of biological systems to mutation more than anything else. Without mutation you will just see the permutations of the existing genome try to fill the ecological space with those best suited to particular niches taking up residence there. The lizards for example the best suited fro tree climbing/feeding take up residence in the trees and breed new generations with an ever more narrow slice of the original colonizers genome.

The beneficial mutations that introduce new genes are were you get changes and would seem to be nearly impossible to predict in detail. You could hypothesize that a bacterial would eventually mutate to utilize an available food source, if not in any great detail the exact method.

The rest just seems to be usual determinism. Does it really take that much to predict that if you breed horse in pens with 3 foot ceilings and keep them in them all the time, in a few generations you are going to get short horses ?

Hey Jimmy*, drag is proportional to the square of velocity *because* of air resistance. Thought you might like to know, but knowledge doesn't seem to be your happy place.

You don't know what you're talking about AC, so please shut the hell up and let the more knowledgeable adults talk, m'kay?

And before you start getting all snarky, I teach engineering, and I am quite capable of telling you that you don't know your ass from your elbow.

You don't know your ass from your elbow.

So shut up. Now.

*Jimmy is my favorite pet name for dumbshits that don't know basic physics but like to spout off like they do on Slashdot.

Not to beat a dead horse but drag is a force not a unit of power or energy and the amount of power needed to overcome drag is proportional to the cube of velocity not its square. While the force from drag is important in terms of the design of the train and the materials used in it's construction, it's the power requirement that is the determining factor for the engine spec.

Not at all depressed. If the EU wants to fund vanity projects good on them. Having the U.S. not build the SSC was a pretty joyous moment, If we could only get NASA to not build expensive rockets that are horribly uneconomical like the upcoming SLS, and maybe farm that out to private companies that would be even better.

It's very difficult to predict which areas of science are likely to produce valuable discoveries. However, due to the incredible success of science throughout the last century (at least) it's quite a safe bet to invest in science and technoloy.

Here's an interesting link about the economic effects of publicly funded science: http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/technology/report/2012/12/10/47481/the-high-return-on-investment-for-publicly-funded-research/

That's a wonderful report let me ask you did you see what was missing in it ?

Think about it, what is needed for that report to be valid in a discussion of using public funds for science ?

Did you get it ? Well if not you need to ask where are the baseline returns and just how much of those industrial returns have been recaptured. Just from your link we got "optical digital recording" I read that and see wow my tax dollars went to build china and japans DVD business. Look again at your same report, It's claiming "750 billion dollar return on the human genome project" that's flat out bullshit.

However, science can take a while to pay off, so at the moment, the LHC doesn't look good value, but who knows what we'll be up to in 50 years time?

Everytime the LHC makes the news ... I think congratulations to the EU and then I think about the Superconducting Super Collider being built in Texas which was cancelled in 1993. We should have had these breakthroughs come out 15 years ago. In the United States. Thanks Congress for slowing down the pace of physics. Much appreciated .. NOT.

ehhh ?

Given what has come out of the LHC it's been money well saved. I believe even with all the roadblocks and general BS that the government puts in the way of science and technology projects, the overall willingness to fund them and and total available funding is proportional to their return to society. Even in terms of employing physicists and maintaining our national capability to embark on cutting edge projects we would be far better off putting the money to next generation nuclear reactors/ alternative fuel reactors like Thorium.

The future has a bunch of scary possibilities.

At some point, someone's going to figure out that if they tape a gun to a quadcopter, it becomes a very effective way to kill people - especially if you can afford 50 of them and can do some basic automation (ie. float to these GPS coords, then shoot anything that moves). Defense against this kind of threat is problematic.

And yeah, a driverless car would be a good base to build some effective weapons on. You're going to get "drive here" for free. "Keep driving a bit, then blow up" is pretty easy to add on to that. And it requires very little personal commitment to be effective, assuming you're competent in dealing with the software.

The future is full of scary possibilities and it always has been. I am kind of curious about just what changed us from a people that welcomed them to a bunch of gutless wonders too scared to get out of bed.
