii caught the xbox 360

LucidLion writes: As reported here and according to the vgchartz, in less than a year the Wii has overtaken the XBox 360 and has become the fasted selling console ever. From the article:

The news marks the first time that Nintendo has been the leader in both the home console and handheld markets since 1994 when the company's Super NES and Game Boy lines reigned supreme. Currently, the DS and Wii are the top two selling system's in the industry.
With the way it's selling, any drought in Wii games probably won't last long.

The Coming Uranium Crisis 485

tcd004 writes "MIT reports that the world is running out of fuel for our nuclear reactors due to production limitations and an aging infrastructure. Nuclear power has gained popularity as a carbon-free energy source in recent years, but Dr. Thomas Neff, a research affiliate at MIT's Center for International Studies, warned that fuel scarcity could drive up prices and kill the industry before it gets back on its feet. Passport has pulled together some interesting numbers: there are 440 reactors currently in operation and 82 new plants under construction. The demand for fuel has driven the price of uranium up more than 40% in the last few months — 900% over the last decade. You can follow the spot price for a pound of uranium. "

Submission + - Vista Sales Numbers Don't Add Up

Overly Critical Guy writes: Vista's sales numbers don't add up according to Joe Wilcox of Microsoft-Watch. Going through the numbers and citing NPD, Gartner, and IDC, Wilcox describes the difference between licenses sold to manufacturers and actual consumer purchases, noting that there haven't been 20 million PCs sold since Jan. 30, contrary to Microsoft's numbers. In fact, only 3 million PCs have been sold since the start of the year.

WeakGeek writes: Retail giant Best Buy said today it will acquire service provider Speakeasy, a competitive player in the data and voice arena, for $97 million. Submission + - Guild Wars 2 to feature persistent world

JamesO writes: "Development of Guild Wars 2 is underway and the game will be based on the same mechanics which made the Original Guild Wars so popular. However, the first full sequel will see the addition of a fully persistent world and yet the series will remain subscription free. The game is expected to go into beta sometime in the second half of 2008, so we're still some way off a release.

There's also further news today on the first true expansion for the Guild Wars franchise, Guild Wars Eye of the North. The expansion is due to hit retail in Q3 2007 and will require at least one of the previous Guild Wars campaigns (Prophesies, Factions or Nightfall) in order to play.

The expansion is set largely in the dungeons and caverns of the land of Tyria that players will have first explored in Guild Wars Prophesies. Eye of the North will feature 18 large, multi-level dungeons, 150 new skills across all ten professions, 10 new Heroes, 40 new armour sets, plus more items, weapons and titles.

The expansion will also feature a Hall of Monuments where players' accomplishments are memorialised and will eventually be inherited by Guild Wars 2 characters.

Submission + - Burnout in IT: what do you do to prevent it?

Wizfinger writes: I've been a computer enthusiast since 1982 and working in IT as a systems developer for about 10 years now. Long hours and nightly sessions with pizzaboxes and Jolt are no stranger to me. But about a year ago, disaster struck. I burned out psychologically. Aches and muscular stress in my neck and head rendered me useless in front of a terminal, and I could no longer think logically, concentrate or indeed do any programming. Crying and screaming became my new daily activity. I'm 35 and I've been a useless wreck for about a year now. So I ask Slashdot: what do you do to prevent any of this and what can I do do get back behind that terminal?

Submission + - Looking at a Career Change to IT/CS etc.

rengav writes: "With all the recent talk of a new "boom" in computer related industries, it got me to thinking about getting into the industry.

I'm unhappy with my current career path so I'm looking at changing careers and IT/CS/et al is one on the table. I already have a B.A. (Chemistry) and an M.S. (Geosciences), so I don't need to get another degree, or do I?

Should I go back and get a Bachelor's in a computer related field? Should I go directly to the Master's? Can I get away with a "certificate", such as those offered through university extension programs?

What area within the computer industry should I target? Programming? Database management? Webservers? UNIX? Windows? Something else I'm not aware of?

More importantly, which areas should I stay away from and why?"

Submission + - Vista Consumer Release Confirmed at January 30

MattPat writes: "Various news sources are reporting that Microsoft has announced that Windows Vista will be available for consumer purchase on January 30, 2007. This confirms predictions earlier this year that popped up when Amazon accidentally let the release date slip on their pre-order page. Vista will begin shipping to PC manufacturers before the end of this year, but for consumers, that Vista Christmas gift idea just isn't going to work out."

Submission + - Apple upgrades MacBook to Core 2 Duo

UnknowingFool writes: "Apple has upgraded their MacBooks to Core 2 Duo. This comes after the company recently upgraded their high end MacBook Pros to the Core 2 Duo. For the base model MacBook, the price stays the same and the difference is only is the processor. The largest price difference is in the next model. I priced a MacBook with similiar features last month and it cost $150 more. That's without the processor upgrade."

Submission + - India Facing Severe IT Worker Shortage

Vicissidude writes: Software industry body Nasscom has warned that India faces a shortfall of half a million skilled workers by 2010. Nasscom President Kiran Karnik told a conference in the city of Hyderabad that the IT industry in India needed 350,000 engineers per annum, but no more than 150,000 of the most highly-skilled engineers were available each year. This was creating severe shortages of talent, Mr Karnik said. There was a huge number of graduates and engineers, but people with the technical, communications, and team-working skills that were required were often lacking.
