Comment Engineering Lesson Stress vs Strain (Score 1) 421

I'd like to explain stress vs strain. Stress is related to force while strain is related to displacement. No matter what thin phone you are putting in your pocket the phone will conform to your body. Strength isn't the real issue. The issue is yield strain. This is how far you can bend something before it yields (permanently deforms). Aluminum while stronger (can take more force) than almost all plastics cannot bend as far without yielding. Aluminum yield strain will be around 0.4% while plastics like polycarbonate will be more like 2.6%. Effectively this means you can bend a piece of polycarbonate about 6.5 times as far as piece of aluminum before it permanently bends. Yes it will take quite a bit more force to permanently bend an aluminum phone than a plastic one but that force is small enough that it will not be the limit. The shape your body and pocket form is going to force the phone to that shape.

The truth is it's nice using large phones but it sucks carrying them. I actually still prefer the form factor of the 4S with the stainless edge and glass front and back. It has a nice weight to it so I know it's in my pocket plus it's so smooth it slides in and out of a pocket easy.

My thoughts exactly. They would like nothing more than to brainwash people that once they get old they are useless and resources shouldn't be spent on you. Better off for everyone if you just kill yourself, or at least don't get any medical care. Wait until your children start pressuring you into going quietly.

Comment Recording industry had brief monopoly. (Score 2) 358

Music has existed as a business since before history. It only became a huge industry when recording and cheap players became available to a mass market. We are now past this point. Previously recording music required huge amounts of capital in equipment and copying and distribution. But now copying and transmitting are essentially without cost and recording and editing equipment is on the same scale as the instruments. The huge music industry is dead. What will replace it is a return to the past. Paying for the experience of a live show.
Recordings will serve mearly as advertising.

It's nice when you have a natural monopoly buy enjoy it while it lasts.

There are pros and cons to living anywhere. Cities have great access to all sorts of good and services but can be expensive. Rural areas are much cheaper but have difficult access. Suburban areas are a compromise.

Why tax those that live in high cost cities to pay to provide services to rural areas. Isn't the cheap cost of living in a rural area a natural subside?

What does a Liberal Arts Degree mean these days? There used to be a traditional Liberal Arts education that included theology, grammar, reasoning, rhetoric, philosophy, arithmetic, logic, geometry, music, astronomy, etc. I could see how taking these as formal courses would help someones critical thinking. But how many people with LA degrees have mastered these?

Most of the things you complain about are due to regulations. An airline would be happy to sell you a ticket for cash. A bank would be happy to open a numbered account. As for rentals of course the owner wants to see evidence you are a trustworthy person.
