Comment Encrypt your telemetrics... (Score 1) 294

Oh, it's not BT's cost, not their problem. And if people crash on icy road because the info board displayed the last available measurement "Road:Dry" when it iced over, it's surely not the telcos that will go to prison.

You obviously aren't either. Thunderbolt's way overkill for bandwidth requirements, and most onboard sound systems in a typical desktop handle proper mixer outputs and inputs just fine, with pretty much professional noise floors. I get more noise from my guitar amp and distortion pedal than I get recording the line-in with nothing attached/everything turned off.

Pretty easy setup. Added bonus, you can't infect through a line-in signal that I'm aware of!

Is that what you want for your daughter? Sure as hell isn't what I want for mine.

I listen to the ones who are from someone I actually want to talk to, the rest of them I just delete. If I'm listening to them without the visual voicemail interface, I just hit 7 about 4 seconds into the voice mail, otherwise I look at the caller ID on the VVS and hit the delete button. My phone is not someone else's tool for forcing me to talk to them. I get 3-4 calls a day from very low quality technical recruiters. I get a call every couple of months from someone I might actually want to talk to.

The only people who call me at work are IT people in response to online tickets. Then I get an E-mail from the phone system that they called me and I have to look them up and send them an E-Mail politely reminding them that, as I explained in my ticket, IT doesn't seem to be capable of installing a phone at my desk and that they're better off emailing me. Not to mention the fact that all my voicemails go to a null number and the size of that mailbox will eventually crash the corporate phone system. I also sit in a location they are incapable of finding or accessing if they do actually find it. I mostly just submit tickets for the comedy value, once or twice a week. I'm over 40, so I suppose they were probably talking about me.

Upstream verification won't help. The client has to verify that the image it received is the same one the server verified, otherwise someone can hack a router to silently redirect the client to a malicious server and serve up whatever image they want alongside a copy of the signed manifest for the official image and you're fsckd. What they need is:

  1. The manifest has to be signed.
  2. The manifest has to contain a secure checksum (cryptographic hash) of the official image the server has.
  3. The client has to verify the signature of the manifest to confirm that the manifest hasn't been altered and comes from the official source.
  4. The client has to verify that the checksum of the image it received matches the checksum for the image in the manifest.
  5. Step 4 is apparently what's missing from the client.

Comment Apple used to have security for firmware updates (Score 2) 163

With older (PPC?) based Macs, to update the firmware you had to power off the machine, then turn it on by holding the power button until you got an extra beep or sound. This would physically un-write-protect the firmware EPROM so that it could be updated by open firmware.

In their quest to make everything as "user friendly" as possible, they took out this hardware security feature, allowing the update to just happen without any physical action.

Bad Apple, no donut.

In a nutshell, the reason the world has a fetish for the US dollar is that every time someone offers to sell energy for anything else, the US bomb the shit out of them.

You think we like accepting your funny money in exchange for real world goods, knowing that it will never be redeemed for real world good from the US, but will instead be passed around like a cheque that never gets cashed?

Meanwhile, these fees can be big problems for smaller budget conventions, such as fandom cons. The artist alley at half the furry cons I've been to have a policy keeping artists from plugging in their stuff to charge because the con gets dinged hundreds of dollars in penalties by the hotel.
