Does Italian Demo Show Cold Fusion, or Snake Oil? 479

An anonymous reader writes "Today, Wired.co.uk is running a story, 'Cold fusion rears its head as "E-Cat" research promises to change the world.' It gives an overview of the technology that claims to fuse hydrogen and nickel into copper, with no radioactive by-products, to produce copious amounts of heat, inexpensively, with a 1 megawatt plant scheduled to come on line later this month. Apparently, Wired was not aware that today is a big test in Italy by scientists from around the world, who will be observing the technology in operation, including self-looped mode. A real-time update page has been set up at PESWiki, which has been a primary news provider of this technology since it was announced last January." Wired's article is remarkably optimistic. I'd love for this to be true, but many decades of scientific-looking free-energy machine scams make it hard to be other than cynical; the claim of a secret catalyst which "can be produced at low cost," controlled-access for outside observers, the lack of published science to explain the claimed effect, and skepticism even from the free-energy world — along with a raft of pro-E-Cat websites registered anonymously earlier this year — all make it sound like this follows the marketing style of previous "over unity" / perpetual motion machines. I invite Andrea Rossi to take part in a Slashdot interview, if he's willing to answer readers' questions about his claims.

Comment I love code reviews (Score 1) 495

Unfortunately, we stopped having them due to a reduced group size. Also, last time we had it, the arrogant snob being reviewed fought every single optimization suggestion from the team members and didn't put in any. Then-again, due to the eventual group size reduction, I eventually implemented all the optimizations and his code runs much better now!

Bill Clinton Suggests Internet Fact Agency 336

eldavojohn writes "Friday on CNBC, Bill Clinton gave an interview that is causing some unrest on popular news sites today. When asked if there is a role for government in terms of ensuring that the information out there is accurate, he replied, 'Well, I think it would be a legitimate thing to do. ... If the government were involved, I think you'd have to do two things ... I think number one, you'd have to be totally transparent about where the money came from. And number two, you would have to make it independent. ... let's say the US did it; it would have to be an independent federal agency that no president could countermand or anything else because people wouldn't think you were just censoring the news and giving a different falsehood out. That is, it would be like, I don't know, National Public Radio or BBC or something like that, except it would have to be really independent and they would not express opinions, and their mandate would be narrowly confined to identifying relevant factual errors. And also, they would also have to have citations so that they could be checked in case they made a mistake.' His statements have elicited responses ranging from a Ministry of Truth a la 1984 to discussion of genuine concern about internet rumors and falsehoods."

Submission + - JAI Image-IO Mem Leak fixed, but submit is missing (jpedal.org) 1

JoshDM writes: "The JPedal team over at IDRSolutions discovered a memory leak when processing JPEG2000 (J2K) images. Further research revealed it to be a problem with the J2K image reading class. They've resolved it and want to submit a patch to make it available, but apparently the Image-IO repository hosted on java-net isn't taking commits. They're hosting a repaired JAR on their own site while they wait to hear from anyone (read: Oracle) who can accept the patch."

Submission + - Japan: A 7.1-tremor has attacked. (bbc.co.uk)

applematt84 writes: From the story: A powerful earthquake has hit north-east Japan, exactly one month after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The 7.1-magnitude tremor triggered a brief tsunami warning, and forced workers to evacuate the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

MySpace Lays Off 47% of Employees 206

tgtanman writes "CNN reports that MySpace has announced that it has laid off 500 employees, 47% of its total staff. From the article: 'MySpace's management kept most of the site's developers but gutted nearly every other job role, according to a staffer who survived the cuts ... "Today's tough but necessary changes were taken in order to provide the company with a clear path for sustained growth and profitability," CEO Mike Jones said in a written statement. "These changes were purely driven by issues related to our legacy business, and in no way reflect the performance of the new product."'"

Comment BSG and LOST were both shows of FAITH (Score 1) 602

under the trappings of SCIENCE and science's attempts to understand faith.

At least, that's what they became after the writers for both series decided to head in those directions as both teams never had clear plans of what the show was going to tell the audience. And don't drag out that old "they knew what the final image of LOST was going to be" because even though they knew it would be SPOILERS Jack closing his eyes where he woke up in the pilot END SPOILERS. they had no idea how they were going to get there since the beginning, and that's a complete cop-out.

Caprica is also apparently a show of faith under the trappings of science, but much more overtly so, and as the OP writes, it is quite ponderous and I stopped watching it 2 episodes ago after it bored me to tears. Very likely the prequel concept was announced and then thrown to a bunch of writers without an actual plot and they had to scramble to write something that ended up being much too direction-less.

Are Games Getting Easier? 854

An anonymous reader writes "I can't help feeling that this generation of games for both consoles and PCs are getting increasingly dumbed down and easier to complete. There's no challenge in today's games, most of which can be completed on the day of purchase. Triple A titles such as Halo, Modern Warfare 2 are the worst of the lot. The whole reason for this article is Medal of Honor, this can be completed within hours of purchase. Where's the fun in that?"
