Journal Journal: Has everybody in my journal circle died? 1

Just finished my 30th high school reunion, and realized....I haven't seen anybody in the slashdot journals in like forever.

Now true, the advertising on this site (when viewed without adblock) has become horrible- with that quarter-of-your-screen banner advert at the top- but I used to use you guys for tech sounding boards.

I don't remember the last time I did that.

Journal Journal: /. de-hostnaming userscripts

I wrote some user scripts for /., you can find them (with some other people's) on GreasyFork. The scripts remove hostnames from Slashdot links, so you're not being bounced to multiple hostnames, and to send you straight to the domain if you do get sent to a hostname by mistake.

I got interested in actually doing this because I couldn't leave comments on *.slashdot.org a few days back, only on slashdot.org. But it's annoying all the time, IMO.

My scripts probably have no elegance whatsoever, but they work.

Last time I tried to post to my journal I got an error, so I'm trying again now.

Journal Journal: Snopes is no longer a website 14

FACT CHECK: Snopes is no longer a website (Tb). When you go there without javascript you don't see any images. When I activate all the reputable javascript sources, I still don't see all of the images. I am no longer going to cite Snopes for debunking as a result. Are there any good fact-checking websites, as opposed to Javascript SNAFUs?

Journal Journal: Anybody else using encrypted sticky notes in their old age 8

To remember passwords?

There is one on my laptop now, because I have to change my passwords every 90 days and that isn't enough time to build muscle memory for me anymore.

It says:
1. HR[q]
2. HRFC[q]
3. CR[q]

I want to put it out to the most brilliant people I know, thus my slashdot journal circle. Can any of you guess to at least the category what these encryptions refer to? Because if you can, then my sticky note encryption methodology which is a combination of acronyms, personal knowledge, and arrays is not secure.

Journal Journal: Transact SQL- inventing fake records efficiently 3

This is going to seem downright blasphemous to some data scientists, but it is what I'm being asked to do in support of a Power BI Report and some weird behavior on the part of the business.

Basically, I have a list of results from tests, and am being asked to invent a new category of results for estimated number of tests when the total number of tests is less than the recorded estimate.

I already have two recordsets- the list of real results, and the categorized list of the difference between Real and Estimate.

I'm sure I could, with a double while loop and a cursor, simply loop through the recordset and then run a while loop

But there has to be a way to do this with set operations.

Basically, what I need is something like:
Insert Into Results (Result, EndDate-1hour, category, subcategory) Select Result, Enddate-1hour, category, subcategory for records loop NumberofRecords=EstimateDelta

But even with 21 years of experience in SQL, I don't know quite how to do that.

Journal Journal: Suggestion for improvement to "Up Next" Youtube algorithm 4

Simple new rule:

IF Title ends in NUMBER, and Title ending in Number+1 exists, then Up Next should be Number+1.

On second thought, maybe they already do that, but RedGreenTV named all their episodes wrong for Binge Watching (I keep having to search for the next episode, and I'm only 1/6th of the way through the 300 episodes). As I was typing this, I noticed the current video I'm on is "The Red Green Show Ep 50 "Car Pool"". Knowing this show, that's probably the Handyman Corner- turning a K-Car into a hot tub.

Journal Journal: Been busy, when did userfriendly.org go offline? 4

There are webcomics that I read daily, and for years now I've had a set of tabs that open things like dilbert and sluggy freelance when my browser opens.

Sometime in the past week, while I was concentrating on my job, userfriendly.org seems to have gone offline.

Anybody know when or why?

Journal Journal: [Political]

What Trump needs to do to retain his voters, retain the House Republicans in November, and get Kim Jung Un to the negotiating table in one fell swoop:
1. Have the State Department transfer diplomatic funds to Department of Agriculture to buy up all produce unable to be sold due to tariff war with China.
2., Hire the best snack companies in America to process that produce into addictive and long shelf life snacks.
3. Ship Snacks to North Korea for free as a gesture of goodwill from the American People.
4. Include trade deals in the negotiations for more snacks.

America's snack food industry creates more diabetes and addiction than anything else in the world. Supposedly, free markets will keep peace and break communism. Let's addict the starving masses of North Korea with a flood of food into their market, then reap the benefits of more food in return for denuclearlization of the peninsula.

I really need to start reporting these people for calling my cell phone on the Federal Do Not Call List.

Why would I want to replace a 6.4% credit card with a 6.9% credit card?

Journal Journal: Lameness filter encountered, post aborted! 2

I don't know if Slashdot is malfunctioning, functioning poorly as designed, or whether I'm outright being censored. Since I don't know, I'll list that possibility last. I'm trying to leave a response to This comment by Bruce Perens. This is that response:

It's just not important that Caldera used the words once .

If this is not important, why are you engaging me?

It didn't have legs, when we started the Open Source campaign that very definitely had legs and still does today.

Open Source is a wave that you've ridden, not one which you've churned up with your splashing about. There are obvious benefits in the Open Source model to developers and even to corporate rightsholders.

There were undoubtably Gettysburgh Addresses before Lincoln too. Who remembers them?

The internet, just as it remembers that people were using "Open Source" before Christine's claim. Faintly, distantly, because archival was not a major concern at the time. Perhaps one day in our apparently inevitable future of surveillance societies, we will remember everything and we'll always be able to look up who did what and when.

This is very pedantic of you and ends up creating a social negative as I've explained. The audience thinks you're a troll - because you are being one.

The audience thinks I'm being a troll because it doesn't know what trolling is, and because some people have abused moderation by modding me as a troll. Trolling is saying things you may or may not even believe because you want to make people angry. My goal is not to make people angry, although it's okay if people become angry with what I say. My goal is to support the truth, in the form of facts. I and others have provided citations which support the view of events which I remember. I'm not alone, nor does the entire discussion hinge on a single press release, and your attempts to suggest otherwise seem disingenuous.

Rethink what you are spending time upon.

The truth? I've thought about it again and again, and I just can't comprehend any other explanation than those we've discussed upthread why you spend so much time supporting this nonsense. You say it's not important, then you spend a ton of time on it, then you criticize me for spending time on it. Why don't you make up your mind?

Journal Journal: The reason why Catholicism is rational

The Seven Deadly Sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth) are emotionally based where the Seven Holy Virtues (the four classical cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, temperance and courage (or fortitude) with the three theological virtues of faith, hope and charity) are all based in rational self discipline.

This is the ONLY religion on the planet that Spock the Vulcan would be happy with.
