There aren't that many "coldest on record" events happening.
Actually, there are: Google: "Coldest on record", first hit is "NOAA: Winter 2013-2014 Among Coldest on Record"

I believe that the US army corps of engineers accepts reality when designing levies and bridges to handle greater flood waters than what they have in the past. I did some searching but I couldn't find any definitive statement to that effect though.
That's actually not a bad idea!
Suppose you used 5 different password managers, and each one stored a password. Then, a password manager manager would glue the 5 passwords together to get the final password. Or maybe hash them to produce the final password. That way, when one password manager is cracked, it would not be enough to get your password.
Of course, then the password manager manager could be cracked. Hmm.... so you would need 5 password manager managers. Which would require a single password manager manager manager.
I started browsing it looking for anything juicy. The edits seem to be small, good quality, mostly political edits. They look like interns with an interest in politics, history, and dance movies. I'd love to have an app like this for my employer's corporate network, just to see what people here do (if anything).
Here are the changes I've seen thus far:
lawyer --> attorney
remove "cold war" from some 18th century guy
change someone from democrat to independent
however --> then
$ --> dollars
Jiang Jiemin --> Zhou Jiping
[[ --> ]]
Imagine a round that *avoids* a target. No more friendly fire!
Game retailers are going the way of record stores and video rental outlets.
Yeah, now if I want to listen or watch something that isn't 6 months old or less my options are either buy it if it is even available or not hear/see it. Boy did we show those dinosaurs, AmIRight?
but no lives depended on my 6502 code.
I am sure the guy(s) who came up with apple maps said the same thing. If I remember correctly they were *almost* wrong.
As far as amateurs, the barrier to entry for programming is far less than for working with electricity. Which requires more training - writing an Apple Store app, or safely changing out the breaker box in your basement?
Changing out your breaker box. Hands down. There is no arcana, English as a language, no IDE, no security, no graphics to work out, no logic. You almost can't buy the wrong materials, and if you actually ask the guy at the store you won't and after that it is pretty much tab A, slot B, kind of work. It is so easy that most munis don't require that a licensed electrician do the work. Oh, and for the small fee to the city you have to pay for the permit theey have a guy come out to inspect the work to make sure you didn't screw up.
I am a programmer and I have a vague idea where to start with making an app for iOS, but specifics? It would take me longer to dig them up than driving down to the local hardware store to buy a breaker box and some fuses. In short, you posted as if electrical work was "a vocation requiring rare talents, grueling training, and total dedication" while trying to down play programming. I agree that programming really isn't that hard, but there is a reason programmers get paid what they do.
Doesn't matter, fewer people suffering is still better than nothing. The fact you don't care about the actual number of people supposedly suffering speaks volumes about what you really care about - i.e. Hating Apple, not some guy in China just happy to have a good job.
If they were a privately held company and not incorporated, i would not have an issue with the ruling. If you are going to insulate yourself from the company, then your religious beliefs should not dictate what the company denies its employees.
but it's not easier to bring a tablet and a laptop than to just bring a laptop, right?
No, but it is easier to bring just a laptop than a tablet. Any USB source charges it. You can carry it more easily, and use it in more places.
since a laptop does everything a tablet does
Not actually true (touch interface far better for things like drawing) but let's pretend it is.
A laptop may be able to do everything a tablet does but if the tablet is far lighter and has better batter life guess which most people would rather have on a trip?
In a foreign country would you rather wander around looking for a WiFi cafe with a tablet tucked in your purse, or a backpack with a laptop?
This is exactly why tablets have done as well as they have, because they replace laptops for some scenarios where portability is more convenient.
i'm in BT range of my phone 99% of the day, and i think that's pretty typical.
And I'm in quick viewing range of my phone 99% of my day, which is also typical. They are the same thing...
You are joking, but if you really thought that was a problem then you would be cheering for the workers to be out of jobs you consider unhealthy for them.
So the fact you are not cheering, why is that again?
the tablet allows them to
Yes, because it's a lot easier to bring a tablet with you than a laptop. So you may well have a tablet around when there is no laptop to open.
The same is not true of any modern smart watch, which by design only really does much when a smart-phone is in your pocket.
Because you are used to the area, you do not think about driving as much near home - instead thinking about what you will do where you are going or when you get home, when you are close. It's easy to grow inattentive and miss a change that leads to an accident.
Picking someone up and dropping someone off has none of the risks of familiarity since each situation is different.
Waste not, get your budget cut next year.
