I answered 100-200 feet, but of course that is just an estimate. And it certainly doesn't include the many books that are packed away in boxes because of the lack of shelf space... Truthfully, if everything were to be unpacked (assuming I could afford to buy quality shelving for it all), it would probably exceed 500 feet.

Not really. gksudo asks you if you know what you are doing and are allowed it. If UAC sees three doubts, it asks three questions, because its primary task seems to be to distrust the machine's own programs. gksudo just knows it has asked you a second ago and assumes you still are the same user with the same skills and rights.

In other words: gksudo focusses on the user, UAC on the program actions

Search "pirate bay" on TPB with the "Other" box checkmarked, and you'll find some things.

What does Market Cap have to do with anything? Market cap is nothing more than the perceived value of the company by the public based on the value of its stock. Apple is on a hot streak right now. Also, those other companies are going to be Sony Ericcson, Motorola, HTC, Palm, Qualcomm, etc...

True, best comparator would be net revenue I think; Nokia makes a lot more than Apple. Honestly, neither company could buy the other (outside a heavily leveraged buyout).

Submission + - SPAM: Goodbye steering wheel, hello drive-by-joystick

alphadogg writes: Today it's the stuff of video games but Toyota is experimenting with joystick control for a new breed of compact cars and transporters. The world's biggest car maker built the technology into a couple of concept vehicles that were on display Wednesday at the Tokyo Motor Show. The FT-EV II, which got its world premiere at the event, is a compact electric vehicle designed for short trips. The car retains seats for four passengers despite being much more compact than most other cars and packs drive-by-wire technology so it can be controlled with a joystick. The car's steering, braking and acceleration can be controlled by hand so foot pedals aren't needed, freeing up space to provide more legroom for the driver.

Shakespeare was the conduit through which Marlowe published his works after he (Marlowe) had to "disappear" through a faked death. Marlowe was a wanted man because of his outspokenness and involvement in the plots and intrigues of the Elizabethan age. The facts about Shakespeare's life that can be determined with absolute certainty make it unlikely that he could be the writer of the great plays, sonnets, and poems that are ascribed to him.

Comment Re:Nvidia facing obsolescence (Score 1) 317

First of all, if Intel + AMD's integrated graphics on the CPU suck, then NVIDIA's niche will not be only high end, it will be mid range too. But AMD is definitely going to support its discrete business, its making them money, its a great product at the moment. Intel, well its safe to say all their products absolutely suck. But, Intel has massive "persuasion" when it comes to spending millions "convincing" companies to support Intel products.

Secondly, while integrating CPUs and GPUs will be possible, you will not get two high performance parts combined into one, ever. NVIDIA has a current answer to that, GPU in the chipset (the venerable ION/MCP7A chipset driving many Atom-based systems, and _every single shipping Apple machine_ (paired with dGPUs in higher end parts), and while in the future they will have issues on the Intel front with legal issues, they will definitely find ways around it (pushing Tegra probably).

Why is NVIDIA's outlook not too bright? In all honesty, how often does not having an open source driver impact your average Joe? Virtually never. How useful will an entirely open driver actually be for the majority of Linux users? Have you ever looked into a graphics driver? Think its easy to tweak and fix? Their driver support on Linux right now is pretty damn solid with their blob. In most cases, it just "works". And yes, there are cases where it does not, but you give me any piece of software for Linux, and I'll give you a case where it doesn't work. Opening the source will not magically solve this issue.

The real message to gather from TFA is all those wonderful references to the fact that WORKSTATION LINUX IMPLEMENTATIONS MAKE NVIDIA MONEY. Lots of money. A lot more money than your friend buying a 9400GT to throw in a *nix-based HTPC. They are going to go after that market, first and foremost. Guess what? It's working. The Quadro lines are the only viable workstation choice for Linux CAD/DCC, and CUDA on Linux is sweet too.

AMD/ATI tried to push this entire open source movement, but its really hurting them. If they put half of that effort to making their driver rock solid in linux as a BLOB, they could really push into the market with their amazing 5xxx line of cards.

Hand counting ballots is a just a bit harder if there are 10 times as many of them to count. (Yes, you would think this process would parallelize very well, and you could just throw 10 times as many counters at it.)

The guiding principle in ANY election is that there should ALWAYS be a paper audit trail, regardless of what technology is used to do the initial tally. The surest way to show that the SQL code is tampering with the election is to show a discrepancy between the computer generated results and the results of random hand counts.

Also, $250 isn't exactly a whole lot when you consider that a lot of people of limited means spend more money than that on luxuries. One of my co-workers at a previous job earned about $12/hr, and spent her money on a $600 purse. Me? I'll buy a $10 purse and put $590 of awesome electronic toys inside it.

Over the past year, I have seen 3 Kindles total on the DC Metro. However, I saw all three of those on the same metro ride home on the one day that I let the battery die, so I find it safe to assume that they've always been there, but I've been too busy reading my own Kindle to notice the other ones.
